The Scottish FA Cup was played for the 113th time in 1997/98 . The most important Scottish football cup competition, which was directed by the Scottish Football Association, began in November 1997 and ended with the final on May 16, 1998 in Celtic Park in Glasgow. Defending champion FC Kilmarnock , who prevailed against FC Falkirk in the previous year's final , was eliminated in this year's round of 16 against Ayr United . With a 2-1 win over the Glasgow Rangers , Heart of Midlothian celebrated the sixth cup success in the club's history. The two teams faced each other for the third time in the final of the FA Cup after 1903 and 1976 . For the Hearts it was the first cup victory since 1956 after 4 defeats in the final as a result and the sixth in total after 1891 , 1896 , 1901 , 1906 and 1956. By winning the cup, the Hearts were able to overtake Aberdeen FC in the all-time ranking of Scottish Cup winners and from 4th place. As a cup winner, the club from Edinburgh started in the following European Cup of the 1998/99 cup winners season and was eliminated there against the Spanish club RCD Mallorca .
