Norbert Longinus Johannes "Noppie" Koch (born March 22, 1932 in Utrecht ; † December 7, 2010 in Nieuwegein ) was a Dutch cyclist and legendary pacemaker in stalker races from the 1960s to the 1980s.

Athletic career

In the early 1950s, Norbert Koch began his career as an amateur cyclist. In 1954 he was third in the Dutch rail championships in sprint , then he increasingly shifted to standing races. In 1955 he was runner-up in this discipline in the national championships; In 1959, 1962 and 1963 he was the Dutch master of the stayers. In 1959 he was third in the European and 1959 and 1960 third in the World Championships.

Subsequently (at the beginning of the 1964 season) Koch gave up active cycling and became the pacemaker in stayer and derny races . He celebrated his first international success in 1966 at the World Track Championships in Frankfurt am Main , when he led his compatriot Piet de Wit to the title - as in 1967. In 1966 he was third among the professionals with driver Leo Proost . With Mattheus Pronk , Koch became world champion of the amateur standingers in 1979 and 1981, and vice world champion in 1980, 1982 and 1983.

1979 and 1982 was martin venix behind Norbert Koch champion of professional uprights. There were also two vice world championships, 1978 before Venix and 1985 before Danny Clark . Koch was also successful as a pacemaker on the Derny . In 1970 , Theo Verschueren set a world hour record over 64.546 km behind Koch's lead on his home track in the Antwerp Sportpaleis .

Koch ended his career after a serious fall in the Derny race at the Cologne six-day race in 1988/89, in the u. a. and Dietrich Thurau was involved.

Honors

In April 2015, a memorial was unveiled for Norbert Koch and Martin Venix in Utrecht at the Galgenwaard stadium . It was modeled on the photo below from the 1979 World Cup , where Koch led Martin Venix to the world title (with the difference that Koch wears a "1" on the front of his suit instead of a "6" as in the photo) . It is the first monument in the world dedicated to standing sport.
