Aigre is a French commune with 1,591 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Charente department in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region . It belongs to the Arrondissement Confolens and the canton of Charente-Nord .
It was created as the Commune nouvelle of the same name with effect from January 1, 2019 through the amalgamation of the previous municipalities of Aigre and Villejésus , which have the status of a Commune déléguée in the new municipality . The administrative headquarters are in Aigre.

location
The place Aigre lies on the river Aume at an altitude of about 65 m above sea level. d. M. and about 34 kilometers (driving distance) northwest of Angoulême in the old cultural landscape of the Angoumois , part of the Charente . It is about 90 kilometers to the northeast to Poitiers . The Couture river flows into the Aume near the hamlet of L'Ouche , which belongs to the municipality .
economy
In earlier centuries the inhabitants lived on the produce of their fields and gardens as self-sufficient ; cattle breeding was also carried out on a small scale. Viticulture has been promoted in the Charente since the end of the Middle Ages, but - despite the grapes in the local coat of arms - it never reached its previous level after the phylloxera crisis. Instead, people returned to agriculture and livestock. Agriculture, handicrafts and retail trade still play the largest role in the town's economic life. Some of the vacant houses are designated as holiday homes ( gîtes ).
