Scott County is a county in the state of Virginia in the United States . In 2000 , the county had 23,403 residents and a population density of 17 people per square kilometer. The county seat is Gate City . The county is part of the dry counties , which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.

Scott County is located almost in the extreme southwest of Virginia, borders Tennessee to the south , is about 20 km from Kentucky in the northwest and has an area of 1,395 square kilometers, of which five square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Russell County , Washington County , Lee County, and Wise County .

It was formed in 1814 from parts of Lee County, Russell County, and Washington County. It is named after General Winfield Scott .

Scott County had a population of 23,403 as of the 2000 census . 343 of these people lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 9,795 households and 7,023 families. The population density was 17 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 98.51 percent white, 0.59 percent African American, 0.14 percent Native American, 0.07 percent Asian, 0.02 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.15 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.52 percent were from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.42 percent of the population.
Of the 9,795 households, 27.6 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 59.4 percent were married couples living together, 9.0 percent were single mothers, 28.3 percent were non-families, 26.1 percent were single households and 13.1 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.35 and the average family size was 2.82 people.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 20.6 percent of residents under the age of 18, 7.5 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 27.3 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, and 26.8 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 17.8 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females there were 93.3 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were statistically 90.7 men.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 27,339 , and the median income for a family is $ 33,163. Males had a median income of $ 28,328 versus $ 20,553 for females. The per capita income was $ 15,073. 13.0 percent of families and 16.8 percent of the population lived below the poverty line. These included 20.1 percent of children and adolescents under the age of 18 and 20.5 percent of residents aged 65 or over.
