The municipality of San Canzian d'Isonzo is located in northeast Italy in the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region . It is located on the Isonzo River and has 6169 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) on an area of ​​33 km². The municipality is located about 30 kilometers from Gorizia (German: Gorizia) and west of Trieste .

In addition to the main town of San Canzian d'Isonzo, the municipality includes three other localities and hamlets (Frazioni): Begliano, Isola Morosini and Pieris. The neighboring municipalities are Fiumicello Villa Vicentina , Grado , Ronchi dei Legionari , San Pier d'Isonzo , Staranzano and Turriaco .

history

The name of the community and the three crosses in its coat of arms refer to the three martyr siblings Cantius, Cantianus and Cantianilla who, according to tradition, suffered martyrdom and were buried here.

The municipality was part of the county of Gorizia and Gradisca until the end of the First World War , where it was subordinate to the judicial district of Monfalcone , which in turn was part of the district of Monfalcone .
