José Rui Lopes Águas (born April 28, 1960 in Lisbon ) is a former Portuguese football player and coach .

Career

society

Águas initially played for the local clubs Sesimbra and Atlético CP . However, his professional career began in 1983 when he signed with the Portuguese first division club Portimonense SC .

In 1985, Águas moved to Benfica Lisbon , where he played for three years. In the first year he won the Portuguese Supercup with the club . In the next season he won the Portuguese Cup with Benfica and reached the Supercup final, which however was lost after two legs (1-1, 2-4). In the 1986/87 season Águas was able to win the Supercup again and also the double from the championship and the national cup. In his senior year at Benfica, he reached the UEFA Champions League final, which they lost on penalties to PSV Eindhoven .

After two years at FC Porto , where he also reached the Supercup final in 1988 and won the championship in 1990, he moved back to Benfica Lisbon for four years. There he was able to win the championship again in 1991 and 1994, the Supercup in 1991 and 1993 and the national cup in 1993.

At the age of 34, Águas moved to CF Estrela Amadora in 1994 , before surprisingly ending his career with the Italian club AC Reggiana , which was also his only foreign club of his career.

National team

Águas ran on April 3, 1985 in the friendly against Italy for the first time for the Portuguese national football team . In total, he ran 31 times for Portugal and scored 10 goals.

Trainer

In the 1999/2000 season Águas was coach of Vitória Setúbal , which he won six games, lost nine and drew three times. As a result, the club relegated to the second-rate Liga de Honra .
