Stefan is a male given name , more rarely a family name , a variant of Stephan . The feminine form of the name is Stefanie .
Origin and meaning
The ancient Greek word Στέφανος (Stéphanos) originally meant “wreath” or “crown” or “the crowned one” or “the crowned one”.
With the later name-bearers, however, a reference to one of the saints of that name can almost always be assumed. The best known of these is the first martyr of the Christian faith , Stephen (after Acts 6 EU and Ac 7 EU ).

At the beginning of the 20th century, Stefan wasn't a very popular name in Germany. From the mid-1940s the name was given more and more. Between 1960 and 1985 he was consistently among the ten most frequent boy names, in 1970 even at number one in the frequency statistics. Since the mid-1990s, its popularity has declined sharply.
