The Scottish Football League Premier Division was played for the fourth time in 1978/79 . It was also the 82nd edition of a top soccer division within the Scottish Football League in which the Scottish champions were determined. In the 1978/79 season, 10 clubs competed against each other in a total of 36 game days. Each team played twice at home and twice against every other team. The 2-point rule applied . In the event of a tie, the goal difference counted .
The championship won for the 31st time in the club's history Celtic Glasgow . Celtic thus qualified as champion for the following European Cup of National Champions season 1979/80 . Third and fourth place finishers, Dundee United and FC Aberdeen qualified for the UEFA Cup . As cup winners , the Glasgow Rangers qualified for the European Cup Winners' Cup . Heart of Midlothian and Motherwell FC were relegated to the First Division at the end of the season . With 22 hits was Andy Ritchie from Greenock Morton scorer.
