Christo Stoitschkow Stoitschkow ( Bulgarian Христо Стоичков Стоичков ; English transcription: Hristo Stoichkov ; born February 8, 1966 in Plovdiv ) is a former Bulgarian football player and coach . Since 2011 he has been Bulgaria's honorary consul in Barcelona . After criticizing the police violence of the Spanish government, his title was revoked in 2017.

Christo Stoitschkow played in Charmanli from 1982 to 1984 . He began his professional career in 1984 at the age of 18 with CSKA Sofia in the 1st Bulgarian league. The left-winger, who was strong at dribbling and quick to start, moved to FC Barcelona in the Primera División in 1990 after three championships and five cup titles .
In five years with the Catalans, Stoitschkow was four times in a row Spanish champions. 1994 was his most successful year. In addition to winning the Spanish championship title, he took fourth place with Bulgaria at the World Cup in the USA and, together with Oleg Salenko, was the top scorer in the World Cup with six goals. In the quarterfinals, Bulgaria won against the German national team in New York (2-1); Stoitschkow scored the 1-1 equalizer with a free kick. Among other things, he was voted Europe's Footballer of the Year for this.
But after this outstanding season it seemed as if Stoitschkow had lost motivation. After poor performance at Barcelona, he was deported to AC Parma in 1995 . But only a year later he moved back to Barça ; however, he was unable to match his top performances of the past few days. Nevertheless, El Pistolero , as he is reverently referred to by his Spanish admirers, enjoys an exceptional reputation in Barcelona that goes far beyond ordinary sympathy. He is now considered a kind of cult figure that every child at FC Barcelona knows and admires.
After Bulgaria's poor performance at the 1998 World Cup, Stoitschkow strolled through various countries. He also had guest appearances in Saudi Arabia , Japan and the USA.
In July 2004, Stoitschkow succeeded Plamen Markow, who resigned after the European Football Championship in 2004 , as coach of the Bulgarian national team , which he supervised until 2007. In April 2007 Stoitschkow resigned as coach of the Bulgarian national team; Instead, he took over the coaching position at the relegation-threatened Spanish first division club Celta Vigo , who dismissed him in October 2007. On May 14, 2009, the Iranian club Abu Moslem announced that he had signed a contract with Stoitschkow as head coach. However, he changed his mind due to the political situation in Iran and switched to Mamelodi Sundowns , where he replaced the previous trainer Henri Michel on June 29, 2009 . He was released on March 17, 2010. In 2013, Stoitschkow was the head coach of the heavily indebted 31-time Bulgarian record champions CSKA Sofia for a month . As a reason for his quick resignation, he stated that the club's management had transferred their 6.5 million shares to him, so that he had to fear that he would have to answer for the deficit of the club.
Stoitschkow was five times player of the year in Bulgaria , came in the national team on 83 appearances and scored 37 goals. In March 2004 Stoitschkow was included in the FIFA 100 , the list compiled by Pelé of the best 125 living footballers. In November 2011, the Paisii Chilendarski University in Plovdiv Stoitschkow awarded the honorary doctorate despite massive protests from individual professors.
In October 2006, Stoitschkow, who was already known as self-centered during his playing days, founded a football club in Spain named after himself, which was to compete in one of the lower Spanish leagues.
