Location of Penting in the Free State of Bavaria

Penting is a district of the city of Neunburg vorm Wald in the Schwandorf district in Bavaria . The parish village, which currently has 405 inhabitants, is located in the Upper Palatinate Forest Nature Park and in the Upper Palatinate Lake District and was the seat of the Penting community until 1978.
In 2016, the village was awarded a gold medal at the district level and a silver medal at the district level (2017) in the competition “ Our village has a future ” of the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL) . In addition, Penting has been the location of the city of Neunburg vorm Wald's first community wind power plant since 2016 . This could be implemented as one of the last wind turbines after the 10-H regulation came into force in Bavaria. The place is a major hub on regional hiking and biking trails and is in close proximity to the predicate trail Goldsteig ( Marktredwitz - Passau ).

Geographical location and geology

Penting is 506  m above sea level. NHN about five kilometers south of Neunburg vorm Wald on a ridge that separates the Schwarzachtal from the Bodenwöhr basin. Due to this exposed location, the place can be seen from afar, especially from the Schwarzachtal.

Penting is located in a hilly landscape typical of the Upper Palatinate Forest with large meadows and forest areas.

To the south of the village are the Stengweiher and numerous other small ponds as well as several natural streams that drain towards the Hammersee in Bodenwöhr .

The pile , a 150-kilometer-long geological fault line made of quartz rock , runs near Penting and runs from Nabburg in the Upper Palatinate to Upper Austria's Mühlviertel before Linz .

Local division

Penting is divided according to the principle of a clustered village into an old village center around the church and rectory and the newly designated building areas Penting-West (1989) and Penting-East (1993). Most of the village lies on a slight south-facing slope with a view of the Bodenwöhr basin. Penting has a largely intact historical town center.

The steeple of the Catholic parish church St. Nikolaus is a landmark that can be seen from afar and thus defines the townscape.

A special feature is a no longer walk, overgrown by high deciduous trees Hohlweg , the so-called Güllngasse that connects the center in a north-south direction with Unterpenting, which consists of several farms.

history

Foundation of the place and first mentioning (1266), Wittelsbacher (from around 1280)

No archaeological finds are known from Penting from the period up to the High Middle Ages . Nevertheless, the ending of the place name in -ing indicates an early medieval Bavarian settlement. The Nikolaus patronage as well as the comparatively large area approximately show a settlement and Christianization around the year 1200. It can be assumed that a noble landlord settled in Penting during this time. In 1140 Bishop Egilbert von Bamberg consecrated a wooden church in Penting, the first stone church was built around 1300.

Penting was first mentioned in a document in 1266 when Heinrich the Pötinger appeared as a witness in the convent . In 1280 Penting was demonstrably under the rule of the Wittelsbacher . The bailiwick of Penting was declared in 1285 in the Duke's Surbar as a sovereign property. In 1326 this statement was repeated, the place name "Pompting" appeared in the parish directory; In 1358 the place is documented under the name "Pönting". In the 15th century Penting belonged to the Dechanei Cham.

Hussite War, Regensburg monastery rule, Reformation and Counter-Reformation

In 1433 citizens and peasants from Pentingen also took part in the battle of Hiltersried against the Hussites . In 1472 the parish of Penting was assigned to the monastery of Our Lady of the Old Chapel in Regensburg by the Regensburg bishop Heinrich IV. Von Absberg . As early as 1482 there was a sacristan in Penting , whose secure income has been proven. From this sacristan office, the position of village school teacher developed over time.

From 1538 to 1625 the sovereign determined the denomination according to the principle of cuius regio eius religio . The parish of Penting became alternately Lutheran and Calvinist and, from 1625, Catholic again . Melchizedek Giegelsberger from Eschenbach, whose father was a citizen, notary and councilor there, served as a Calvinist in Hahnbach and Penting until his dismissal in 1625; In 1626 he got a new job in Nienburg, Anhalt .

During the Thirty Years War 1618-1648 troops also moved through Penting. Billing and looting of soldiers were not lacking. In 1626, many farmers fled Penting when soldiers of the so-called Truchseß Regiment were forcibly quartered in Penting. The Swedish invasion of Penting is documented around 1633. After the Swedish conquest of the neighboring town of Neunburg vorm Wald in 1641, the imperial regiment Briganza camped in the area between Penting and Pingarten to prepare for a siege of Neunburg. A copper engraving by Matthäus Merian attests to this event at the gates of Penting. Around 1700 Penting was ravaged by a fire.

The school in Penting was one of the oldest in the district. However, it was initially extremely unpopular with the population and when in 1788 the court owners of Penting were to be used financially to build and maintain the school and sacristan buildings, bitter resistance arose, which ended in 1791 with the seizure of the house owners. In 1809 there were 58 pupils and 47 pupils in Penting. Between 1800 and 1826, however, only one Pentinger, a budding theologian, studied at the University of Landshut .

Penting municipality (from 1818)

In 1818 the independent, political municipality Penting was established, which was one of 80 rural municipalities belonging to the district court of Neunburg vorm Wald . The municipality of Penting included the following districts: Wutzelskühn , Könneröd , Gonnersdorf , and from 1830 Fuchsenhof , Dorfmühle , Hartlshof , Poggersdorf , Reis , Wenigrötz , Wilbersdorf and Ziegelhütte . In 1823 Penting lost the forestry department due to the reorganization of the Bavarian forest districts. The register of the diocese of Regensburg from 1838 recorded 19 houses and 132 "souls" in the village. The pastor of the village, Johann Baptist Eberl, was not only a school inspector in Penting, but also one of the 414 members of the Historical Association for Upper Palatinate and Regensburg .

The volunteer fire brigade was founded in 1882 . Between 1893 and 1896 the Bodenwöhr – Neunburg railway line was built in front of the forest . Penting received its own train station at Wutzelskühn on the railway line to Neunburg. Passenger traffic was maintained until 1969.

In 1893, 1902 and 1913, fires destroyed the village again. On March 23, 1913 (Easter) Penting was the seat of the parish Penting and had 34 houses and 224 inhabitants.

In World War I four Pentinger citizens to death arrived. During the Weimar Republic, the poor rural population often suffered from poor living conditions. Many residents of the village found work in the brickworks of that time in Erzhäuser and Eichental and in the Fronberg ironworks .

Resistance of the pastor against National Socialism, forced laborers and concentration camp death marches

The local pastor Alois Gruber offered active resistance against the Nazi regime during the National Socialist era . He made massive criticism of the prevailing politics, stood in the way of the local NSDAP members and kept the local youth away from the youth organizations of the National Socialists . The clergyman also took part in a poster campaign against the Nazis. Gruber successfully defended the traditional church flag against the swastika flag until the end. In addition, the priest read pastoral letters against National Socialism in front of the parish.

During the Second World War , ten civil and 20 prisoners of war were housed on the farms in Penting. By the end of the war in 1945, up to 200 refugees found shelter and temporary accommodation in the farms in Penting and the surrounding area.

On April 21 and 22, 1945, around 200 concentration camp inmates moved from the Flossenbürg concentration camp through Penting. The people were of SS driven -Soldaten towards Egelsried through the town. The alleged destination of the death marches was the Dachau concentration camp . Many of the prisoners died of hunger and exhaustion. Others were shot in the street by the SS. The bodies were makeshift buried in the surrounding fields.

The US troops reached Penting shortly afterwards, on April 23, 1945. Before that, the anti-tank barriers were hastily removed by the population and white flags were raised. The Americans immediately arranged for the bodies of the concentration camp prisoners to be recovered and to be buried in the local cemetery. A total of 156 dead were recovered and buried in the Pentingen cemetery. In 1950 the dead were exhumed and buried in the Neunburg vorm Wald concentration camp cemetery , where numerous other concentration camp prisoners from the death marches around Neunburg were buried. The identity of the dead is largely unknown.

Albert Bauer era (1945–1978), incorporation (1972) and population growth

Albert Bauer from Penting was appointed as the first interim mayor by the American occupiers. He also remained the elected mayor of Penting until the end of Penting Township in 1978. In 1946 the districts of Dorfmühle and Wilbersdorf were incorporated into the municipality of Neunburg vorm Wald. In the course of the regional reform in 1972 , the entire municipality of Penting and its districts were incorporated into the municipality of Neunburg vorm Wald on May 1, 1978 . Mayor Albert Bauer resisted the connection to the city of Neunburg vorm Wald until the end.

Due to the designation of the new development areas Penting-West (1989) and Penting-East (1993), the number of inhabitants rose continuously from 1989 onwards. On July 8, 2016, Penting had 405 residents.

Religions

From 1538 to 1625, the denomination also changed in Penting according to the principle of cuius regio eius religio . The initially Catholic parish of Penting became alternately Lutheran and Calvinist and, from 1625, Catholic again .

Christianity

Parish of St. Nicholas (Catholic)

Around the year 1000 Penting was Christianized by the mission parish Chammünster and the parish Roding . At that time, Penting belonged to the Archdeanate of Cham . In 1140, Bishop Egilbert consecrated a church in Penting that was still made of wood. The first stone church in Penting dates from the year 1300. Chunradus zu Pönting appeared as the first clergy mentioned in a document in 1358.

After the Reformation by Martin Luther, Pastor Chunrad Weissmann converted to the Lutheran profession in 1538. From 1625 a Catholic priest is documented again, who from Penting was also responsible for the places Fuhrn, Taxöldern, Hofenstetten and from 1632 also for Seebarn and Neukirchen-Balbini.

During the ecclesiastical territorial reform from 1865 to 1871, the parish Penting received its current size. It thus covers an area that, in addition to the city of Neunburg v. Wald also belongs to the communities of Bodenwöhr and Neukirchen-Balbini. Since 2013, the Penting parish has merged into a parish community with the Seebarn and Neukirchen-Balbini parishes . The parsonage in Penting was sold. The clergyman in charge now lives in the Neukirchen-Balbini rectory.

Buildings

Parish Church of St. Nicholas

In 1140, Bishop Egilbert consecrated the first chapel that was still made of wood. Since then, the patron is Saint Nicholas of Myra . Around 1250 a small late Romanesque choir tower church was built. Your chancel is preserved in today's church of St. Nicholas, which was built around 1700. It houses a group of Mounts of Olives . The older Romanesque church was oriented to the east and offset by 90 degrees on the axis compared to the church that is now oriented to the north. In 1842 the dilapidated church tower was removed and rebuilt in 1849. When the vaulted ceiling collapsed in 1888, it was rebuilt that same year.

Frescoes in the nave: Nicholas donates the blessing , Nicholas as intercessor of all classes and victor over the devil , Nicholas donates the dowry to three girls , Nicholas gives bread to the hungry , Nicholas rescues someone who has been innocently sentenced to death and Nicholas rescues castaways . Fresco in the choir: Nicholas donates the blessing . The frescoes were created by Josef Wittmann in 1920 .

In 2017, the parish church received a new roof structure, a new roof and a new exterior painting as part of a renovation.

Awards

As part of the nationwide village competition “Our village has a future”, Penting was awarded the gold medal at the district level in 2016 together with Obermurach . The jury emphasized that Penting is proving to be a village with committed residents and a great deal of volunteer work. Numerous events are organized and hosted by the Pentings associations. In particular, the integration of new residents into village life was highlighted positively in the award. The fact that this development has so far taken place without targeted village renewal was also rewarded. The new building of a four-sided courtyard in the historic Upper Palatinate architectural style was included in the 2017 architectural tours of the Bavarian Chamber of Architects . Penting has thus qualified to compete in the Upper Palatinate district decision in 2017, in which a silver medal was achieved.

railroad

From 1896 the railway connected the newly built Penting station with Bodenwöhr Nord and Neunburg vorm Wald . From 1915 the railway line was extended to Rötz . On December 13, 1969, passenger traffic on the railway was stopped. Penting station was no longer used and was sold. Freight traffic on the branch line was also discontinued in 1994 and the railway line expanded as a cycle path.

Long-distance cycle paths

Several cycle routes of regional and national importance run along the route of the former Bodenwöhr – Rötz railway line , which passes the former Penting station in the Wutzelskühn district near Penting. Penting is connected to Wutzelskühn via an asphalt footpath and cycle path and can therefore also be easily reached from the railway cycle paths. As a result, Penting has become a popular destination and overnight stay for many bicycle tourists.

power supply

Since autumn 2016, a Nordex N117 / 2400 wind turbine from Bürgerwindenergie Neunburg vorm Wald has been supplying households in the municipality with around 5,822,000 kWh of green electricity per year (forecast). The wind turbine with a hub height of 141 meters, a total height of around 200 meters and a nominal output of 2.4 megawatts was built approx. 800 m southeast of Penting in a forest area. The financing took place through the establishment of a community wind energy company, through which a direct participation of citizens in the yield was possible. In contrast to neighboring wind energy projects, the construction of the wind turbine in Penting did not provoke any resistance. One of the reasons for this is the final prevention of a planned quarry on the outskirts by the wind turbine. The construction of the Penting wind turbine became known throughout Bavaria, as it was probably one of the last community wind turbines to be implemented in Bavaria after the so-called 10-H regulation came into force.
