The film is the sequel to Man of Steel from 2013 and the second part from the DC Extended Universe . After numerous animated adaptations is Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice , the first live-action film , in which the two title characters of himself DC Comics , Superman and Batman meet. The world premiere was on March 19, 2016 in Mexico City .

Zack Snyder took over the direction again . The script was written by David S. Goyer and Chris Terrio , which was partly inspired by the graphic novel Batman - The Return of the Dark Knight . Henry Cavill can be seen again in the role of Superman's ; Ben Affleck slips into the role of Batman for the first time.

action

As a child, Bruce Wayne witnessed his parents being murdered. In a vision he falls into a cave and is carried out by bats . Years later, when Wayne has been fighting the crime in Gotham City as Batman for a long time , he witnesses in the neighboring city of Metropolis how the battle between the Cryptonians Superman and General Zod is badly damaged. One of his company's high-rise buildings collapsed and numerous people died. Wayne blames Superman for the catastrophe and fears that one day he will rebel against humanity. So he plans to stop him.

In Africa , Superman's friend, journalist Lois Lane, goes to a war camp to interview a warlord . During the interview, the mercenaries mutinate and kill the warlord's supporters. They burn the corpses and flee when Superman appears to save Lois. A false testimony led the public to believe that Superman killed the civilians. It comes at a Senate -Untersuchungsausschuss, led by Senator Finch June. However, Lois has taken one of the mercenaries' projectiles and begins to investigate.

Entrepreneur Lex Luthor , who sees Superman as a threat, tries to convince Senator Finch to import a piece of green kryptonite recovered from the Indian Ocean . He wants to develop a preventive weapon against Superman. After some deliberation, the senator harshly rejects this, as she is not convinced of the pure intentions of Luther. Luthor has the kryptonite imported secretly.

Superman, who now works as a reporter under his civilian disguise Clark Kent, assesses Batman's methods as immoral and calls on him to end vigilante justice in a confrontation. Senator Finch summons Superman to a hearing outside the Capitol to determine the appropriateness of his actions. At that hearing, Luthor initiated a bombing that kills many people, including Finch. The public debated whether Superman was also involved. Meanwhile, Luthor researches the body of Zod and the destroyed Kryptonian spaceship.

After the bomb attack, Batman steals the kryptonite from Luther's laboratory and constructs weapons against Superman himself. He steeled himself, developed a massively reinforced armor, as well as kryptonite gas cartridges and a spear with a point made of kryptonite.

Luthor takes Superman's foster mother Martha hostage, can they guard of his armed men, forcing them to kill Batman within an hour. Superman flies to Gotham City, where Batman is already waiting for him. At first, Superman just wants to ask for help, but Batman attacks and a duel ensues. With the help of the kryptonite, Batman wins. Before Batman strikes the final blow with the spear, Superman mentions his mother Martha. Since she has the same first name as Bruce's mother, a change of heart occurs with him.

Batman realizes that Luthor manipulated Superman and ultimately him too. At the same time, tremors from the Kryptonian spaceship occur. Batman takes down Luther's men in an uphill battle and frees Martha Kent from captivity while Superman poses in the spaceship Luthor. In the meantime, he had created the monster Doomsday from Zod's corpse . After being awakened, it attacks Superman and destroys everything around it. Batman lures the monster to Gotham City harbor, where the spear is still. There the Amazon Wonder Woman comes to their aid. While Wonder Woman banishes the monster with her lasso and Batman weakens it with kryptonite gas, Superman can impale him with the spear. Doomsday rams Superman a bone in the chest and both die.

Bruce and Diana mourn Clark’s grave with Superman's girlfriend Lois Lane and his foster mother. Bruce plans with other meta-beings (people with supernatural abilities) as Wonder Woman a team together. During a visit to Luthor in prison, the latter warned him of an impending greater danger. In the final scene Lois spreads earth over Superman's coffin, which at the end rises slightly.

production

Emergence

In June 2013, the same month that Man of Steel premiered, Warner Bros. announced its sequel for 2014. It was also announced that Zack Snyder would return as director and David S. Goyer as screenwriter. At the San Diego Comic Con , Snyder announced a few weeks later that the release date had been postponed to 2015 and that Batman would be a key character in the sequel to Man of Steel in addition to Superman . This makes Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice the first feature film in which Superman and Batman meet. Christopher Nolan , producer and screenwriter of the previous film as well as director, screenwriter and producer of the Batman films Batman Begins , The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises , only works as executive producer in the film .

Was inspired Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice particularly by Frank Miller's work Batman - The Return of the Dark Knight , such as is indicated by the Batsuit. However, according to Snyder , Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is not an adaptation of the material. The film The Dark Knight Rises , which appeared four years earlier, was also inspired by Miller's work. Wonder Woman, whose screen appearance was announced by Warner Bros. in 1996 , will also be shown for the first time in a real film . After Goyer finished the script, Chris Terrio was commissioned to write an improved version in late 2013, as Goyer was already working on other projects. While filming was in progress, Ben Affleck also edited various scenes in the script.

In May 2014, the official film title, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice , was announced. The film was previously released under the working title Man of Steel 2 and later Batman vs. Known as Superman . Snyder said that the "v" (English pronunciation: [ 'viː ]) in the title replaced the "Versus" and thus a simple film title could be avoided in an elegant way.

In addition to Hans Zimmer , who also created the music for the film in the previous film, Tom Holkenborg , also known as Junkie XL, took part in the composition. In September 2013 it was announced that Larry Fong , who had already worked with Snyder on the films 300 , Watchmen and Sucker Punch , replaced Amir Mokri as cameraman.

occupation

From the previous film, Henry Cavill as Superman , Amy Adams as Lois Lane , Diane Lane and Kevin Costner as Martha and Jonathan Kent and Laurence Fishburne as Perry White return in their roles. The newly cast actor Ben Affleck as Batman now acts as the second leading actor . He was already seen in the 2003 film Daredevil in the lead role of a comic hero, where he received mostly negative reviews for the role. Affleck then decided never to take on the leading role in such a film again, and later said, after he was offered the role of Batman, that he was too old for that role. However, Snyder was able to convince Affleck to play as Batman in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice , as he said that he was looking for an aged Batman and not one that Christian Bale embodied in Nolan's film trilogy. Numerous DC fans criticized the cast, saying that Affleck wasn't intimidating enough for the role.

The cast of Jesse Eisenberg as Superman's opponent Lex Luthor also came under criticism . Eisenberg, who was 30 at the time he was awarded the role, is far too young an actor for the role, according to critics. The cast of Gal Gadot as Amazon Wonder Woman also met with controversial discussions. Her character is said to be based on the New 52 , according to producer Charles Roven , in which she is a demigoddess as the daughter of Zeus . However, critics on social media say that her body is not like that of a warrior.

In Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice , Victor Stone aka Cyborg, played by Ray Fisher , and Arthur Curry aka Aquaman , played by Jason Momoa , appear for the first time in a real-life film . Also plays Jeremy Irons first time Alfred Pennyworth , the butler of billionaire Bruce Wayne, who is behind the mask of Batman, and Tao Okamoto Luthor's assistant Mercy Graves. Bruce Wayne's late parents Thomas and Martha Wayne are portrayed by Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Lauren Cohan . In August 2015 it was confirmed that Michael Shannon , who played the adversary General Zod in Man of Steel and was killed by Superman, will also play in the sequel. The appearance of Doomsday was confirmed by the publication of a trailer on December 2, 2015 .

Filming

On October 19, 2013, the filming of the film began. An American football game was recorded at East Los Angeles College , which is said to be a game between the University of Gotham City , the city where Batman is native, and Metropolis , the city where Superman lives. In November 2013, the film was also shot in Yorkville , Illinois . In Man of Steel, this area was the backdrop to the Kent farm where Superman grew up. On May 19, 2014, filming began with the main cast in Detroit , Michigan , where Gal Gadot, who plays Wonder Woman, was also spotted has been. In November 2014 the film was also shot in Chicago . A shoot originally planned in Morocco was relocated to New Mexico at short notice due to the Ebola fever epidemic . The film was also shot in Michigan Motion Picture Studios and in the South Pacific . Various scenes were shot with IMAX cameras, such as the murder of Bruce Wayne's parents. Filming ended in December 2014.

Comic and movie templates

The film plot follows on from what happened in the previous film Man of Steel . The plot takes elements from the comics Batman - The Return of the Dark Knight by Frank Miller , in which an aged, gloomy Batman fights a Superman who is the tool of a corrupt US government, as well as The Day Superman Died , in which Superman finds death against Doomsday. It was also noted that Jesse Eisenberg's version of Lex Luthor follows more of the existing interpretations of the Joker . The opening scene of Batman v Superman makes the parallels between the work and other films clear: The child Bruce Wayne walks past a cinema with his parents in which In the Signs of Zorro and Excalibur are shown.

marketing

During the filming, director Zack Snyder and Warner Bros. often published pictures of the filming of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, some on Twitter . Besides the main actors, Affleck as Batman, Cavill as Superman and Gadot as Wonder Woman, the Batmobile was often a main motif of the pictures.

At the San Diego Comic Con in July 2014, video material for the film was published for the first time with a teaser trailer. However, the short clip was only shown once by Warner Bros. and not published on the Internet. The first official trailer should be released on the day of the premiere of Mad Max: Fury Road . However, a filmed trailer with shaky images was leaked on the Internet in advance. After this could no longer be completely deleted from there, Snyder officially published the trailer on Twitter earlier than originally planned. The second trailer was unveiled at San Diego Comic Con 2015.

The third trailer was previewed on Fox TV on November 30, 2015 during a commercial break for the Gotham series when the episode Worse Than a Crime first aired . The full trailer itself was released on December 2, 2015 on Jimmy Kimmel Live! shown. It was confirmed that Doomsday will occur. During the half-time break of Super Bowl 50 , two commercials were shown in cooperation with Turkish Airlines , in which fictional flights to Gotham and Metropolis are offered. A few days later, on February 11, 2016, Warner Bros. released the final film trailer.

publication

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice was originally due to appear in 2014. One month after the release of the previous film, however, the date was moved to 2015. Warner Bros. planned to release the film on July 17th. However, the release date was later postponed to May 6, 2016 because the script was revised again. In August 2014, the start was again pushed forward by more than a month, to March 25, so that the film does not come into theaters in direct competition with the Marvel film The First Avenger: Civil War . In Germany, the film was released on March 24th. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice can also be seen in 3D .

An alternative version of the film, the Ultimate Edition , which is approximately 30 minutes longer, was released digitally on June 28, 2016.

reception

success

In the United States, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice grossed $ 27.7 million on the day of its premiere , more than doubling its success compared to its predecessor, Man of Steel ($ 12 million). Worldwide, the film grossed $ 424 million on the weekend of its premiere, of which $ 170.1 million was in the United States. After the second film weekend, total income was 680 million US dollars, which, despite a sharp drop in sales and moderate reviews, fueled hopes of breaking through the billion mark. In the last week of April, the film stood at $ 851 million. Despite significantly exceeding the film budget ($ 250 million), this was viewed as a disappointment, as Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice lagged behind the billion -dollar films of the rival Marvel Cinematic Universe and, due to moderate word of mouth, there was limited anticipation for the next films in the DC franchise ( Suicide Squad and Wonder Woman ) woke up.

In German cinemas, the film recorded over 1.5 million visitors, placing it in 18th place among the films launched in 2016 (as of August 13, 2017).

In the list of the world's most successful films of all time, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice currently ranks 71 (as of August 8, 2020).

criticism

During the shooting, set photos were criticized on the Internet. The Batmobile can be seen head-on in one picture, with strong firearms recognizable. Chris Plante wrote on the website The Verge, for example, that although the Batmobile is partially equipped with firearms in the comics, they are particularly large and striking in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice .

In the United States, the reviews were mixed. At Rotten Tomatoes , the film got an average rating of 28 percent. At Metacritic , the film scored an average of 44 out of 100 points. The lack of narrative flow was often criticized in US American reviews and Ben Affleck's performance as Batman was praised.

In Germany the mood was similarly mixed. Spiegel Online wrote that the film was "not a good film despite two supermen", criticized director Zack Snyder for "a string of pompous expositions [...] with superfluous dream sequences that make up the actually interesting personal drama [between Batman and Superman]" despite appealing acting performances by Affleck, Cavill and Gadot would never develop. The FAZ also praised the actors, criticized the “smoothly pathetic” production and ultimately saw “not a bad film”. Kino.de rated the flick as “average” and praised Ben Affleck's interpretation as Batman. The evening newspaper wrote that the film was in some places too "confused and lengthy"; she praised the "tough, aggressive and bitter" Batman portrayal and Jesse Eisenberg in his role as Lex Luthor. Moviejones.de rated the film 2.5 out of 5 and criticized it as “cold and soulless”. The epd Film defines the target audience: “If you have a thing for the slow-motion and destructive rage of Zack Snyder, you might be able to gain something from the film, especially since Wonder Woman is making her promising screen debut. But poorly motivated protagonists and an unsatisfactory story make the start of the DC Comics saga a tiring and annoying film ”.

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is the second in a series of films in a film universe of DC Comics plays and in 2013 with Man of Steel began. On August 4, 2016, the film Suicide Squad was released , in which the focus is particularly on Batman's antagonists, such as the Joker or Deadshot . On June 2, 2017, the first solo real-life film based on the character Wonder Woman was released in US cinemas under the same name . After this film, Wonder Woman appeared in the November 2017 film Justice League together with Batman and Superman as part of the Justice League superhero team . In April 2016 it was announced that Ben Affleck would direct a new Batman movie, but Affleck stepped down as a director in late January 2017.
