Saint-Fons is located on the outskirts of Lyon in the Métropole de Lyon in the region of Auvergne Rhône-Alpes . Administratively, the city belongs to the Arrondissement of Lyon .

history

Surname

The name of the city does not refer to a saint, but to the numerous wells that used to be found here . The area was called Cent-Fonts ( German : Hundert Brunnen). The name later changed to Saint-Fons . The inhabitants of the place are called Saint-Foniards .

Events

The city became an independent municipality in the 19th century when part of the territory of the neighboring city of Vénissieux was separated. The chemical industry located here played the most important role in the development of an independent city . So presented here Rhodia 1912 cellulose acetate flake ago, which were used in paints and coatings.

On July 27, 1945 near Saint-Fons met a passenger train and a freight train , the ammunition was loaded together. The following explosions not only destroyed numerous houses, but also the local gas works . About 150 people died in the accident .
