Paulus Manker
Paulus Manker (born January 25, 1958 in Vienna ) is an Austrian actor , film and theater director as well as author and screenwriter .
Life
Youth and Beginnings
Manker is the son of the actress Hilde Sochor and the director and theater director Gustav Manker . He grew up in the first district of Vienna and reported about it in the ORF documentary “ Meine Innere Stadt ” (2017).
Manker was trained in directing and acting (with Susi Nicoletti ) at the Max Reinhardt Seminar in Vienna .
Manker's first engagements took him to the Vienna Burgtheater (1979, comedy of seduction by Arthur Schnitzler , director: Horst Zankl , set design: Hans Hollein , costumes: Karl Lagerfeld ), to the Wiener Festwochen (1980, The last days of humanity by Karl Kraus , director: Hans Hollmann ) and then to the co-determination model at the Schauspielhaus Frankfurt (1980/1981, directors Johannes Schaaf and Wilfried Minks ), to the Thalia Theater in Hamburg (1982, Jean Genet : under supervision with Sven-Eric Bechtolf ) and 1983 to the Residenztheater in Munich, where he worked for the first time with the director Peter Zadek ( Ibsen’s master builder Solness with Barbara Sukowa and Hans-Michael Rehberg ), of which he was a member for many years from then on.
Manker first appeared as a film actor in 1979 in Lemminge (directed by Michael Haneke ), followed by Exit - Nur kein Panik (1980) and Die Ausgesperrten (1982, based on the novel by Elfriede Jelinek ), directed by Franz Novotny , Die Macht der Demokratie by Alexander Kluge (1983) and Who was Edgar Allan? (1984, also directed by Michael Haneke, for whom Manker also worked as assistant director in 1985 on the TV film Fraulein ) and Luc Bondy's Das weite Land (1987) alongside Michel Piccoli .
“Zadek actor” and directing work
Peter Zadek brought Manker into the ensemble of the Deutsches Schauspielhaus in Hamburg in 1986, to which Manker was a member from 1986 to 1989. Here he was seen for the first time in 1986 in the leading role of the anti-Semitic Jewish philosopher Otto Weininger in the furious piece Weininger's Night by Joshua Sobol . He then appeared on stage as Octavius Caesar in Shakespeare's Julius Caesar with Ulrich Tukur , as a journalist Lindekuh in Wedekinds Musik with Susanne Lothar and as a girl dealer Casti-Piani in Peter Zadek's legendary production of Frank Wedekind's Lulu .
As a film director appeared Manker first time in 1985 in appearance, his film dirt experienced at the Cannes Film Festival in 1985 in the "Quinzaine des Realisateurs" his premiere . He received several awards at other festivals and was made into a novel by Thorsten Becker . Weininger's Night followed in 1988, The Eye of the Taifun in 1992 with the Einstürzende Neubauten , 1995 The Moore's Head based on a screenplay by Michael Haneke with Gert Voss in his first film role, in 1996 the documentary Hans Hollein - everything is architecture and various short films, including that in 2004 Portrait of his 80-year-old mother, the actress Hilde Sochor .
“As a director, Manker experiments with psychological shockers ('Schmutz', 'Weininger's Night') and involves viewers in his aggressive multimedia plays. Manker's general topic is the creeping madness of a society to which he holds a distorting mirror. "
Manker directed the theater for the first time in 1988 at the Vienna Volkstheater at Weininger's Night by Joshua Sobol , where he himself also played the leading role, which became his star role. The performance became Manker's greatest “triumph” up to then and the play was then also made into a film by himself.
"One rarely comes across a similarly sensual and intellectually exciting, enlightening, fantastic film."
Member of the ensemble at the Burgtheater
In 1990 Manker moved back to the Vienna Burgtheater under Claus Peymann and played Carlos in Peymann's production of Goethe's Clavigo (with Ulrich Mühe as Clavigo), in Peter Zadek's production of Shakespeare's The Merchant of Venice (with Gert Voss as Shylock and Eva Mattes as Portia) and in Beckett's Waiting for Godot the Pozzo (director: Cesare Lievi). In 1993 he directed Ferenc Molnárs Liliom at the Burgtheater (with Karlheinz Hackl in the title role and Andrea Clausen ) and in 1996 The Threepenny Opera by Bertolt Brecht (with Fritz Schediwy and Ingrid Caven and with costumes by Vivienne Westwood ).
Manker inspired the author Werner Kofler to write the diatribe Manker (Invention) in 1999 and was involved in some veritable theater scandals, such as Zadek's Alice in Wonderland (1996, Münchner Kammerspiele ), in which he played the white rabbit. Manker caused heated discussions, especially as Richard III. (1997) about Shakespeare, which was staged by Peter Zadek at the Münchner Kammerspiele and in which conflicts arose with the theater and its director Dieter Dorn because Manker “undisciplined, drunk and down to the bone rotten " , whereupon the performance was canceled despite the enormous public success. "A great success is crushed out of faint-heartedness that could have been played for years." (Peter Zadek)
“One would like to travel to Munich, to 1997, and once again Zadek's 'Richard III.' see, the production that, when it premiered at the Wiener Festwochen, annoyed some critics so much that they demanded that Zadek repay his director's fee. It must have been because the men wore contemporary tights and the women wore late-medieval hoods, there was actually no stage design either, and in Munich, if memories are not deceptive, Sibylle Canonica, who wore shoes, performed with anger and force the foot of Paulus Manker, who wore no shoes, and after that Manker's Richard was even worse, even better. And you saw, you felt and heard again that the anger and magic of a Shakespeare drama don't need much more than bodies, voices and a director who has the right rhythm. "
Collaboration with Joshua Sobol
The Israeli author Joshua Sobol is Manker's most important artistic partner. Manker has been working with him since 1985 (" Weininger's Night "). Together they realized a number of projects that were supposed to create new spaces and forms of theatrical experience: in 1995 they (together with Niklas Frank ) adapted his accounting with his father Hans Frank , Hitler's governor general in Poland. In the Theater an der Wien , the audience was rotated from scene to scene on the revolving stage , and with the help of the hydraulics, it was also moved to the lower stage. They called it a "Grottenbahnfahrt des Horens" and used film recordings and documents from Frank's private family album. Austria's FPÖ boss Jörg Haider complained because he was quoted with cheering calls when Hans Frank went to the gallows.
In 1996, together with Sobol, Manker created their most successful project to date: Alma - A Show Biz ans Ende , an interactive simultaneous drama about the artist museum Alma Mahler-Werfel and her men, in which over 50 scenes took place simultaneously in the rooms of the Art Nouveau Sanatorium Purkersdorf , and which has become a cult piece and has since been performed in a different performance location every year, has already traveled to three continents and led to over 470 performances in the cities of Alma Mahler's life: 2002 Venice (in the Armenian Palazzo Zenobio), 2003 Lisbon (Convento dos Inglesinhos) , 2004 Los Angeles (Los Angeles Theater in Downtown LA), 2005 Petronell Castle near Vienna, 2006 Kronprinzenpalais in Berlin , 2007 in the Kurhaus Semmering on Semmering and 2009 Jerusalem in the former central prison of the British Mandate Administration . The performance caused a lot of dust as the Israeli Defense Ministry, who runs the museum, censored Sobol's play. 2008–2013 the performance location was Vienna ( Telegraphenamt am Börseplatz ). The viewer interactively becomes the designer of his own theater evening and “companion of the characters traveling through the journey-drama, who chooses the events, the path and the person he follows himself, and thereby builds, destroys and creates his own version of the polydrama lets arise again ”1997–1999 the play was filmed as“ Alma - the widow of the four arts ”as a three-part television film. In the summer of 2014 "Alma" could be seen in the Serbenhalle , a disused factory hall in Wiener Neustadt , where in May 2015 it celebrated its 20th anniversary. In the performance, which he also produces himself, Manker embodies the painter Oskar Kokoschka .
In 2000, Manker / Sobol created the cyber show F @ lco at the Ronacher revue theater in Vienna, a multimedia musical about the Austrian pop star Falco (with André Eisermann , Hansi Lang , Roman Gregory , Georgij Makazaria and with Falco's bandleader Thomas Rabitsch ), which was performed on an in The stage built into the auditorium was presented in @ -form in the form of a rock concert with laser , 3D animations and a water screen, in which the audience was directly involved, and could smoke, consume and dance. Opposed to this were the “distant” spectators in the boxes, who could see both the play and the participating audience.
In 2003, as a continuation of the collaboration with Sobol, an invitation to Tel Aviv followed to premier Sobol's iWitness there at the Cameri Theater , the story of the conscientious objector Franz Jägerstätter , executed by the National Socialists , as a parallel to the soldiers of the Israeli army who refused to serve in the occupied territories . The performance made the young Itay Tiran a star in Israel.
Film career
Manker played the organist in Joseph Vilsmaier's Schlafes Bruder (1994), in Michael Haneke's Das Schloss (1998) and in Code: unbekannt with Juliette Binoche (1999), in Jo Baier's Wambo the brutal father of Walter Sedlmayr (2000) and took him with him in 2006 Michael Glawogger's film “ Slumming ” took part in the competition at the Berlinale , in which Manker played the homeless drunkard Franz Kallmann in the style of a poète maudit with a “hyperplastic presence” . Manker mingled in the Westbahnhof milieu in Vienna during the shooting and played a scene in a fully drunk state "after 17 whiskeys" in order to be able to interpret his role as authentically as possible, and "literally unhooked his role" ( ARTE ) and " gives his performances the uniqueness that big theater and big film win not least because of that: because they keep their audience at a distance in an intimidating way ".
“Franz Kallmann, poet, drunkard and bourgeoisie is only one of the central characters in Michael Glawogger's new feature film Slumming, but he attracts everyone's attention. This is because he is embodied by Paulus Manker - who refrains from his persona as the enfant terrible of the cultural scene. For Manker, Kallmann is more of a performance than a role - more of an implosion than incorporation. […] Kallmann is a one-man show. A spectacle of Viennese ugliness "
Recent past and present
Further theater works brought Paulus Manker together with Luc Bondy ( Horváth's “ Figaro lets divorce ” 1998), with Christoph Schlingensief (“ Foreigners out! Schlingensief's Container ”, 2000) and again and again with Peter Zadek (Polonius in “ Hamlet ”, with Angela Winkler and Otto Sander , Hamburg, 2000), "Der Jude von Malta" (with Gert Voss , Burgtheater, 2001) as well as with Dieter Giesing in pieces by Botho Strauss , "Pancomedia" (Burgtheater, 2001) and "Die Zeit und das Zimmer" ( Schauspielhaus Bochum , 2005).
In 2008 there was a legal dispute because Manker had described the Carinthian population as "cretins" in a television program , who were striving for "ethnic purity". Jörg Haider's BZÖ seconded the plaintiff and with the help of Stefan Petzner even provided the lawyer, but was defeated in court.
In 2010, after a long absence from the stage at the Salzburg Festival , Manker appeared as Theseus in the acclaimed performance of Jean Racines Phädra at the side of Sunnyi Melles (director: Matthias Hartmann , stage: Johannes Schütz ), a co-production with the Viennese Burgtheater . In the same year he published a comprehensive book about his father, the director, set designer and theater director Gustav Manker . In 2010 Manker received the audience award of the Austrian theater award “Nestroy” , for which he thanked with a pointed speech against cultural politics and with a strong commitment to independent groups.
"I think the strength in the theater comes from the fighters, from the chilli peppers , from the uncomfortable, from the monomaniac , from the continuously and criminally undersubsidized, the strength in the theater comes from people like Ulrike Kaufmann and Erwin Piplits ."
In 2011 Manker published a book about the forgotten theater man Walter Bruno Iltz , whose estate he discovered and whose alleged proximity to National Socialism he thus refuted.
On July 16, 2013, on the occasion of Richard Wagner's 200th birthday, the premiere of the simultaneous drama Wagnerdämmerung, staged and written by Manker, took place in the former K. uk post and telegraph office in Vienna, which in the sense of Wagner's total work of art Theater, Raum, Language, music and dance combined. The production was accompanied by an exhibition of contemporary artists curated by Manker, at which Hermann Nitsch , Hans Hollein , Erwin Wurm , ONA B. , Michael Bielický , Michael Kienzer , Mara Mattuschka , Karl Ferdinand Kratzl , Katharina Razumovsky , Josef Trattner , Reinhard Trinkler and 29 other artists participated.
On June 23, 2017, Paulus Manker was released by artistic director Dieter Wedel one day before the premiere of the play Martin Luther - The attack at the Bad Hersfeld Festival . Manker announced a lawsuit against the festival. He was to appear as one of four main actors as Martin Luther.
In the summer of 2018, Manker staged " The Last Days of Mankind " by Karl Kraus in a seven-hour simultaneous version in an old arms factory in Wiener Neustadt (" Serbenhalle ") and celebrated a gigantic success with it. The courier called the performance the "theater event of the year". On August 25, 2018, Manker's production of Joshua Sobol's "Alma" celebrated its 500th performance and, with a running time of 23 years, is the most successful Austrian theater production in post-war history. Paulus Manker has been married to Elisabeth Auer since August 2018 , with whom he had previously been in a relationship for 14 years. In an episode of the ORF talk show "Stöckl", Manker described the turquoise-blue federal government as " bastards" in 2018 . A subsequent complaint by the FPÖ that the objectivity requirement and the substantive principles of the ORF law had been violated was rejected by KommAustria . There is no violation of the law because the moderator Barbara Stöckl distanced herself from Manker's statements and the public's interest in information and the right to freedom of expression outweigh the interests of the complainant.
reception
Manker is regarded as one of the most idiosyncratic German-speaking actors who polarizes the audience like no other, he is considered to be “sensitive, hurtful, ingenious to the point of intolerance”, as a “powerful all-rounder of the Austrian cultural scene, provocateur and enfant terrible.” But also journalists Gives “unusual to unfriendly interview answers” and thus causes “great irritation”.
