The University of Mannheim ( UMA ) is a university in Mannheim, Baden-Württemberg and - founded in 1907 as a municipal commercial college and renamed University in 1967 - one of the younger universities in Germany . Located in Mannheim Palace , it sees itself in the tradition of the Palatinate Academy of Sciences, founded in 1763 .

The university has five faculties, economics and law , business administration , social sciences , the philosophy faculty as well as business informatics and business mathematics . The medical faculty in Mannheim, on the other hand, belongs to the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg . In 2005 the Mannheim Business School was also founded. The Graduate School for Economics and Social Sciences (GESS), established in 2007, has been funded since the first round of the federal government's Excellence Initiative and continued to be financed in the second round from 2012. The university offers bachelor's, master's and state examination degrees. Mannheim is known for its interdisciplinary approach; Many subjects, for example in social sciences, computer science , law or the humanities , offer the opportunity to acquire well-founded knowledge of economics in addition to the main subject. Particularly noteworthy is the bachelor's degree in corporate law (LL.B.) , which ends after three years in a legal business administration degree, entitles to a master's degree in business administration or law and is also recognized as an intermediate stage of the state examination ( Mannheim model ).

history

Main entrance of the university with the historical lettering of the business school

The University of Mannheim has a historical focus on economics. Its roots go back to the municipal commercial college founded in 1907 on the initiative of the Mannheim bourgeoisie. Supported by the Chamber of Commerce, the university, which trained young businesspeople until the 1930s, turned into a center of higher education. In addition to events in economics, lectures in philosophy, history, art and natural sciences were offered. In the inter-war period, the Institute for Psychology and Education and an interpreting institute were added.

The commercial college was incorporated into Heidelberg University in 1933. During National Socialism , only three of the 14 Jewish lecturers at the former commercial college survived the Holocaust . Among the victims is also the head of the psychological institute and rector of the Otto Selz commercial college . Otto-Selz-Strasse, which leads around the university from the east, is a reminder of the recognized researcher of thought processes.

The university was re-established in 1946 as a state business school, which took on a sponsorship for the Königsberg commercial college in the early 1960s . The university's emblem , which symbolizes the close connection with the city of Mannheim, dates from the post-war period . The inscription IN OMNIBUS VERITAS is taken from Karl-Theodor's statutes, with which Karl-Theodor established the Electoral Palatinate Academy of Sciences in 1763. "In all truth, be the highest law - in omnibus veritas suprema lex esto" is the full quote.

Since the official appointment to the university in December 1967, the number of students and the range of subjects have grown significantly. Today five faculties offer opportunities for academic training and further education.

In 2016/2017, the University of Mannheim tried unsuccessfully to establish a branch in Heilbronn with an economic profile, which should have been financed from funds from the Dieter Schwarz Foundation based in Neckarsulm . The University of Mannheim lost out to three other universities in the negotiations, including the Technical University of Munich .

campus

A large part of the University of Mannheim is located in Mannheim Palace , one of the largest baroque palaces in Europe. With the help of companies, foundations and private sponsors, lecture halls and libraries were renovated in the 2000s as part of the “Renaissance of the Baroque Palace” and equipped with the latest technology. The campus project was continued until 2015 as "Renaissance 2.0". The campus is divided into a campus east (building from the train station to the castle and L 1, 1) and a campus west (A 3, A 5 and B 6).

The University of Mannheim maintains contacts with more than 450 scientific institutions around the world. It maintains a variety of exchange programs and offers several international degree programs and double degrees. The semester times are based on the internationally prevailing rhythm with lectures from September to December and February to June. The introduction of the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) also makes it easier for German students to study abroad and for foreign students to study in Mannheim. A number of internationally oriented master’s courses are also characteristic:

  • MBA from Mannheim Business School
  • Mannheim Master in Management
  • Master in Political Science
  • Master of Economics
  • Master of Comparative Law

Profile sharpening

The profile of the University of Mannheim is shaped by economics and social sciences. The Philosophical Faculty is the second strongest faculty after the Business Administration and offers history, media and communication studies, German, English and Romance studies as well as philosophy. Typical for Mannheim are courses with an economic component such as the Bachelor and Master “Culture and Economy” or the course “Corporate Lawyer”. Economics, sociology, politics and psychology are traditionally strong in Mannheim. Mathematics and computer science or business informatics can also be studied at the University of Mannheim. The profile formation took place in the 2000s under the rectors Frankenberg and Arndt and was not undisputed. The highlight of the public discussion was A. An article in the FAZ under the title Students are not farm animals that appeared on October 25, 2006. The process was finally assessed as an exemplary reform of a university.

Faculties

The University of Mannheim currently has five faculties 14 Bachelor -Studiengänge ( B.Sc. , BA , B.Ed. and LL.B. ) and 16 Master programs ( M.Sc. , MA , M.Ed. , LL. M. , MBA and MCBL ), ten teacher training courses and the state examination for lawyers.

Faculty of Business Administration

With around 3975 students - about one in five from abroad - the Faculty of Business Administration, founded in 1969, is the largest faculty at the university. With around eight applicants for a study place, the business administration faculty is one of the most competitive courses in the country. Professors Christian Homburg and Martin Weber took first places in the research-related Handelsblatt ranking of all (approx. 1000) business administration professors at German universities. The Mannheim Master in Management course ranks 14th in the International Masters in Management 2012 ranking by the Financial Times . At the Faculty includes 31 chairs and the Institute for Market-Oriented Management (imu) , the Institute for Small Business Research (ifm) and the Institute of Banking and Finance . In March 2000 it received accreditation from AACSB International and in June 2004 accreditation from EQUIS . In addition to the classic courses, the Mannheim Business School , which is part of the faculty, offers the Master of Business Administration (MBA) postgraduate course . The business administration faculty in Mannheim has also been accredited by the British Association of MBAs (AMBA) since March 11, 2008 and is the first German university to have the so-called " Triple Crown " (AACSB, EQUIS and AMBA). 74 universities worldwide are currently awarded this triple seal of approval.

Philosophical Faculty

The second largest faculty at the university with around 3050 students offers the largest range of courses with a large number of Bachelor, Master and teaching degree programs. In doing so, it cooperates with the University of Heidelberg and with the other faculties at the University of Mannheim, particularly in the areas of economics and social sciences . The Philosophical Faculty is home to the Historical Institute, Philosophy, the Seminars for Linguistics and Literature Studies as well as Media and Communication Studies.

The rectorate planned to dissolve the Philosophical Faculty in the course of the structural and development planning and to distribute the departments between the Faculty of Law and Economics (Historical Institute) and the Faculty of Social Sciences (other areas). The rectorate met with broad resistance. Subsequent plans from November 2007 to reorganize the philosophical faculty with the social science faculty into one major faculty with two independent departments were not implemented. Today, the philosophy faculty is characterized by the possibility of combining one of its subjects as a major with in-depth knowledge of economics in the course culture and economics .

Faculty of Law and Economics

The formerly independent faculties for economics and law were merged in 2004 into one faculty with two departments.

Law Department

The Law Department covers the areas of civil law , public law and criminal law . Approx. 1460 students are registered in the Law Department. The focus of the research lies in the area of business law and is characterized by intensive interlinking with the area of business administration (in particular: marketing, management, tax, accounting, human resources).

Since autumn 2008, Mannheim has been the first German university to offer a bachelor's degree called Corporate Lawyer University of Mannheim LL.B. which can be expanded to the first state examination with further studies. In the Bachelor’s degree, which is already a professional qualification, the entire civil law and public commercial law are dealt with. A third of the study time includes economics subjects offered by the Faculty of Business Administration. After this basic training, there is a specialization in the areas of human resources or tax and accounting. The bachelor's degree already includes the civil law exams for the first state examination. These can be "layered" as part of the four-semester postgraduate course, which covers public law and criminal law. After completing the postgraduate course, all you need to do to obtain the first state examination is the criminal and public law exams. The course in corporate law at the University of Mannheim LL.B. makes it possible for the first time in Germany to obtain a bachelor's degree, which allows the graduate, in addition to an immediate entry into the profession, to study with the classic study of business administration (Master), a further legal degree with a focus on business law (Master of Law) or to continue the classic German legal training, the state examination . Furthermore, the best 5% of the year are already eligible for doctorates with a Bachelor's degree. The classic state examination course was abolished in the fall semester of 2009.

As an advanced degree, the department offers a Master of Laws ( LL.M. ) with an optional specialization in tax law or employment law and a mandatory semester abroad. The Master of Laws (LL.M.) degree in competition and regulatory law will begin for the first time in the fall semester of 2017 . In addition, the University of Mannheim, in cooperation with the Australian University of Adelaide, offers a joint master’s degree to acquire the Master of Comparative Business Law (MCBL) .

Research and practice transfer are supported by a number of institutes, including the Institute for Company Law (IURUM), the Institute for Insurance Science, the Institute for German, European and International Medical Law, Health Law and Bioethics (IMGB), the Center for Insolvency and Reorganization (ZIS ), the Interdisciplinary Center for Intellectual Property (IZG) and the Center for Corporate Succession (zentUma). Well-known professors in the department include Georg Bitter in insolvency law, Carsten Schäfer in corporate law and Jochen Taupitz in medical law.

Department of Economics

The economics department is one of the leading economics faculties in Germany and Europe. In 2017, as in 2011 and 2013, it was named the most research-oriented economics faculty in Germany by the Handelsblatt. The Times Higher Education World University Ranking lists Mannheim economics at number 1 in Germany, number 8 among European universities and number 33 worldwide. In the QS World University Ranking, the University of Mannheim also ranks first in Germany as the only German department in the top 50 in the field of Economics & Econometrics.

In the spring semester of 2019, around 650 students were enrolled in the Bachelor's and around 160 in the Master's degree in Economics. At the department, 22 professors research and teach in the fields of macro and microeconomics, public finance, economic policy, econometrics and international economics, plus several junior professorships, private lecturers, academic advisors, employees and lecturers. The chairs for economic history and statistics are also part of the economics department.

Based on the Anglo-Saxon postgraduate training , the traditional professorial doctorate has been replaced by a three-year structured doctoral program. For this purpose, the Center for Doctoral Studies in Economics (CDSE) was set up at the Graduate School of Economic and Social Sciences (GESS), which is funded as part of the nationwide Excellence Initiative. The CDSE maintains a partnership and an exchange program with Yale University and is part of the European Network for Training in Economic Research (ENTER), an initiative of Europe's leading economic departments. In addition to the University of Mannheim, these are the only German universities to include the Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona , Université Libre de Bruxelles , University College London , Universidad Carlos III de Madrid , Stockholm School of Economics , Universiteit van Tilburg and Université de Toulouse 1 . In addition to ENTER, the Economics Department is involved in three EU research networks and provides eight Research Fellows at the Center for Economic Policy Research , London. In addition, there is cooperation with the Ifo Institute , ZEW - Leibniz Center for European Economic Research , GESIS - Leibniz Institute for Social Sciences , Mannheim Center for European Social Research (MZES) and the Institute for SME Research . Also special is the agreement with Heidelberg University , under which students can have courses from the other university in the specialization area credited.

With the aim of attracting external people to the University of Mannheim, the Economics department organizes a lecture series every semester together with the Dean's Office. Past lecture series were under the main topics "Flight & Migration" (2016), "Social Inequality" (2016/17), "Plural Economics" (2017), "Development Economics" (2017/18), "The New Normal" (2018 ), "Health Economics" (2018/19) and "Environmental Economics" (2019). Well-known professors such as Hans-Werner Sinn and Lars Feld , politicians such as Dietmar Bartsch (Die Linke), the former judge at the Federal Constitutional Court Udo di Fabio , as well as practitioners from organizations such as the OECD , World Bank , UN , ECB and EU were present for the lectures -Commission , Bundesbank , GIZ and KfW won.

Around 1,600 students study at the Faculty of Social Sciences . You will be taught by 38 professors and 93 scientific staff. The faculty includes the fields of sociology, political science and psychology. The department of education was abolished by reassignment of the professorships. In numerous rankings, the faculty's individual subjects repeatedly occupy top positions in an international and national comparison.

Faculty of Business Informatics and Business Mathematics

Faculty of Business Mathematics and Business Informatics in square B6

The Faculty of Business Informatics and Business Mathematics is the youngest faculty at the university. This emerged in spring 2011 from the former Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science. The economic reorientation is based on the so-called small exchange of subjects with the University of Heidelberg and the profile formation of the University of Mannheim, on which the university committees agreed in 2007. At that time, the University of Mannheim handed over technical informatics to Heidelberg in order to strengthen business informatics in return. This exchange of subjects was highly controversial in Mannheim. Today the faculty has 22 professorships, four of which are junior professorships, which train around 1,050 students. In addition to a bachelor's or master's degree in business informatics or business mathematics, the faculty also offers mathematics and computer science for student teachers.
