The Adam (pronunciation used by the manufacturer: [ ˈædəm ]) is a small car made by the automobile manufacturer Opel . In the UK it is offered as the Vauxhall Adam.

The car was presented to the public on September 22, 2012 to celebrate the company's 150th anniversary. Production of the demonstration cars began at the end of November 2012, while regular series production started on January 10, 2013. The official start of sales was January 19, 2013. The vehicle is named after the company's founder Adam Opel .

The Adam was assembled in the Opel factory in Eisenach , in which 190 million euros were invested.

In autumn 2018 it was announced that the Adam, along with Opel Karl and Opel Cascada , will be discontinued by the end of 2019 at the latest. The cost-intensive production is supposed to be a reason for Adam. Because of the lower sales figures compared to its brother Corsa , it should not have a successor.

On May 3, 2019, the last Adam rolled off the production line, as did his brother Corsa. It was assumed that warehouse vehicles would be available by the end of 2019.

history

The Opel Adam is based on the shortened GM SCCS platform , which is used in the 3rd generation Corsa D and Fiat Punto (Type 199) , among others ; the Adam is only made with two doors. When it was presented in March 2013 at the Geneva Motor Show , the Adam Rocks with a folding roof was also presented.

The small car is “characterized by design and personalization” (Opel) and should therefore set itself apart from other models of the brand. The nameplate was therefore not placed at the rear, but on the C-pillars . The roof can be ordered in a different color.

The headliner is available in various decors, for example literally as a sky (Sky) , in a checkerboard pattern (Go) or with a starry sky created by 63 light-emitting diodes (Stars) , the latter until 2018. The dashboard is - similar to the Fiat 500 - made of different materials to match the exterior color; this concept continues up to the cap of the radio remote control.

Interfaces to current smartphones are integrated as standard and uploaded to the on-board computer. From the beginning, one is voice control available.

At times over 90,000 variants were possible with the Adam. After the takeover of Opel by PSA in 2017, equipment that was selected by less than 1% of customers was removed from the range to limit costs.

Even if the Adam was not free from recalls with six recalls up to the beginning of September 2017, it is otherwise successful in terms of quality: According to the TÜV report 2017, over 94% of the vehicles of this type are free of defects after three years, which means that the Adam here is its competitor Mini has overtaken.

Equipment lines

The Adam started with the equipment variants Adam , Jam , Glam and Slam .

  • Adam: basic version

The standard equipment of the Adam has a radio, electric windows and exterior mirrors, daytime running lights , ABS , ESP , rear seats that can be folded down in parts, central locking , chrome decor in the interior and power steering with the so-called city mode, in which the power steering assistance is significantly greater.

The panoramic glass roof is a chargeable option. In 2014, the Adam S with the 110 kW (150 PS) 1.4-liter turbo engine, more powerful brakes (front from the Corsa OPC) and rear roof spoiler was added to it.

In autumn 2018, the slam can no longer be found in the configurator.

The Rocks S with the 110 kW (150 hp) 1.4-liter turbo engine and rear roof spoiler was also available since 2017 .

In addition, equipment called Extreme is offered, with decorative elements for interior and exterior mirrors, for example, as well as grill clasp, and in some cases also for the wheels and interior.

The following equipment versions were another variant:

  • Black : with black roof, black rims and black exterior mirrors
