North
Season course
For the championship there was a three-way battle between last year's defending champion Holstein Kiel, runner-up St. Pauli and Göttingen 05. The eleven from Millerntor were by far at the top of the table until the middle of the second half of the season. The young goalscorer Siegfried Bronnert, who came from TuS Celle, shot a clear lead over Göttingen and Kiel together with Horst Haecks. The championship title could not prevent even the clearly negative balance of the last eight games with 4:12 points. The defending champion from Kiel had strengthened themselves individually with Kröpelin (Hamburger SV), Skrotzki (VfR Neumünster) and Witt (Arminia Hannover), but before the last eight league games he already had 20 minus points and was able to score with the final sprint of 15: 1 Points, only tied for third place behind Göttingen. The team of coach Fritz Rebell , Göttingen 05, dragged the 0: 8 starting mortgage around with them until the end and was therefore satisfied with the runner-up championship. SV Friedrichsort and Victoria Hamburg slipped into the amateur league. Horst Haecks from St. Pauli took the top scorer's crown with 26 goals, followed by Dieter Meyer from Bergedorf (24 goals) and Siegfried Bronnert (also St. Pauli) with 23 goals.
Three players switched to the Bundesliga in 1966:
- Siegfried Bronnert (FC St. Pauli)
- Gerd Saborowski (Holstein Kiel)
- Jürgen Weidlandt (FC St. Pauli)

Season course
The forced relegation from the Bundesliga , Hertha BSC, won the Berlin championship with 58: 2 points ahead of last year's title holder, Tennis Borussia Berlin. At Spandauer SV there was on November 14, 1965 the only lap defeat for Hertha BSC. Spandau won the game after a 0-1 half-time deficit with 3-1 goals. At the start there was a 3-1 home win for Hertha on August 15, 1965 against SC Gatow and Tennis Borussia lost the first point in a 2-2 draw against SC Staaken. The preliminary round match took place on December 12, 1965 and brought Hertha 4-1 away win against the Violets in front of 13,500 spectators. On the last matchday, May 22, 1966, Hertha beat the runner-up Tennis-Borussia with 8-1 goals, although TeBe had defeated Spandauer SV 8-1 goals eight days earlier. Hertha - with strikers Michael Krampitz , Helmut Faeder , Kurt Schulz and Willibert Kremer - also ensured two more victories with the 9-0 win against Berliner SV 92 and 11-0 against Lichterfelder SU. The runner-up at Tennis Borussia Berlin did not qualify for participation in the promotion round to the Bundesliga. For the club as well as the outstanding players Georg Damjanoff , Bernd Gersdorff , Willi Kraus , Werner Lungwitz , Bernd Sobeck and Hans Tylinski that was regrettable.
The list of goalscorers was headed by Hans Tylinski from Tennis Borussia with 36 goals in front of the two Hertha BSC players Helmut Faeder with 32 and Kurt Schulz with 26 goals. Werner Lungwitz and Willi Kraus made it to the Bundesliga for the 1966/67 round. SC Tegel, SC Gatow and Viktoria 89 made their way to the amateur camp.

Last year's third in the table, Fortuna Düsseldorf, won the autumn championship with a score of 29: 3 points. Rot-Weiss Essen (25: 7) and Alemannia Aachen ranked with 23: 9 points. The championship of the team of coach Kuno Klötzer was safe at the end of the round. The top teams opened the round on August 15, 1965, each with success. Düsseldorf won the home game against Eintracht Gelsenkirchen 2-0 in Münster, Essen also defeated the guests of Eintracht Duisburg 3-0. The four successes of Fortuna in the direct duels against Essen and Aachen were decisive for the Düsseldorf championship win. The Klötzer team won the two top games in the preliminary round (in Aachen with 3: 0; at home against Essen 4: 1) as well as in the second half (at home against Aachen with 2: 0 and in Essen with 2: 1 goals) and won the championship by five points. Trainer Fritz Pliska also made it into the promotion round as runner-up with RWE. The top three were in a class of their own, followed by Rot-Weiß Oberhausen 14 points behind third in the table in fourth place. As relegated, the way from Bottrop and Horst-Emscher led back to the amateur camp. With the "Emscher Hussars" the lights went out after the first half of the season with just nine points. Bottrop - with the talents Fred-Werner Bockholt and Dieter Herzog - narrowly missed relegation. Coach Werner Stahl's team came in two points behind Leverkusen, Herne and Gelsenkirchen. On the last day of the match, Herne lost 9-1 at Preußen Münster - the young Erwin Kostedde excelled as a four-time goal scorer - Leverkusen lost the home game 5-1 to Aachen and Eintracht Gelsenkirchen lost 3-1 at Schwarz-Weiß Essen Gates. Only Bottrop got both points with a 2-0 home win against Bielefeld, but they couldn't do anything in the table.
The top scorer list was led by Alfred Glenski (Aachen) with 26 goals, ahead of Heinz-Dieter Hasebrink (RWE) with 18 goals and Peter Meyer (Düsseldorf) with 17 goals.
For the round 1966/67 the following players switched to the Bundesliga:
- Günther Nasdalla (Viktoria Cologne)
- Bernd Becker (Eintracht Gelsenkirchen)
- Christian Breuer (Alemannia Aachen)
- Jürgen Schult (Viktoria Cologne)
- Jürgen Koch (Westfalia Herne)
- Fred-Werner Bockholt (VfB Bottrop)

In the end, the team of coach Kurt Sommerlatt , FK Pirmasens, prevailed with one point ahead of 1. FC Saarbrücken with coach Bernd Oles . Worms experienced a slump in the second half of the season and FSV Mainz 05 - in the first half of the season with 15:15 points in midfield - moved up to third place. The newly promoted SV Alsenborn came in ninth place with coach Otto Render and the outstanding player Lorenz Horr . Ludwigshafener SC, BSC Oppau and TSC Zweibrücken were relegated to the amateur league.

south
Season course
In the south, in the year following the rise of Bayern Munich, the 14th of the 1964/65 round, FC Schweinfurt 05 surprisingly pushed forward and fought a duel for the championship with Kickers Offenbach. After the first half of the season Offenbach still had one point ahead of Schweinfurt with 27: 7 points, which the Lower Franconians were able to convert into one point in the second half of the season and thus won the championship. In the direct duels of the top teams, the home team prevailed. On the final day, May 22, 1966, the two leading clubs were content with a 1-1 draw against Rüsselsheim (Schweinfurt) and the relegated VfR Pforzheim (Offenbach). With the new champions, coach Gunther Baumann was able to build on the best defense in the south (39 goals conceded), but also had dangerous strikers in his attack with Manfred Berz , Kurt Dachlauer , Günther Masurek , Manfred Rühr and Rolf Schweighöfer . In contrast, the team of coach Kurt Baluses , Kickers Offenbach, had narrow advantages in the offensive through striker Siegfried Gast , Gerd Becker , Georg Tripp and the still dangerous Hermann Nuber (78 goals). With Waldhof Mannheim ( Wolfgang Höfig , Rolf Lederer , Heinz Schmitt ), SpVgg Fürth ( Paul Derbfuß , Norbert Knopf , Klaus Slatina , Bernd Windhausen ), Stuttgarter Kickers ( Herbert Dienelt , Horst Haug , Rudi Kröner , Rolf Steeb ), Hessen Kassel ( Rolf Fritzsche , Ernst Kuster , Walter Liebich , Karl Loweg ) and 1. FC Pforzheim ( Siegfried Agurew , Friedemann Paulick , Dieter Volkmann ) were followed by five teams with a positive point balance. The Pforzheimer improved compared to the previous year from 13th place to seventh place and had 36:32 points in the final table. The 1965 runner-up, SSV Reutlingen ( Rolf Schafstall , Ernst Kreuz ), could not repeat the performance and did not get past eighth place. Of the three newcomers, Opel Rüsselsheim ( Karl-Heinz Kamp , Helmut Kleinböhl , Friedel Späth ) came out best in tenth, SpVgg Weiden ( Jürgen Glinka , Manfred Linz ) and VfR Pforzheim ( Gerhard Wanner , Manfred Schwalm ) had to go back to that Amateur camp back. The relegation battle was dramatic. On the last match day, May 22, 1966, Freiburg FC ( Werner Anzill , Gerd Klier ) lost their home game with 1: 2 goals against Darmstadt, Weiden also lost their home game with 2: 4 goals against Kassel and ESV Ingolstadt ( Peter Dietrich , Willibald Mikulasch , Wilhelm Zott ) separated after a 4: 2 lead from VfR Mannheim with a 4: 4 goal draw. That meant the same point descent of Ingolstadt against Freiburg due to the worse goal difference.
The top scorer list was headed by:
- Willibald Mikulasch (ESV Ingolstadt) 29 goals
- Wolfgang Breuer (Bayern Hof) 27 goals
- Norbert Knopf (SpVgg Fürth) 24 goals
- Werner Anzill (Freiburg FC) 22 goals
- Siegfried Gast (OFC) 21 goals
- Franz Schäffner (VfR Mannheim) 20 goals
For the round 1966/67 the following players switched to the Bundesliga :
- Willibald Mikulasch (ESV Ingolstadt)
- Rolf Schweighöfer (FC Schweinfurt 05)
- Horst Blechinger (TSV Schwaben Augsburg)
- Peter Dietrich (ESV Ingolstadt)
