- Rabat / Morocco : The parliamentary elections are won by the Conservative Party of Independence with top candidate Abbas al-Fassi . The Islamist Party for Justice and Development ranks second in favor of the voters .
- Warsaw / Poland : After the failure of the governing coalition of Jarosław Kaczyński , the Polish Parliament ( Sejm ) resolves to dissolve itself. The new elections are scheduled for October 21 .

- Middle East : Al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden publishes a video message criticizing the Iraq war . It is the first Al Qaeda video in three years, but it does not threaten an attack.

- Vienna / Austria : In the morning, the Cobra commando arrested three members of the Global Islamic Media Front (GIMF), including the head of the organization. According to Interior Minister Günther Platter , there was no risk of an attack in Austria. The GIMF maintains links with al-Qaeda .

- Athens / Greece : In the parliamentary elections in Greece there are signs of a majority for the ruling Conservative Prime Minister Konstandinos Karamanlis of the Nea Dimokratia party .
- Berlin / Germany : In an interview with the website Focus Online , the Federal Minister of Defense Franz Josef Jung said that in an emergency he would shoot down a hijacked passenger plane to protect the citizens. Jung is aware of the fact that the pilots would act against criminal law if the order was carried out. The Federal Constitutional Court declared the shooting down of passenger aircraft generally unconstitutional.
- Los Angeles / United States : At the 59th Emmy TV award ceremony , u. a. David Chase excellent.
- Phuket / Thailand : A McDonnell Douglas MD-82 from One-Two-GO speeds over the runway into a forest in heavy rain during the landing of flight OG269 at Phuket Airport. At least 89 of the 123 passengers die, including a German.
