John Bullock Clark

John Bullock Clark, Jr. (* 14. January 1831 in Fayette , Howard County , Missouri ; † 7. September 1903 in Washington, DC ) was an American politician and Brigadier General of Confederate in the Civil War .

Life

Clark was born in 1831 to John Bullock Clark , a three-time member of the US House of Representatives . He received his education from Fayette Academy and the University of Missouri before spending two years in California . He then moved to the east coast and studied in Cambridge , Massachusetts , at Harvard University , where he graduated in law in 1854. He was admitted to the bar and practiced as a lawyer in his hometown of Fayette from 1855 until the outbreak of the Civil War.

At the start of the war, he joined the Confederate Army as a lieutenant and was quickly promoted to captain and major of the 6th Missouri Infantry . Promoted to Colonel , he was given command of a brigade with which he took part in the Battle of Pea Ridge on March 7, 1862 . In the following years he served mainly in Missouri and Arkansas under the command of Major General Hindman .

On March 6, 1864, Clark was promoted to brigadier general, then took part in the Mississippi campaign under Maj. General Marmaduke and Brigadier General Shelby .

politics

After the war he continued his practice in Fayette and was elected as a member of the Democrats in the 43rd and 44th US Congresses (1873-1883). He lost the candidacy for the 45th US Congress, but stayed in Washington as the clerk of the US House of Representatives from 1883 to 1889 when he retired from politics. He then worked again as a lawyer in Washington until his death on September 7, 1903.
