The 71st Emmy Awards in the Prime Time category (originally: 71st Primetime Emmy Awards ) took place on September 22, 2019 at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles ( California ). The nominations were announced on July 16, 2019 by D'Arcy Carden and Ken Jeong . Programs that were broadcast between June 1, 2018 and May 31, 2019 were taken into account. In the United States, the award ceremony was broadcast by Fox . The Creative Arts Emmy Awards had previously been presented on September 8 and 9, 2019 . They honor guest actors in television series, animation series and documentaries, but also television professionals in technical categories, including production design , costumes , camera and editing .

The final season of the drama series Game of Thrones (14) received the most nominations , followed by the miniseries When They See Us (11) and the comedy series Barry (9). Together with the Creative Arts Emmy Awards awarded in the secondary categories, Game of Thrones received 32 nominations this year, setting a new record. This had previously been held by the series New York Cops - NYPD Blue (27 nominations) at the 1994 awards ceremony . The TV channel HBO , which broadcasts Game of Thrones , also received the most nominations for its formats (137, including Creative Arts Emmys), followed by the streaming provider Netflix (117).

Game of Thrones was able to live up to its role as a favorite and won a total of twelve prizes at the Creative Arts Emmy Awards, including best drama series and supporting actor in a drama series ( Peter Dinklage ). The multi-part television channel Chernobyl received ten Emmys , followed by the comedy series The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel (8) and the Oscar- winning documentary Free Solo , which was able to convert all of its seven nominations into victories.
