Bergkamen is a middle district town in the Ruhr area , North Rhine-Westphalia , Germany . Administratively part of the town to the district of Unna in Arnsberg and the Regional Association of Westphalia-Lippe and the Ruhr Regional Association . history

Prehistory and early history

The history of the area around the city of Bergkamen goes back to the Romans . In the late summer of 11 BC Chr. With effect from January 1, 1966, the municipalities of Bergkamen, Rünthe, Weddinghofen, Oberaden and Heil merged to form the large municipality of Bergkamen, which was granted city rights on June 14, 1966 by the North Rhine-Westphalian state government . According to the 2011 census , 19,928 (40.7%) of Bergkamen were Protestant, 13,078 (26.7%) were Roman Catholic and 16,005 (32.7%) were non-denominational or members of other religious communities. In addition, church services are offered in the individual retirement homes in Bergkamen. The Catholic parish of the Holy Spirit is currently occupied by three priests, a parish clerk and two deacons. On the YouTube platform, the Heilig Geist congregation broadcasts services for the congregation members and also announces important information there that is of importance for the congregation members.

  • Roman camp Oberaden
    The Oberaden Roman camp in the Oberaden district is a two-legion camp with an area of ​​54 hectares, the largest Roman military camp north of the Alps and at the same time the oldest legion camp in Westphalia. On April 30, 2006, the Archaeological Educational Trail Roman Camp Oberaden of the Association of Friends and Supporters of the Bergkamen City Museum was presented to the interested public.
  • Bumannsburg ground monument
    The Bumannsburg is located in a forest near the A1 motorway in the Rünthe district. Despite the heavy tree growth, the walls of the Saxon-Franconian double wall ring are still clearly visible.   • Nazi collective camp memorial in the Mitte district
    From April 1933 to October 1933, the social building of the “Kolonie Schönhausen” miners' settlement, which was built in the 1920s, was used as a collection camp for opponents of the regime. In a large-scale raid on April 12, 1933, 489 KPD functionaries or people close to the party were arrested and housed in the welfare building. A total of around 900 to 1,000 people were transferred from here to larger camps (e.g. Brauweiler ) or extermination camps .
  • “Schacht 3” cultural center in the Rünthe district
    Coal production began in shaft 3 of the Werne colliery in Rünthe in the winter of 1915. Due to the slack sales caused by the global economic crisis, shaft 3, like many other shafts, was shut down in 1930. Since the traffic routes were badly damaged after the end of the war , the shaft was used from 1946 to quickly bring the Rünther miners to the site. It was not until 1960 that the shaft was finally shut down. The former laundromat of the colliery is used as a cultural center and is a listed building .

  • "Beversee" nature reserve
    The Beversee was formed by the subsidence of the terrain caused by mining. With a total area of ​​around 100 hectares, the area is one of the largest nature reserves in North Rhine-Westphalia and also offers a home to plants and animals that have become rare. The diverse bird life can be observed from a viewing platform on the lakeshore. There are many places where aircraft bombs fell from WWII in the area.     In July 2005, the Cologne action artist HA Schult began to design the dreary facade of the unused “City Tower” with colorful garden sheds painted on wooden panels. The plan was to increase the ten objects attached to the east side to 70 houses on the entire facade. In March 2011, the wooden panels had to be removed again due to weather-related wear. Most of the residential tower above the city complex was demolished in 2014.
