The Scottish Football League Premier Division was played for the 14th time in 1988/89 . It was also the 92nd edition of a top soccer division within the Scottish Football League in which the Scottish champions were determined. In the 1988/89 season 10 clubs competed against each other in a total of 36 game days. Each team played twice at home and twice against every other team. The 2-point rule applied . In the event of a tie, the goal difference counted .
The Glasgow Rangers won the Scottish Championship for the 39th time in the club's history. The Gers qualified as champions for the following European Cup of the 1989/90 season . As a cup winner , Celtic Glasgow qualified for the European Cup Winners' Cup . Second, fourth and fifth-placed Aberdeen FC , Dundee United and Hibernian Edinburgh qualified for the UEFA Cup .
Hamilton Academical rose at the end of the season in the First Division . With 16 goals, Mark McGhee of Celtic Glasgow and Charlie Nicholas of Aberdeen FC were top scorers.
