Washington County is a county in the state of Virginia in the United States . In 2000 , the county had 51,103 residents and a population density of 35 people per square kilometer. The county seat is Abingdon . The county is part of the dry counties , which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.

Washington County is located in southwest Virginia, borders Tennessee to the south and has an area of 1,466 square kilometers, of which eight square kilometers are water. The county is divided into seven counties: Harrison, Jefferson, Madison, Monroe, Taylor, Tyler, and Wilson. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Smyth County , Grayson County , Scott County, and Russell Counties .
history
It was formed in 1776 from parts of Fincastle County. It was named after President George Washington . The county later became one of the largest whiskey producers in the United States.

Washington County had a population of 51,103 people as of the 2000 census . 1342 of these people lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 21,056 households and 14,949 families. The population density was 35 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 97.56 percent white, 1.32 percent African American, 0.11 percent Native American, 0.27 percent Asian, 0.03 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.14 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.58 percent were from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.63 percent of the population.
Of the 21,056 households, 28.1 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 59.1 percent were married couples living together, 8.7 percent were single mothers, 29.0 percent were non-families, 25.8 percent were single households and 10.4 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.36 and the average family size was 2.84 people.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 20.8 percent of residents under the age of 18, 8.7 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 28.3 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, and 26.9 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 15.3 percent were 65 years of age or over. The average age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 94.2 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were statistically 91.7 men.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 32,742 , and the median income for a family is $ 40,162. Males had a median income of $ 30,104 versus $ 21,307 for females. The per capita income was $ 18,350. 8.1 percent of families and 10.9 percent of the population were below the poverty line. These included 13.2 percent of children and adolescents under the age of 18 and 14.2 percent of the population aged 65 or over.
