The Austrian Football Championship 1977/78 was organized by the Austrian Football Association . The single-track 2nd division served as a substructure for the 1st division . The third level was the Regionalliga Ost (Vienna, Lower Austria, Burgenland), the Alpine League ( Salzburg , Tyrol ) and the regional leagues of Vorarlberg , Carinthia , Upper Austria and Styria .

First performance level - 1st division

General

The championship in the 1st division was contested with 10 teams, each of which met four times during the entire season. Wiener Austria was able to become Austrian football champions for the 12th time , the last title was won two years earlier, at that time still together with the Wiener AC as a game community. As an Austrian champion you could also qualify for the European Cup of National Champions 1979 , where the violets made it to the semi-finals. As cup winners, the syndicate between Wattens and Wacker Innsbruck was allowed to take part in the 1979 European Cup winners' cup , where the team reached the second round. Rapid and Sturm represented Austria's football in the 1979 UEFA Cup , but did not get past the first round.

The last place in the championship had to relegate with the Linz ASK. He was replaced with SV Austria Salzburg by the champions of the second-class 2nd division in the following season.

On April 22, Hans Krankl surpassed the previous season record of 37 goals by Robert Dienst from the 1950/51 season with his five goals in the penultimate round in a 6-0 win against Admira, which resulted in 41 championship goals . Krankl even won the Golden Shoe as the best European top scorer.

The championship had started on August 12th, the 36 rounds lasted until the beginning of May (almost all until May 2nd, only the big Vienna Derby Rapid against Austria (0-0) was due to the tight schedule of Austria with their participation in the final in the European Cup only played on May 6th). Due to the fact that the national team had qualified for the World Championships in Argentina, the original schedule had been abandoned, it was - extremely unusual for Austria in winter, and between January 14th (20th round) - played (the cup games were also affected by this measure). The ÖFB had promised the clubs compensation for this.

Second performance level - 2nd division

    General

The championship in the 2nd division was contested with 16 teams who met twice during the entire season. The champions of the 2nd division, SV Austria Salzburg, were promoted to the 1st division, and the last three were relegated. The SC Tulln had to go to the Regionalliga Ost, the ASK Salzburg had to relegate to the Alpine League and the ASV Stockerau in turn to the Regionalliga Ost. The promotion to the 2nd division was regulated more complicated, as there was an asymmetrical third performance level this season: The champion of the Regionalliga Ost, the FavAC, rose directly. The champions of the Alpine league also met the Vorarlberg regional champions in the qualifying games of the West group, while the regional champions of Carinthia, Styria and Upper Austria played off their promoted team, Wolfsberger AC, in the middle group.
