Last year's individual winner, the Spaniard Rafael Nadal , was able to defend his title and celebrated his sixth tournament win this year. In the final, he clearly defeated the Swiss Roger Federer in two sets with 6: 1 and 6: 3. The field of participants in the single competition consisted of 56 players, that of the doubles competition consisted of 24 pairs. The eight top seeded players in singles or pairings in doubles each received a bye into the second round.
The qualification for the Internazionali BNL d'Italia 2013 took place on May 11th and 12th, 2013. From 28 participants, seven qualifying places were played, which entitle them to participate in the main draw of the tournament.
