Gençlerbirliği Ankara (German: youth association or youth union Ankara ) is a football club from the Turkish capital Ankara . The team plays in the Süper Lig , Turkey's top division. The club plays its home games at Eryaman Stadyumu , which is shared with local rivals MKE Ankaragücü . The club is known nationwide as a talent factory.

history

The association was founded on March 14, 1923. From 1977 to January 2017 İlhan Cavcav was president of the club, which made the club one of the top addresses in Turkey through good management . The club is known for its good talent scouting of young European and African players. From the 1990s to the mid-2000s, the club was mostly able to assert itself in the upper half of the league table; from the years 2007/08 followed rather weak seasonal performances, where the club barely escaped relegation, among other things, in the 2008/09 season . In 1987 and 2001 the team won the cup twice .

Gençlerbirliği defeated Galatasaray Istanbul in the round of 16 for the Turkish Cup of the 1996/97 season on penalties with a record-breaking result of 17:16. The game, including the penalty shoot-out, lasted about three hours. A similar high-scoring penalty shoot-out followed in 2008 when the club lost the Turkish Cup final to Kayserispor 10:11.

Internationally, the team caused a sensation in the 2003/04 season. After eliminating clubs favored in the UEFA Cup such as Sporting Lisbon , Blackburn Rovers and Parma FC , they reached the round of 16. There the club defeated FC Valencia (which won the UEFA Cup in the same season) 1-0 in the first leg , but were eliminated in the second leg 2-0 after extra time due to the silver goal .

In the 2015/16 season, Gençlerbirliği employed five coaches in the first half of the year.

After the end of the game between Gençlerbirliği and Galatasaray Istanbul, a car bomb attack occurred in downtown Ankara on March 13, 2016, not far from the football scene .

At the end of the 2017/18 season , Gençlerbirliği Ankara rose after 29 years of membership in the Süper Lig as penultimate. In the following 2018/19 season , however, he was immediately promoted to second place in the top football league in Turkey.
