About this picture
Earth seen from the opposite bank of the Moselle.

Erden is a municipality in the district of Bernkastel-Wittlich in Rhineland-Palatinate . It belongs to the community of Bernkastel-Kues .

geography

location

Erden is to the right of the Moselle , surrounded by vineyards, in the large bend in the river between Bernkastel-Kues and Traben-Trarbach , where the valley widens to a very flat landscape bordering the Hunsrück. On the opposite side of the river, steep slopes rise to the Eifel .

Spatial planning

Neighboring towns are Lösnich and Zeltingen-Rachtig , opposite Ürzig . The closest medium-sized center is Bernkastel-Kues , around eight kilometers as the crow flies , and the district town of Wittlich around ten kilometers. Trier is about 38 kilometers away.

climate

Earth lies in the transition zone from the temperate maritime climate to the continental climate ; Compared to other regions in Germany, the climate is very mild and sunny - in Brauneberg, not far away, the record temperature of 41.2 ° C in the shade, the highest air temperature ever recorded in the Federal Republic , was found on August 11, 1998 .

The Eifel Barrier offers protection from rain-bringing westerly winds, which can also have a blow-dry effect. At the same time, air warming is favored due to the low level of air exchange with the surrounding area. Associated with this, due to the constant evaporation of the Moselle water, is a regularly high level of humidity , which, especially in summer, causes sometimes stressful, humid weather and numerous thunderstorms.

history

La Tène and Roman times

Already around 500 BC The Treveri , a Celtic-Germanic mixed people, settled in Western and Central Europe. Celtic graves testify to this. In Roman times, today's local community was probably in the territory of the provincial capital Trier; presumably it was integrated into the supply of the city as a state domain. Across from Erden, two ancient wine presses were found , one of which is the oldest Roman wine press house in Germany. A smoke chamber, a so-called fumarium, was added to this in the 4th century AD in order to use smoke to achieve faster maturation of the wine . This is proven by the latest excavations by the Rheinisches Landesmuseum in Trier.

middle Ages

In the Franconian Empire, Erden remained a royal property and belonged to the Kröv Treasury , which, after temporary administration by the Count Palatine near Rhine , was pledged by the King in the 13th century and passed into the hands of the Counts of Sponheim . Around 774/755 the name Erden appears for the first time in writing: in pago Muslense super fluvio Muselle in monte Ardinigo it says in a document of the Abbey of Echternach . Earth means high , steep .

The fragmentation of the Kröv Treasury found its counterpart in that of Erden, where the Bishop of Toul and his Abbey of St. Èvre acquired extensive property in the early Middle Ages . This probably came from the Pippinids , who were wealthy in the Moselle region, and was sold to the Bailiffs of Hunolstein in 1266 . In the Carolingian era, the royal monastery of Echternach appears to be concerned with goods in earth. The following are the high and late Middle Ages, the Cistercian abbey Himmerod and other convents and monasteries, including the monastery makers , Springiersbach , Oren, Abbey of St. Maximin , Abbey Ravengiersburg and more. Sponheim's share of the land in Erden was certainly the largest, but the counts gave parts of it as castle fiefs . Sponheim was also the feudal lord of the bailiffs of Hunolstein and maintained the sovereignty of the Kröver empire through the high courts until the end of the 18th century, even when the bailiffs of Hunolstein sold their goods to the Trier archbishopric. The barrel floor tariff in Erden, probably an old privilege of the tax authorities, which is attested late, and the ban on mills secured the Sponheim administration a permanent place in earth. By being a part of Hunolsteiner goods has been passed down in the family until 1786, retained earth be independent of Kurtrier Inge directional . A knightly dynasty named after earth, whose property fell to the St. Paulin Abbey in Trier in 1347, also had quite respectable possessions from imperial estates.

Ecclesiastically, the Erdener Aperkapelle, whose foundation probably went back to the Touler Abbey of St. Aper , belonged to the parish of Lösnich, which fell to the Teutonic Order through the Mönchengladbach Abbey and the Counts of Sayn in the 13th century . The parish seat was moved to Rachtig at the end of the 13th century . The Aperpatrozinium of Erden was forgotten in the 17th century. Since then, Saint Anna has been the patroness. The repeal of the church tithe by the French Revolution meant that Erden resigned from the Rachtiger parish association in 1802 and temporarily hired his own pastor.

Modern times

After the French transitional period that brought the dissolution of the old structures with it, the earth was like the Kröver Rich in the district of Bernkastel in Trier the Prussian Rhine Province . From 1946 on, Erden was part of the then newly formed state of Rhineland-Palatinate.

Municipal council

The local council in the earth consists of eight council members, who in the local elections on May 26, 2019 in a majority vote were elected, and the volunteer local mayor as chairman.

Village culture

Earth is shaped by viticulture ; Today there are still more than a dozen wineries . The most famous wine location is the " Erdener Treppchen ". Voluntary fire brigade, parish and several associations shape the cultural village life. In reference to the first sentence of the Bible , “In the beginning God created heaven and earth”, the local congregation Erden jokingly describes itself as the oldest village in the world. Worth seeing in Erden is the church, various crossroads and old winegrowers' houses as well as the Roman wine press on the other side of the Moselle.

Regular events

Local festivals and wine festivals take place regularly, including the wine and fountain festival, the Erden wine fair, the winegrowers', wine and street festivals on the first weekend in October or the parish festival.

Economy and Infrastructure

The wine-growing plays an important role always, though today a large majority of the population lives on other economic sectors. Tourism developed in the 20th century, often referred to as "tourism" in the Moselle region. In Erden there is a 1.5 hectare campsite as well as numerous commercial and private room rental companies with several hundred guest beds. The local community is part of the Trier Region Transport Association (VRT) .

The Hochmosel crossing was built right next to earth .
