Elijah Pfister

Elijah Conner Phister (born October 8, 1822 in Maysville , Kentucky , †  May 16, 1887 ibid) was an American politician . Between 1879 and 1883 he represented the state of Kentucky in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Elijah Phister attended the Seminary of Rand and Richardson in his hometown of Maysville. He then studied at Augusta College until 1840. After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1844, he began to practice this profession. In 1848 he became mayor of his hometown Maysville. Between 1856 and 1862, Phister served as a district judge.

Politically, he was a member of the Democratic Party . Between 1867 and 1871 he was a member of the Kentucky House of Representatives . In 1872 he turned down an offer to participate in a commission to revise state legislation. In the congressional elections of 1878 Phister was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the tenth constituency of Kentucky , where he succeeded John Blades Clarke on March 4, 1879 . After re-election in 1880, he was able to complete two terms in Congress until March 3, 1883 .

After leaving the US House of Representatives, Elijah Phister returned to work as a lawyer. He died on May 16, 1887 in his native Maysville.
