In the 19th century the community usually had between 250 and 350 inhabitants. Despite the phylloxera crisis and the increasing mechanization of agriculture , the population has remained essentially constant. Due to the relative proximity to the city of Bordeaux and the significantly lower property prices in the country, there has been a slight increase in the population over the past few decades.
economy
For centuries, Saint-Martin-d'Ary lived from agriculture, which also included viticulture. Today, the agriculturally used areas formally belong to the Bons Bois of the Cognac wine-growing region , but because of the sales crisis for wine and brandy, only a manageable amount of wine is grown in the municipality. In contrast, tourism in the form of renting holiday apartments ( gîtes ) has increased in importance since the 1970s.

- The former priory church of Saint-Martin is a small, single-nave Romanesque building from the 12th century and has probably always served as a parish church for the residents of the village. The facade, designed in the style of Saintonge, shows an elevation typical of the region: the portal zone shows a triumphal arch scheme ; above it is a row of three blind arcades on each side and a central arcade with windows. Below the renewed gable there is a - formerly figurative - console frieze . The outer walls of the nave are stabilized by buttresses , but otherwise not structured; the windows are extremely slim. The apse , on the other hand, shows an impressive all-round blind arcade structure and a console frieze below the eaves . The church building has been recognized as a Monument Historique since 1925 .
- There are two handsome mansions (in the municipality manors ) - both act today as wineries: the Château de la Magdeleine and the Château du Taillan (photos see websites).
