history

Surname

The oldest place name, documented in 868, is "Sciffestad". 977 (or 987) you can find “Skeferstat”, 1035 “Sciferstat”. The syllable "scif", also "scef" in Old High German, means ship . There are several interpretations of the place name:

  • Georg Heeger: “Schifferstadt owes its origin to the rafting on the Rehbach. The oldest name "Sciffestad" means raft bank. "
  • Karl Christ: "The old name of Schifferstadt already means raft bank or site of the raftsmen, who were called Schiffer."

Henning Kaufmann (Palatinate place names, Munich 1971) and Martin Dolch / Albrecht Greule (Historisches Siedlungsnamesbuch der Pfalz, Speyer 1991) assume a personal name * Skiheri (short form * Skiffo), which is the basis for forming the place name with the basic word -statt because on the one hand the word "Schiffer" only got into Middle High German in the Middle Low German form "schipper, schepper" and on the other hand, Palatine place names on -statt, -stadt were almost always formed with a personal name.

Prehistoric time

A pierced stone tool, two stone axes, a stone chisel and a flint knife are noted as stone age finds on the Schifferstadt district .

The famous Bronze Age " Golden Hat " was found on April 29, 1835 in the Reuschlache tub by the farmer Josef Eckrich. He delivered the find to the authorities and received 570 guilders. 450 were considered the purchase price, 120 as a reward from King Ludwig I for his willingness to cede the find to the State Collection.

First mention

Schifferstadt was created through the construction of a Franconian royal court. Ludwig the German first mentioned the place Sciffestad in a document dated May 25, 868, in which he sealed an exchange of goods between Bishop Gebhard I. von Speyer and a Count Christian.

Klein-Schifferstadt

For a long time, the communities of Klein-Schifferstadt (today's Langgasse in the north-west of the town) and Groß-Schifferstadt existed side by side , although their names were not differentiated until the 14th century . In 1035 Emperor Konrad II gave Groß-Schifferstadt as a fief to the Limburg monastery , while Klein-Schifferstadt remained in the possession of the Salians . In 1065 Schifferstadt and Limburg Abbey were handed over to the Speyer Monastery by Emperor Heinrich IV , who owned it until 1797. Klein-Schifferstadt, on the other hand, was pledged in 1331 as part of the Landvogtei Speyergau to the Palatinate County near the Rhine (later Electoral Palatinate ), in whose possession it remained until 1708. Nevertheless, the Limburg monastery retained rulership rights in Klein-Schifferstadt, which continued even after the Limburg Abbey was abolished and the Calvinist faith was introduced in 1574 by the Limburg monastery conductor. In 1708 the Electoral Palatinate ceded all rights to Klein-Schifferstadt to the Hochstift Speyer, which combined large and small Schifferstadt.

Klein-Schifferstadt is now colloquially known as "Dörfel".

Since the French Revolution

Schifferstadt was annexed to the French Republic in 1797 during the French occupation and then came under Bavarian administration. In 1817 Schifferstadt received the right to self-government, belonged to Bavaria until 1946 , then to the district of Speyer in the newly created state of Rhineland-Palatinate .

On January 1, 1930, Schifferstadt ceded parts of the area to form the new Limburgerhof community .

On October 1, 1950, Schifferstadt received city rights . On June 7, 1969, the Speyer district was dissolved and added to the Ludwigshafen district, now the Rhein-Pfalz-Kreis .

Kohlhof

From 1816 to the end of 1929 the Kohlhof belonged to Schifferstadt, a settlement of Mennonite farmers about one kilometer east of Schifferstadt that still exists today. In 1930 the Kohlhof was added to the newly founded Limburgerhof community.

The proportion of foreigners was 13.8% at the end of 2015 (1987: 13.4%, 2012 12.1%).
