Courcelles-sur-Nied is a French commune with 1190 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Moselle department in the Grand Est region (until 2015 Lorraine ).
geography
The municipality of Courcelles is located at the westernmost point of the French Nied , just a few kilometers east of Metz .
history
The village was first mentioned in 1161 as Corilum and has belonged to France since 1552. Although it has always been on the French side of the historical Franco-German language border , it was annexed by the German Empire in the Peace of Frankfurt in 1871 and was called Courcelles an der Nied until 1915 . In 1915 the name was translated into German in Kurzel an der Nied . In 1919 the region (and with it the village) became French territory again through the Treaty of Versailles.
During the battle for Metz on November 18, 1944, US troops captured Courcelles-sur-Nied.
