FC Bayern Munich became the first in the 1971/72 season of the German Bundesliga and thus German men's championship .
Season overview
championship
The 1971/72 season surprisingly developed into a duel between runner-up FC Bayern and Schalke 04 after defending champion Borussia Mönchengladbach had already lost points early in the season and could not reconnect. Nobody expected Schalke 04, who was sixth in 1970/71, before the start of the season. However, the coach Ivica Horvat , who was signed at the beginning of the season, took from his team - a mixture of old, like national defender Klaus Fichtel (27 = age on the last match day), the Dutch midfielder Heinz van Haaren (32) and the dribbling strong Reinhard "Stan" Libuda and the up-and-coming talents such as defender Rolf Rüssmann (21), the twins Erwin and Helmut Kremers (23) brought by Kickers Offenbach , the center forward Klaus Fischer (22), who should become the second best Bundesliga goal-getter, and goalkeeper Norbert Nigbur (24), who should have had an excellent season - bring out the best. Even a surprisingly high 7-0 defeat at Borussia Mönchengladbach on matchday 12 didn’t bring the team off-track. Before the last matchday of the first half of the season, Schalke was one point ahead of Bayern, who achieved their highest Bundesliga victory on matchday 16 with an 11: 1 against Borussia Dortmund. Schalke 04 advanced on matchday 17 with a 1-0 win in the Glückauf-Kampfbahn over Bayern with a late goal by van Haaren.
Bayern, who in March prevented Gerd Müller from migrating to the Spanish league, which has just reopened for foreigners, following a million-dollar offer from FC Barcelona , only suffered one more defeat in the second half of the season , namely at MSV Duisburg , where they were on the last match day of the previous season had lost the championship, and two more point losses. Schalke, on the other hand, suffered three defeats and two draws before the last matchday, which meant that Bayern were one point ahead. The final phase of the Bundesliga was interrupted for the European Championship finals between June 14 and June 18, 1972. The last game day was a novelty, as for the first time two teams with title chances faced each other; a kind of finale. This was also the first last day of the match, which took place on a Wednesday and not all games took place at the same time. All games took place at 3:30 p.m., only Bayern against Schalke kicked off at 8:00 p.m. to enable the first live television broadcast of a Bundesliga game, but only for participating third-party programs of the ARD , such as that of the Bavarian Broadcasting Corporation. It was also FC Bayern's first game in the new Munich Olympic Stadium built for the 1972 Olympic Games. Around 80,000 spectators made it possible for FC Bayern to earn millions for the first time in one game and it was also the highest income in a Bundesliga game to date. After about half an hour, Bayern's right defender, the Dane Johnny Hansen , made it 1-0. Ten minutes later, left defender Paul Breitner made it 2-0. Ten minutes after the break, Klaus Fischer reduced it again to 1: 2, and Willi Hoffmann, who was a talented man, increased it to 3: 1 in the 69th minute. In the 80th minute, Uli Hoeneß scored Bayern's hundredth goal of the season and in the final minute Franz Beckenbauer made it 5-1.
Bayern's 101 goals are still a record today. Gerd Müller set an unprecedented record with 40 goals, although he missed three penalties. FC Bayern Munich's point record (55:13 points, equivalent to 79 points according to the three-point rule) lasted for 40 years. This record was only broken by Borussia Dortmund (81 points, 56:12 according to the old two-point rule) in the 2011/12 season . Schalke 04 were with 52:16 points, the equivalent of 76 points according to the three-point rule, the best runner-up until the 2015/16 season , when Borussia Dortmund scored 78 points (54:14 according to the old two-point rule). According to the two-point rule, Werder Bremen had already set this record in 1982/83 , then behind HSV, albeit with a worse goal difference.
Further decisions and topics
Schalke won the cup final against 1. FC Kaiserslautern 5-0 on Sunday after the game in Munich in the Lower Saxony Stadium in Hanover , a record result that Schalke 04 equalized with a 5-0 final win over MSV Duisburg in 2011. Schalke was thus qualified for the European Cup Winners' Cup.
1. FC Kaiserslautern qualified as a cup finalist for the UEFA Cup , as did the ranks three to five in the Bundesliga, Borussia Mönchengladbach (this season eliminated from the championship cup after 7-1 in the rifle throwing game against Inter Milan), the 1. FC Cologne and Eintracht Frankfurt . Disappointing was SV Werder Bremen , which was strengthened by expensive purchases such as Herbert L Bäumen from the champions Borussia Mönchengladbach and Werner Weist and Willi Neuberger from Dortmund , who this season wore red and white striped jerseys and white pants in Bremen's city colors and earned the nickname million eleven : At the end there was eleventh place.
Otherwise, the season was overshadowed by discussions about the Bundesliga scandal that had become public during the previous summer break. Arminia Bielefeld was deprived of all points this season, but would have finished last anyway. Another effect of the scandal was the significantly lower attendance figures: the average attendance fell from 21,405 viewers per game to 18,730. Also relegated was Borussia Dortmund , whose team was seen as outdated and was weakened by the departure of some of the better players in recent years.
Mönchengladbach's Günter Netzer , who excelled in the national team, was footballer of the year .
The national player Horst Köppel , who switched from Mönchengladbach to VfB Stuttgart , caused a curiosity , who ran up with a toupee over his thinning hair and collected advertising money for it.
