The 2009 World Snooker Championship took place from April 18 to May 4, 2009 at the Crucible Theater in Sheffield and marked the end of the 2008/09 snooker season . The Scottish John Higgins became world champion for the third time in his career after beating Shaun Murphy 18: 9 in the final .

Round 2-5
Four players ( Rory McLeod , Martin Gould , Andrew Higginson and Ricky Walden ) qualified for the first time for a World Championship finals. McLeod was also the first black player to qualify for the finals.

Stephen Hendry received £ 147,000 for his maximum break in frame 7 of the quarterfinals . He also received the £ 10,000 award for the highest break. With 83 Century Breaks during this World Championship, the record from 2002 and 2007 of 68 Centuries was significantly improved. John Higgins achieved the highest number with 11 Century Breaks.
