Transformers 3 (German subtitles : The dark side of the moon ; Original title: Transformers: Dark of the Moon ) is an American action and science fiction film from 2011, which is the sequel to the films Transformers (2007) and Transformers - Revenge (2009) and exactly like this based on the toy series of the same name by the manufacturer Hasbro . Michael Bay was once again directed , the male lead is embodied by Shia LaBeouf , as in the two previous parts , with Rosie Huntington-Whiteley as a new female lead. The film opened in Germany and the United States on June 29, 2011 with distribution from Paramount Pictures and DreamWorks SKG .

The production was supported by the toy manufacturer Hasbro, the armed forces of the United States and NASA as well as numerous companies, which in return were able to place their products in the film by means of product placement , including the vehicle manufacturers General Motors , Ferrari , Daimler AG and Rosenbauer International AG .

The release of the film was again accompanied by a marketing campaign which, in addition to the Hasbro toy figures, also included comics, books and video games.

The sequel Transformers: Age of Extinction opened in theaters in July 2014.

action

There is a war on Cybertron. The Autobot Sentinel Prime tries to escape from the planet in a spaceship, the Ark , and has teleportation technology on board that could have decided the war in favor of the Autobots. However, he is shot down by the Decepticons and stumbles through space without propulsion. In 1961, the spaceship hits the "dark side" of the moon . The impact is noticed by the people and the space race under US President John F. Kennedy begins. After landing in 1969, as part of the Apollo 11 mission, astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin break into the spaceship in a moment of radio silence and discover that humanity is not alone.

In the present day the Autobots are still part of the secret alliance NEST and work with the armed forces of the United States . On a mission to the Chernobyl nuclear power plant , a NEST team, led by Lt. Col. Lennox and Optimus Prime, an unknown alien fuel cell that led to the Chernobyl nuclear disaster . While they are trying to secure the cell, the Decepticon Shockwave suddenly appears, who controls a giant worm-like robot, the Driller, but is ultimately forced to retreat by Optimus. After the fuel cell is secured, Optimus identifies it as part of the Ark . At first upset that humans have withheld important information from him, he finally reveals to his allies and Charlotte Mearing, director of the National Intelligence Service , that the spacecraft has an important technology for building a space bridge on board . The former leader of the Autobots, Sentinel Prime, who is the only one who has mastered the technology, is also in the spaceship. Immediately, Optimus and Ratchet go to the moon with the Xantium , the spaceship that brought the Autobot reinforcements to earth. There they recover four pillars of the bridge, the associated control pillar and Sentinel Prime itself and bring him to earth, where Optimus reactivates him with the help of the matrix of leadership.

Meanwhile, Sam Witwicky, the Autobots' human friend, struggles with everyday problems. Despite being awarded a medal by President Obama , Sam has a hard time finding a job. Together with his new girlfriend Carly, whom he met when he was honored at the White House , he also hosts the stranded Autobots Wheelie and Brains. After a long search, he gets a job at the telecommunications company Accuretta Systems, but learns there from his work colleague Jerry Wang about a conspiracy by people who work with the Decepticons. Before he can reveal more to Sam, Jerry is killed by Laserbeak, as are several other collaborators.

Sam turns to Seymour Simmons for help, and they discover that the Soviets were taking photos of Decepticons hauling hundreds of pillars out of the Ark before the Americans landed on the moon . Sam and Simmons conclude that the Decepticons deliberately left Sentinel behind, knowing that only he is able to activate the space bridge and only Optimus can revive him. Sam can warn the Autobots in time so they can protect Sentinel from an attack by the Decepticons and flee with him to NEST headquarters. Once there, however, Sentinel reveals that he made an agreement with Megatron a long time ago because, in his opinion, the Autobots could never win the war. Sentinel kills Ironhide and some NEST soldiers, then steals the five remaining pillars and escapes, causing the Autobots to pursue him to Washington, DC . Before Optimus can stop him, however, Sentinel activates a space bridge to the moon, through which more Decepticon troops that were hiding on the moon can reach Earth and force the Autobots to retreat.

Meanwhile, Sam is worried about Carly and is looking for her. He finds her at her employer Dylan Gould, who reveals to Sam that he not only got him his job, but is also a collaborator. His father had already made sure on behalf of the Decepticons that the United States did not undertake any further missions to the moon. Carly's attempt to escape with the car Dylan gave her fails because the car, which is actually the Decepticon Soundwave, refuses to drive. Through Carly, Dylan has leverage to get Sam to question Optimus Prime about the Autobots' strategy; if he refused, Dylan would kill Carly. To make sure Sam doesn't try to warn the Autobots, he attaches a Decepticon disguised as a wristwatch to his wrist, which connects to Sam's nervous system.

Meanwhile, Sentinel Prime has asked humanity to instruct the Autobots to leave Earth as he is only trying to save Cybertron. The United States government will immediately pass a law to this effect. Before the Autobots leave Earth, Sam asks Optimus about his plan. Optimus replies that there is no plan, that people are now on their own. The Autobots then leave Earth with the Xantium and the Space Shuttle Discovery attached to it . But shortly after take-off, Starscream, who was waiting in Earth orbit, wrecked the ship. Knowing the Autobots are dead, the Decepticons let Sam off.

With the Autobots now apparently out of the way, the Decepticons begin their project. They take Chicago , kill a large part of the population and erect the control pillar for the space bridge in the city. They distribute further pillars all over the world. Dylan reveals to Carly that the Decepticons do not intend to return to Cybertron, rather they want to bring Cybertron into earth orbit, since only six billion slaves and the necessary resources are available to rebuild Cybertron.

Sam decides to go to Chicago, where Dylan and Carly are now. The former NEST soldier Epps, who now works for NASA , accompanies him together with several other former NEST members. As soon as they arrive in Chicago, they are attacked by the Decepticons, but are saved by Optimus and the other Autobots. These never intended to leave Earth and actually were in a converted booster that was dropped before Starscream destroyed the Xantium .

The Autobots and the soldiers make their way to the skyscraper where Dylan is staying to destroy the control pillar of the space bridge. Another attack by the Decepticons led by Shockwave separates the team again. While the Autobots fight the Decepticons, Epps' team tries to destroy the control post from a high-rise building. However, you are surprised by Shockwave's "pet", the driller, who brings down the skyscraper. Optimus Prime comes to their aid and kills the driller.

Meanwhile, Lennox and the rest of NEST have used wingsuits to gain access to the city, and Sam, equipped with novel weapons (sticky bombs and metal climbing gloves) by Autobot inventor Que, kills the Decepticon Starscream with Lennox's help. Meanwhile, the Decepticons around Soundwave have captured several Autobots, but Dylan convinces them to kill them all. Barricade executes Que, and Soundwave sets out to kill Bumblebee next, but the Autobots Wheelie and Brains have managed to crash a Decepticons ship, distracting Soundwave so Bumblebee and the other Autobots can break free . While NEST and the Autobots fight the Decepticons and kill most of them, Optimus shoots the control post of the space bridge with the weapon of the dead Shockwave, deactivating it.

A fight ensues between Sentinel Prime and Optimus, in the course of which the latter loses an arm and Sentinel gains the upper hand. Meanwhile, Carly, who has been freed by Sam, finds Megatron, who is still suffering from the injuries that Optimus inflicted on him (at the end of Transformers: Revenge ), on the edge of the battlefield. Having previously witnessed an altercation between Sentinel Prime and Megatron, she appeals to his pride, and Megatron, realizing he will never rule Cybertron while Sentinel lives, steps in and saves Optimus. In the meantime, Dylan succeeds in reactivating the fallen pillar, but he is thrown against the pillar by Sam in a duel and dies. After that, Bumblebee destroys the pillar, which destroys the space bridge and also Cybertron. Megatron offers Optimus a truce, but he does not agree and splits Megatron's head with an ax. He then kills the weakened Sentinel, who is still trying to justify his actions, with Megatron's cannon.

With their homeland now finally destroyed, the surviving Autobots accept Earth as their new home. During the end credits, you can see Simmons kissing Mearing, who then arrests him.

main characters

People

The actress of the new female lead, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, at the premiere of Transformers 3 in June 2011, in the background the vehicle shape of the Autobot Leadfoot.

As in the previous two parts, the focus of the plot is Samuel James "Sam" Witwicky , a friend of the Autobots , who has meanwhile finished college and now lives in Washington, DC , where he is trying to gain a foothold in the world of work . This turns out to be surprisingly difficult at first, despite the fact that the President of the United States , Barack Obama , has bestowed him with a medal for having already saved the world twice. Sam rarely sees his Autobot friend Bumblebee because he often takes part in secret missions.

His former girlfriend Mikaela has left Sam, which is briefly mentioned several times, his new girlfriend is now Carly Spencer , who works as a secretary for a holding company called Hotchkiss Gould Investments. Carly is informed about the existence of the Transformers and is based on the character of the same name from the original Transformers cartoon series , who was Spike's girlfriend and later wife there and already served as a rough model for Mikaela.

Sam's parents, Ron Witwicky and Judy Witwicky , who also know about the Transformers, pay their son a visit in the third part as part of a tour of the United States.

Lt. Col. William Lennox is still in the service of the US Army and works as a high-ranking member of the secret alliance NEST (Nonbiological Extraterrestrial Species Team) on the side of the Autobots. His former NEST comrade Robert Epps has since retired from the US Air Force and now works for NASA , for which he oversees the Xantium spacecraft, with which the Autobot reinforcements came to Earth between the first and second films. However, after the Decepticons take Chicago, he rounds up some former NEST members to help free the city, including Hardcore Eddie (Lester Speight). Just like the human soldiers from previous films, Eddie is not based on any character from any of the previous Transformers series.

Charlotte Mearing is the director of the National Intelligence Service and is therefore authorized to give instructions to NEST. She is one of the few people who knows the real purpose of the Apollo 11 moon mission.

Seymour Simmons , former high-ranking agent of the defunct government agency Sector Seven, is now the author has become of Revelation books to riches. Due to his knowledge and contacts from his time as an agent, Sam once again asks him for help. As the film progresses, it emerges that he once had an affair with Charlotte Mearing and still has feelings for her. Simmons is assisted by his employee Dutch ( Alan Tudyk ), who is trained with weapons, but tends to overreact in stressful situations.

Dylan Gould is the managing director of the holding company Hotchkiss Gould Investments and therefore Carly's employer. In fact, however, Dylan is an opportunistic collaborator who works for the Decepticons. He himself justifies his actions by treating it like a normal business relationship with a "client" that he inherited from his late father. Dylan is remotely based on the character of Shawn Berger from the two-part "Megatron's Master Plan" (never shown on German television) from the second season of the original Transformers cartoon series, which is one of the primary templates for the film plot. Just like Dylan, Berger allied with the Decepticons.

The eccentric Bruce Brazos is the managing director of the telecommunications company Accuretta Systems and is Sam Witwicky's first employer. After the Decepticon Laserbeak vandalized his office, he provides Sam and Simmons with information about several Laserbeaks victims in exchange for the opportunity to meet an Autobot (Bumblebee).

Autobots

The vehicle shapes of the Autobots Bumblebee and Optimus Prime and other vehicles on the set in Chicago.

The leader of the Autobots is still Optimus Prime , who regards freedom as the right of all sentient beings. As in the two previous films, in part 3 it is transformed into a long-nosed tractor-trailer , a Peterbilt 379. His trailer is new, with an arsenal of weapons and flight equipment. The latter is based on the improvised flight equipment from Revenge , which consisted of parts of the Jetfire transformer. Since Vengeance , Optimus has also carried the Autobot matrix of leadership in his chest.

Bumblebee is still transformed into a current Chevrolet Camaro , with its vehicle shape being slightly revised compared to the previous film The Revenge . Since he frequently participates in secret NEST missions, he no longer spends as much time with his human friend Sam Witwicky as he did before. Just like in the two previous films, Bumblebee cannot speak in Part 3 either, but communicates via his car radio.

The Bumblebee Camaro from Transformers 3 at BotCon 2011.

Ironhide , Optimus Prime's weapons expert, is still transforming into a black GMC Topkick pickup. He is killed by Sentinel Prime when he reveals himself to be a traitor.

Ratchet , the chief doctor of the Autobots, still transforms into a modified Hummer H2 - Search-and-Rescue- ambulance, whereby its paintwork and lettering in vehicle mode have been changed from the two previous films.

Sideswipe , the soldier among the Autobots, is still being transformed into a Chevrolet Corvette Stingray Concept Design , in contrast to Die Rache, however, now into a convertible version.

A new addition is Dino , who transforms into a Ferrari 458 Italia and speaks with an Italian accent. In the adaptation of the novel , the accompanying comics from IDW Publishing and Hasbro's toy series, his name is Mirage . However, since Hasbro's main competitor Mattel has an exclusive license to Ferrari toys, Ferrari insisted that the robot not bear the name of a Hasbro toy in the film. Hasbro's only (non-transformable) toy car to date is a licensed Ferrari model. "Dino" is named after Alfredo Ferrari's nickname .

Also new is Que , an inventor who transforms into a Mercedes-Benz E500 (E550 in the United States). His name is a reference to the inventor Q from the James Bond films , while his head is modeled after Albert Einstein . He is executed while some of Soundwave's Autobots are captured. In the credits , Que is also called under the alternative name "Wheeljack". In the original Transformers series, this was the name of the chief engineer and inventor of the Autobots who turned into a Lancia Stratos HF Turbo racing car.

The Wreckers , made up of Roadbuster , Topspin and Leadfoot , are some of the most heavily armed Autobots. Due to their aggressive nature, however, they spend most of their time with their spaceship, the Xantium. All three are transformed into Chevrolet Impala - NASCAR racing cars, but in their vehicle forms they have all of the armament extended. The Wreckers team was originally invented for the Transformers comic series by Marvel UK . The names "Roadbuster", "Topspin" and "Leadfoot" were previously used by Hasbro for Transformers toy characters, with the original versions of Roadbuster and Topspin in the comics even being members of the original Wreckers, but none of the earlier characters bears any resemblance to the Robots from the movie. In the credits, Roadbuster and Leadfoot are also listed under the names of the main sponsors of their NASCAR vehicle forms, " Amp " and " Target ".

Wheelie appeared in Revenge and was originally a Decepticons scout who turns into a toy pickup truck , but changed sides as the film progressed. In Transformers 3 he lives with his friend Brains , who turns into a laptop , with Sam and Carly. "Brains" was invented for the film and is not based on any character from any of the earlier Transformers series. Towards the end of the film, the two crash a Decepticon ship. The film leaves the question of whether or not they survived the crash.

Originally, the "twins" Skids and Mudflap from Revenge in Transformers 3 should have appeared again. Although General Motors made two Chevrolet Sparks available for the film shoot, the two can no longer be seen in the finished film. In the novel and comic adaptations of the film, both based on an earlier script version, Skids and Mudflap still appear and, like Ironhide, are killed by Sentinel Prime.

traitor

Sentinel Prime was the leader of the Autobots before Optimus Prime and left Cybertron, the home planet of the Transformers, as the commander of a spaceship, the Ark . On board the ship was the experimental space bridge technology, which could have turned the war, but Sentinel Prime had secretly made a pact with Megatron, because in his opinion the Autobots had no chance of winning the war, and he did at least wanted to ensure the survival of his race. In the 1960s, the Ark crashed on Earth's moon and was discovered there by astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin as part of the Apollo 11 moon mission. In the present, pose Optimus Prime and Ratchet Sentinel Prime and bring him to Earth, where he is now in a Rosenbauer Panther 6 x 6 - large airport fire truck turns. As the film progresses, he turns out to be the real villain. "Sentinel Prime" was first introduced in the original Transformers comics by Marvel as Optimus Prime's predecessor, but the character of the same name from the series Transformers: Animated (2007-2009) achieved far greater fame . Like many of the movie Transformers, Sentinel Prime originally had a different name, in this case Ultra Magnus . The original character by that name was introduced in the 1986 cartoon Transformers - The Battle for Cybertron , with Sentinel Prime's behavior in Transformers 3 being modeled on the role of Ultra Magnus when he first appeared in the Dreamwave Productions comics. The appearance of Sentinel Prime's robot shape in the film is modeled on actor Sean Connery .

Decepticons

Megatron is still the leader of the Decepticons, but still weakened from the facial injuries that Optimus Prime inflicted on him in Revenge . In Transformers 3 it is now transformed into a modified, armored Mack M915 line haul military semitrailer truck including trailer. Although only working with him as a result of an alliance, Sentinel Prime is the driving force behind the Decepticons' plan in the film, while Megatron only takes on the role of vicarious agent for most of the time.

Starscream is Megatron's deputy as in the previous two parts and continues to transform into an F-22 Raptor . Since Revenge , it has been painted with alien symbols in its airplane shape.

Soundwave , the Decepticons communications expert, used a satellite in Earth orbit as a hiding place during Revenge . In Transformers 3 he is now transformed into a Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG . In this form, the collaborator Dylan Gould makes it available to his employee Carly as a car. Just like in Revenge , Soundwave has a lackey again in Transformers 3 . This time it's about Laserbeak , which in its robot form resembles a bird of prey and transforms itself into a flat screen , a photocopier and a pink, human-sized version of Bumblebee. In the latter guise, he wins the trust of a little girl to kill her father. In the original Transformers series, Soundwave was transformed into a cassette recorder and Laserbeak into a matching cassette . In contrast to the original Laserbeak, the film version can speak.

Shockwave is the executor of the Decepticons and always acts strictly according to the principle of logic. In Transformers 3 he has a kind of "pet", a giant worm-like robot called Driller . In the original Transformers series, Shockwave, who just like its movie counterpart only has one eye, turned into a flying space cannon. The "Driller" is remotely based on the character of the "Dwellers" (Eng. "Moloch") from an episode of the third season of the original Transformers cartoon series .

The dreads are the Decepticons' combat troops and consist, among other things, of Crankcase , Crowbar and Hatchet , three identical-looking Chevrolet Suburbans with individual robot shapes. The name "Crankcase" was previously used by Hasbro for Transformers toy figures.

Just like in Revenge , Transformers 3 also features numerous Decepticon troops not known by name, including some as "protoforms" without earthly camouflages, others as doppelgangers of dreads and even doubles of robots from The Revenge . Also Barricade , who before the final battle of Transformers vanished without a trace is to see again. "Igor", a disembodied head similar to that of the Constructicon Long Haul from Revenge , also has a small role , of which another doppelganger can also be seen in Transformers 3 .

background

Emergence

The shooting of Transformers 3 in Chicago in July 2010, in the foreground the Autobot-wrecker Topspin as a heavily armed Chevrolet Impala .

On May 30, 2007, a month before the premiere of Transformers , DreamWorks announced that it was planning two sequels to the film. In March 2009, over three months before the premiere of Transformers , Paramount announced the third installment for July 1, 2011. Director Michael Bay initially reacted cautiously to the announcement, as he had actually planned the completion of the third Transformers film for 2012. In October 2009, however, he finally changed his mind and agreed to the release date set by Paramount.

Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman , two of the scriptwriters of the two previous parts, announced in March 2009 that they would no longer be available for a third part. For this, Ehren Kruger , her co-author on Die Rache , was confirmed as author for the third part in September 2009. Kruger had impressed Michael Bay and Hasbro Managing Director Brian Goldner with his knowledge of the Transformers in the run-up to The Revenge . In fact, several key elements of the plot of Transformers 3 are based directly on episodes of the original Transformers cartoon series : In the three-part "The Ultimate Doom" (never aired in Germany) from the first season, the Decepticons bring the planet Cybertron into Earth orbit using the space bridge, and In the two-parter "Megatron's Master Plan" (also never broadcast on German television) from the second season, the Decepticons team up with a human and use a trick to force the remaining humans to force the Autobots to leave the earth, whereupon the Decepticons come along to begin conquering the planet. In addition, the scene in which Megatron destroys the Lincoln Memorial and instead of the statue of Abraham Lincoln sits on the armchair is based on an almost identical scene from the episode “Atlantis, Arise!” From the second season (German title “Die Unterwasserstadt “, Broadcast as part of the new edition Transformers: Generation 2 ).

After defending the previous film Transformers - Revenge, which was almost consistently panned by critics, for a long time, Michael Bay finally admitted weaknesses to the plot, but blamed the scriptwriters' strike in the run-up to the film for many problems. As a clear mistake, he recognized the "idiot humor" (in the original "dork comedy") and vowed improvement for Transformers 3 .

In an earlier version of the script, Megatron's truce offer to Optimus Prime ended up being honest, and Optimus lets him and the surviving Decepticons return to Cybertron so they can rebuild the planet. This ending formed the template for the novel and comic book adaptation of the film.

Filming of the duel between Sam Witwicky (Shia LaBeouf) and Dylan Gould (Patrick Dempsey) in Chicago.

After Megan Fox , who had played the leading female role in the two previous Transformers films, compared director Michael Bay to Adolf Hitler in an interview with Wonderland magazine because of her opinion on harsh working conditions , Bay initially downplayed the matter and explained it further a month later, he would be happy to work with Fox again in the third part despite her often strange comments. Although Fox was spotted on the set of Transformers 3 in May 2010 , Paramount announced just a few weeks later that she would no longer play in the third part after all. That same month, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley was confirmed as a replacement. In 2011, Michael Bay finally revealed in an interview with GQ magazine that it was Steven Spielberg , the executive producer of the Transformers films, who had urged him to fire Fox as a result of the Hitler settlement, but Bay claimed in one later interview that this statement was taken out of context.

The signing of Oscar winners John Malkovich and Frances McDormand for supporting roles was celebrated as a casting coup in March 2010.

Shooting began in May 2010, locations included Chicago , Moscow , the Kennedy Space Center in Florida , Milwaukee ( Wisconsin ), Detroit , Washington, DC and Angkor Wat in Cambodia .

Former astronaut Buzz Aldrin plays himself in a brief guest appearance.

In the flashback at the beginning of the film, the astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin are played by the actors Don Jeanes and Cory Tucker during the Apollo 11 moon landing. In the present story, Aldrin makes a brief appearance in which he plays himself.

For the scene in which Lennox and his soldiers in wingsuits jump out of a V-22 Osprey , Michael Bay hired real parachutists and thus dispensed with unnecessary computer effects. In fact, he wasn't even inspired to take part in the scene until he saw the parachutists in their wingsuits on TV and wrote the scene with the intention of using the parachutists in the film.

More than 500 cars were destroyed for the film, which were actually damaged objects by insurance companies that were already scheduled for scrapping.

Two accidents occurred during the shooting: While shooting in East Chicago ( Indiana ) in September 2010, an extra was seriously injured during a stunt scene and suffered permanent brain damage, permanent paralysis of the left half of her body and a sewn up eye. Paramount was then sued for damages by the victim's family. As a replacement for the footage from this shoot, Michael Bay took over two short sequences from one of his earlier films, The Island , for the chase on the highway , and only added a few new special effects. While shooting in Washington, DC in October 2010, one of the Bumblebee Camaros crashed into a police car, but this time no one was seriously injured.

Transformers 3 is the first part of the Transformers series, which was also released in 3D . Contrary to the producers' initial considerations of shooting the film in 2D and converting it afterwards, director Michael Bay ultimately shot 60% of the film with real 3D cameras, another 15% was completely digital, the rest was shot in 2D and later converted. Michael Bay was supported by James Cameron in implementing the 3D effects . The total budget for the film was $ 195 million, roughly the same as Revenge's budget , with the 3D effects alone estimated at about $ 30 million. During the last weekend of the post-production work, the entire render farm of Industrial Light & Magic only to Transformers 3 . As in the case of the previous films, ILM shared the work on the special effects with Digital Domain .

The original English title of Transformers 3 , Transformers: Dark of the Moon , became famous in October 2010 through the advance notice of several books based on the film.

In contrast to the previous film Die Rache , Michael Bay's efforts to disinformation were limited, but he claimed in the run-up to the film that the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG was expressly not the Decepticon Soundwave, but an ordinary car.

For the voice of the transformer Sentinel Prime, Leonard Nimoy was hired in the original English version , who had already spoken the character of Galvatron in the original version of the cartoon Transformers - The Battle for Cybertron from 1986 and is also married to Michael Bay's cousin Susan. For Transformers , Nimoy was originally intended to be the spokesperson for The Fallen, but Bay was reluctant, fearing that he would "offend" Nimoy by offering him a role that was low paid for him. Although Nimoy said he wasn't averse to an offer from Bay, it didn't work out in the end, and The Fallen was voiced by Tony Todd instead in the original version of Revenge . For Transformers 3 , Bay overcame his shyness and hired Nimoy, who accepted the offer. In return, screenwriter Ehren Kruger made several references to Nimoy's famous role as Mr. Spock from Star Trek .

Sponsors and partners in production

As in the case of the two previous films, the production of Transformers 3 was again supported by the armed forces of the United States , the toy manufacturer Hasbro and other companies, some of which had product placement included in the film .

General Motors again made several vehicles available. As in the case of Transformers - Revenge is it in Transformers 3 in the transformation of the most Autobots to models of the brand Chevrolet . The cooperation was once again a mutual relationship, with General Motors using the Autobot Bumblebee for commercials in the run-up to the film. According to Chevrolet, the Transformers films have a visible effect on car sales, with around ten percent of all Camaros sold in the previous year being yellow, twice as many as in the case of other models. In addition, several Decepticons, the "Dreads", can be seen as Chevrolet Suburbans this time.

New in Transformers 3 are a Ferrari 458 Italia and a Mercedes-Benz E 550 as Autobots and a Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG as Decepticon. The two Autobots have names in the film that are not borrowed from existing Transformers toy figures. In the case of the Ferrari, this is due to Hasbro's main competitor, Mattel , having an exclusive license for Ferrari toys. The Mercedes E 550 was specially tuned for the film. A Maybach 62S Landaulet can also be seen in the film, but not as a transformer, but only as an ordinary car with which Seymour Simmons and his assistant Dutch are on the road. Unlike Optimus Prime, whose vehicle shape is licensed in any of the three films that used for Sentinel Prime was Rosenbauer Panther 6 x 6 - large airport fire engine from the Rosenbauer International AG officially asked for the three available and specifically for that purpose for several thousand US -Dollars painted in significantly darker colors than would be permitted for an actually deployed fire engine according to the regulations of the US airport fire department.

The three heavily armed Chevrolet Impalas that serve as vehicle forms of the "Wreckers" are based directly on existing NASCAR racing cars. Accordingly, the vehicles were exhibited at the Daytona 500 in February 2011, four months before the film started .

As in the two previous films, Transformers 3 also used real soldiers as extras with the support of the United States Department of Defense . The shooting took place on the premises of the Hurlburt Field and Edwards Air Force Base , among others . In addition, Transformers 3 was also supported by NASA , and NASA staff can also be seen as extras in the film.

Hasbro, as the owner of the Transformers brand, was hoping that the third film would give the toy figures another boost in popularity after the sales figures had dropped in the previous year. For the second quarter of 2011, Hasbro reported a net profit increase of 23 percent to 908.5 million US dollars, which was primarily attributed to the Transformers and Beyblade brands .

Many other companies were able to place their brands effectively in the film, including Northrop Grumman , Cisco , Superfund and the two American news channels CNN and Fox News . The paper manufacturer Double A also cooperated with Paramount and even had Michael Bay shoot a commercial that uses scenes from Transformers 3 . In contrast to the previous films, Transformers 3 also features many Chinese brands, such as a type of milk from Yili , a T-shirt from Metersbonwe, computers from Lenovo and HDTV flat screens from TCL . Due to the long lead time in production, the film also shows a Nokia mobile phone that still uses the Symbian operating system, although Nokia was increasingly relinquishing Symbian in favor of Windows Phone 7 at the time the film was released due to a cooperation with Microsoft .

The German dubbing of the film was again done by Interopa Film GmbH from Berlin. This time the dialogue book was written by Marius Clarén , while Tobias Meister again directed the dialogue. All recurring roles are again spoken by the same voice actors as in the first two parts.

Promotion and other media

Like the previous films, Transformers 3 was advertised in a variety of ways:

Hasbro and the Japanese partner company Takara Tomy (Tomy outside of Japan) jointly developed and released the mandatory toy series from May 2011. Just like in the case of the toy series for the two previous films, the toy series for Transformers 3 also includes numerous characters in addition to the film robots that do not appear in the film. The toy figures are again partly completely newly developed figures, but partly also new editions or variants of figures for the first two parts. Just like in the case of the toy series for the previous films, Hasbro's product range extends from "classic" convertible figures to elaborately designed figures for older collectors to role play accessories and comparatively simply designed toys aimed at a younger target group. In some cases, the minimum age recommendation is just three years. The human action figures introduced for the first time with the series of toys for Die Rache were also continued; there are also new, mutable, mutually compatible playsets that were last introduced on a larger scale in the Transformers series around 20 years ago. Many of the toys are also available in Germany under the original title Transformers: Dark of the Moon .

In the run-up to the film, the American comic book publisher IDW Publishing published three comic mini-series with the titles Transformers: Sector 7 , Transformers: Rising Storm and Transformers: Foundation , all of which represent a history of the film plot. A four-part comic adaptation of Transformers 3 was also published by IDW. All mini-series are now also available in the form of edited volumes.

The novelization of the film plot, written by Peter David , was published in May 2011 at Del Rey Books, an imprint of about Random House belonging publisher Ballantine Books . Other books for younger readers, including Transformers: Dark of the Moon: The Junior Novel and Transformers: Dark of the Moon: The Lost Autobot , published by Little, Brown & Co. HarperCollins in turn published the book Transformers: Dark of the Moon: The Ultimate Guide .

The video game adaptation of the film is again from Activision and has been available for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 since June 2011 , a variant of it entitled Transformers 3 - Stealth Force Edition also for the Nintendo Wii and Nintendo 3DS . Other games also appeared for the Nintendo DS . In contrast to the comics and books, the games also appeared in Germany.

The soundtrack for the film, Transformers: Dark of the Moon: The Album , was released on June 17, 2011 and is again a sampler with pieces by bands such as Staind , Linkin Park , My Chemical Romance , the Goo Goo Dolls and Paramore . The movie's theme song is Iridescent by Linkin Park, which was also released as a single. The actual film music with the orchestral pieces composed by Steve Jablonsky was released in the United States on June 24, 2011, in Germany it was supposed to be released on July 15, 2011, but has been postponed indefinitely. Only one download of the album is currently possible.

Financial success

Transformers 3 celebrated its world premiere on June 23, 2011 in Moscow , Russia . The official film release in the United States was June 29, 2011 with nearly 10,000 copies in 4,011 cinemas nationwide. On its opening weekend, Transformers 3 grossed $ 23.1 million in IMAX theaters alone , 14 million of which in 146 theaters in the United States and the remaining 9.1 million in 105 theaters in the rest of the world as of the time of Publication represented a new IMAX record for the weekend of July 4th . In just nine days, Transformers 3 grossed over $ 500 million worldwide, breaking the records for Pirates of the Caribbean and Pirates of the Caribbean on On Stranger Tides , both of which made the same amount of money in ten days had, with Transformers 3 not even launched in China and Japan at the time .

In the People's Republic of China, Transformers 3 did not start until July 21, 2011, but set a new record for the most successful start of a US film within three days with over 40 million US dollars and exceeded the China start of Avatar - Departure to Pandora by 72 percent. With around 3.7 million US dollars in the first four days, the film also set a new IMAX record in China, surpassing Avatar .

In the United States, the film grossed over $ 352.390 million at a production cost of $ 195 million and over $ 1.123 billion worldwide. Therefore occupies Transformers 3 is currently ranked 27th (as of: August 8, 2020) the world's most successful films of all time .

Reviews

The reviews were again mostly negative, as in the case of the previous films. At Rotten Tomatoes , only 36% of the reviews were positive, based on 245 reviews. At Metacritic a Metascore of 42, based on 37 reviews, could be achieved.

In his criticism for Spiegel Online, David Kleingers primarily criticized the one-sided sympathy for a reactionary war policy of the United States, which he believed he recognized in the film plot: “The film never really gets going despite the pompous display values, instead it uses its schematic plot way too serious. In particular, the role of the Autobots has changed: the robots are no longer strange marvels, but part of the US military apparatus. In this function, they also dismantle a hostile nuclear facility in the Middle East while driving past - the absurd blockbuster version of ' Shock and Awe '. The Decepticons on the other hand [...] are the ultimate sleepers, each an undiscovered terrorist cell . And that's not all: Megatron, the red-eyed leader of these irregular combatants , has the look of a warlord in his desert hideout . Taliban or Transformer are basically the same thing in Michael Bay's oversized sandpit. In addition, a longing for military potency pervades the film, which celebrates the soldiery even more than its predecessors. ”Even Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, replacing Megan Fox, could not convince in his eyes: She had to“ for Pin, who remained completely in puberty -up fantasies of the film ", and" Your appearance has nothing to do with believable acting, insofar as the cast guarantees continuity. "Even the cast of character actors like John Turturro, Frances McDormand and John Malkovich feels that Kleingers is merely" ornamental Accessories ”and raises the question,“ What may have moved these actors to participate, apart from the fee ”.

For the Berlin newspaper Bays, Thomas Klein criticized “ape love for the US military and those armaments companies that provide the Pentagon with their tools and toys” and also believed he recognized sympathy for a reactionary US foreign policy: “A tattered US flag; an apparently worthless medal awarded by Obama and Optimus' phrases about the unreliability of allies make Bay's view of the world clear: Actually, the George W. Bush era lives on in 'Transformers 3' . ”He also stated:“ Director Michael Bay is not a subtle one Film artist. Beyond the really big noise, he only knows two staging techniques: acceleration through fast, confused cuts and slow motion, in which hero types go to work or return from battle in golden light. Nothing has changed in that regard with 'Transformers 3' in 3D. ”As a further point of criticism, he cites that the film is“ an unsightly sexism ”:“ Michael Bay illustrates reactionary boys' fantasies. ”Klein only praised the 3D effects: "When broken metal flies around (which happens very often) or soldiers slide like flying squirrels through the Chicago canyons, Bay's steel storm gains an aesthetic tickle." Nevertheless, the technical implementation of the film was not entirely successful: Unfortunately, these moments do not change anything with a booming soundtrack. "

Pressure Magazine was also critical of the plot of the film: “After a grandiose prelude to the battle on Cybertron, Transformers 3 also had almost an hour of inconsequential job-hunting blabla and a love story, which at most was the stunning curves of Rosie Huntington- Whiteley as Charly gives a little pep. ”And came to the conclusion:“ What remains when the bottom of the popcorn bucket is reached? Well - emptiness and somehow the feeling of not having seen an overly bombastic film, because the storyline and everything around it seem far too artificial and embarrassing outside of CGI robots. Michael Bay manages to conjure up an incredibly intense image of the Transformers on the screen, to stage gripping battles and to celebrate the destruction of cities with an intensity never imagined or seen - but none of this saves Transformers 3 from mediocrity. "

The lexicon of international films also gave a negative verdict: “In view of the galloping nonsense of the story and stupid dialogues, the appeal of 3D technology can only save the entertainment value of the film to a limited extent. Even the actors, some of whom are excellent, are not given any space within the orgy of destruction to give their characters contour. "

Christoph Petersen from Filmstarts.de was more positive and gave Transformers 3 three out of five stars. Nevertheless, he stated: "Michael Bay's monumental material battle remains a mere patchwork despite the grandiose moments and it is sometimes difficult to believe that some of the scenes should actually come from one and the same film." Characters like Simmons are presented "extremely awkward, although also like the moon conspiracy, they play practically no role in the actual plot. ”While John Malkovich gets off well with Petersen despite his small role, the supporting role of comedian Ken Jeong is described as“ completely unsuitable ”because the“ out of the ordinary anarchist Humor rather harmful ”for the film. The second half of the film with the fight in Chicago, on the other hand, is, in Petersen's eyes, “the clearly better part of the film.” In contrast to other critics, Petersen even believes that the “patriotism overkill typical of Michael Bay” gets “happily little space”. . The action scenes are “mostly breathtaking”, but Petersen criticized: “Unfortunately, far less care was taken with the transitions between the individual action sequences, which is why the overview of the connections in this tumult of the battle is quickly lost. That is at the expense of the tension and prevents you from being amazed at what is shown as well as the characters. "Compared to the previous films in the series, Transformers 3 is" again above the level of 'Transformers - Die Rache', enough but not the more coherent and emotionally gripping series prelude to 'Transformers'. ”His conclusion:“ But 'Transformers 3' is not a really good film, despite the consistently outstanding show values. ”

Kino.de judged even more positively: Bay delivers “exactly what the word 'Transformers' promises: A story that is limited to the rudimentary, dialogues that could come from a US Army commercial, characters that are silly about Cover everything from stupid to charming, and above all and first and foremost and again and again gigantic action sequences that almost take your breath away. "Rosie Huntington-Whiteley also finds it a little difficult [...] to fill the high heels of the dishonorable dismissed Megan Fox . ”Nevertheless, the conclusion is:“ 'Transformers 3' is a Bay film with no ifs or buts. And that is to be understood as a compliment. "

Awards

' Transformers 3 won a Scream Award in the “Best 3D Film” category. The film was also nominated in the “Best Science Fiction Film” category, but could not win it.
