Coat of arms of the Counts of Hanau

The tribe list of the Lords and Counts of Hanau contains the members of the von Hanau family, a family that ruled from the 13th century to 1736 in the rule and (since 1429) County of Hanau and its sub-counties of Hanau-Münzenberg and Hanau-Lichtenberg .

The extinct Counts of Hanau should not be confused with the princes of Hanau-Hořovice, who were founded by the morganatic descendants of Friedrich Wilhelm I of Hessen-Kassel and still exist today .

Beginnings

Around 1166/68 new leading names appear under the Lords of Hanau, especially Reinhard and Ulrich. Members of this noble family initially name themselves after their ancestral castle, Dorfelden , but also use the name “Lords of Dorfelden-Hagenowe (Hanau)” and from 1191 onwards they finally name themselves after the castle Hanau . The relationship between these and the oldest, genealogically certain, with the family of those Lords of Hanau, Reinhard I. , who are to be connected by Hanau , has not been fully clarified.
