With the foundation of the Cistercian virgin monastery by Bishop Brunward von Schwerin in 1232, the place Rühn (as Run ) was mentioned for the first time. The monastery was the largest landowner in the area before secularization . The monastery was closed in 1756.
The place Rühn was almost completely destroyed in the Thirty Years War . Of the former thirteen farm positions, only six remained, apart from the consequences of the war, the plague came in 1637. Many of the residents also fled from the chaos of war. Shortly before the end of the war in 1642, 132 people had already settled in Rühn - Pustohl.

The municipality of Rühn has a coat of arms, a flag and an official seal. The coat of arms was approved by the Ministry of the Interior on April 5, 2007 and registered under the number 309 of the coat of arms of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.
- Description of coat of arms
- "In gold, an oblique left blue wavy strip, accompanied: above by a black Gothic group of three windows, below by a black six-spoke, twelve-blade mill wheel, from which a black hop leaf with tendril and silver umbel grows obliquely on the left."
- meaning
The coat of arms shows the history of the municipality of Rühn, its location on the Warnow and important historical branches of employment. In 1232 the place "Run" was first mentioned in connection with the foundation of a Benedictine monastery by Bishop Brunward von Schwerin. May 14, 1233 is considered to be the actual founding day: Gerhard II , Archbishop of Bremen, confirmed the establishment of the monastery according to the Rule of St. Benedict . In the coat of arms the monastery is symbolized by the typical three-window group pars-pro-toto. The hop leaf, the umbel and the tendril indicate agriculture as the main line of business. When the monastery was founded, Mecklenburg was an important hop growing area. At first it was not grown in fields, but in the monastery garden. According to the official register of 1579, it was one of the most important crops after rye and barley, the yields of which exceeded those of oats, wheat or buckwheat. The mill wheel symbolizes the handicraft that was strongly represented in the village in earlier times. According to tradition, it has two watermills, one on Lake Rühn and later one in Hof Rühn, the building of which is still there. There was also a windmill. The blue wavy bar represents the location of the municipality on the Warnow.
- Flag description
- “The flag is made of a yellow cloth. It is covered with the figures of the municipal coat of arms: on the left diagonally divided by a blue wavy strip, on the leech above a black Gothic three-window group, on the flying end below a black six-spoke, twelve-blade mill wheel, from which a black hop leaf with tendril and silver umbel grows diagonally to the left. The Gothic three-window group takes up half, the mill wheel with hop leaf and umbel 11/18 the height of the flag cloth; the height of the flag cloth is related to the length like 3 to 5. "
- Official seal
The official seal shows the municipal coat of arms with the inscription "• GEMEINDE RÜHN •".
