About this picture
Reil, seen from the south

Reil is a municipality in the district of Bernkastel-Wittlich in Rhineland-Palatinate . It belongs to the Traben-Trarbach community .

Reil was the second capital of the Kröver Empire , a Carolingian crown estate that existed until the French Revolution .

geography

Reil lies on the Moselle and is heavily influenced by viticulture and tourism. Reil also includes the hot stone district and the Forsthaus Reiler Hals, Hammermühle and Margaretenhof residential areas .

history

Reil was mentioned in writing for the first time in a document from King Henry II from 1008. The document is dated May 18, 1008. It documents an exchange contract with which Archbishop Willigis of Mainz hands over a farm in Reil (then Rigula) to the Church of Saint Stephen in Mainz in exchange for another farm in Büchenbach (then Buochinbah). During the Middle Ages there was an important pilgrimage site on the opposite side of the Moselle, called Reilkirch, whose Romanesque tower and early Gothic nave were completely demolished in the 19th century.

Since Reil was also called Rile or Ryle in the Middle Ages, it is often claimed that the first master builder of Cologne Cathedral , Gerhard von Rile , came from the town. A noble family, from which Master Gerhard could have come, is mentioned in documents for the first time in 1285. Its last representative, David von Reil, died impoverished in 1610.

From 1794 Reil was under French rule , in 1815 the place was assigned to the Kingdom of Prussia at the Congress of Vienna . Since 1946 the place has been part of the then newly formed state of Rhineland-Palatinate.

Economy and Infrastructure

In the 19th and 20th centuries, Reil was one of the largest wine-growing communities on the Moselle with more than 200 hectares of vineyards. The individual layers Goldlay, Falklay, Mullay-Hofberg and Sorentberg belong to the Vom Heiß Stein area and the Bernkastel area of the Moselle cultivation area . In the past few years the area under vines has decreased by around half to 120 hectares. Tourism, especially enotourism (grape harvest holidays), is therefore playing an increasingly important role. The place is the stage destination of the Moselsteig . There is a kindergarten and a primary school in Reil.

The federal highway 53 runs on the other side of the Moselle . Reil is located on the Moselweinbahn railway line , which went into operation in 1883 , on which the Rhenus Veniro RB 85 trains (Bullay - Reil - Kövenig - Traben-Trarbach) run every hour every hour according to the Rhineland-Palatinate cycle .
