The three- cushion World Cup 1994/7 was the 4th and last BWA World Cup tournament in the ninth year of the three-cushion World Cup. The BWA World Cup took place from December 7th to 11th, 1994 in this discipline of carom billiards in Ghent , Belgium . It was the ninth World Cup tournament in Belgium.
Due to the 50% higher points in the final tournament, the outcome of the overall World Cup had become a duel between the leading Dick Jaspers and Torbjörn Blomdahl . The better placed was the winner. Jaspers already had big problems with his compatriot Jan Arnouts on the first lap. After 0: 2 set deficit, he won the third set with 15:14 and finally won with 3: 2 sets. Then Jaspers played really big and only lost in the semifinals against the eventual winner Semih Saygıner . After two 3-0 wins, Blomdahl only had problems in the semifinals in his 3-2 win over Ludo Dielis after a 2-1 set deficit and was in the final. That was enough for his fourth overall World Cup victory. With his victory, Semih Saygıner ensured the greatest billiards success in his country. The round of 16 match between Marco Zanetti and Louis Havermans ended very unfortunate for the Italian. Weakened by the flu, he had to give up in the third sentence. It later found out that it was even pneumonia.
The exact price money could not be determined from the documents. However, as in all BWA World Cup tournaments, it was at least 100,000 DM.
The World Cup tournaments have always been played as an open tournament since 1994. From a pre-qualification with a maximum of 124 participants, 8 participants qualify for the 1/16 finals. The main tournament is played with 28 participants. The first four of the world rankings are set for the round of 16. In future, 20 participants are set. The seeded participants are recruited from the best 14 players in the world rankings (as of September 1st of the current year), the two best qualifiers of the Grand Prix and two national and international wild cards. The whole tournament, with the exception of the small final, is played in the knockout system with three sets of 15 points each. (Press release by BWA.Ghent, January 8, 1994.)
Final round
The tournament tree for the final round is listed below.
The three-cushion World Cup was organized by the founding association, the " Billiards Worldcup Association " (BWA) until 1998 . Disputes between the BWA and the world association Union Mondiale de Billard (UMB) led to parallel tournaments between 1994 and 1997. The UMB / BWA organized the tournament together until the beginning of 1999. Since the dissolution of the BWA in 1999, the UMB has been the sole organizer. From 1988-1991 the UMB did not host any world championships. During this time, the annual overall winner of the World Cup was crowned world champion.
