The Danube and Alpine regions in the 4th century

In ancient times, the Danube formed the border of the Roman Empire . In the lowlands south of the Danube and in the Alpine region there were many Roman villages, military camps, forts and even larger municipalities , i.e. cities. Many of the Roman localities are known from the sources and some of today's cities and villages were built exactly on or near former Roman settlements. This article provides the most complete list of Roman towns in Austria , Switzerland , Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg sorted by provinces after the reform of Emperor Diocletian . The current city is given in brackets.
