The Alstom Coradia LINT is a family of transport - diesel railcars . The acronym "lint" stands for " l judges i NNOVATIVE N ahverkehrs t railcars". The LINT was designed by Linke-Hofmann-Busch (LHB) and will be distributed within the Alstom Coradia product family following the takeover of LHB by Alstom .

The variant iLINT is with hydrogen - fuel cell powered railcars.

Technical characteristics

The LINT railcars are made of steel. In the LINT 27 and 41 is per car body , a motor bogie of a diesel-mechanical drive system with horizontally installed MTU -Reihen- six-cylinder - diesel engine via a cardan shaft driven. With the LINT 54 and 81, a further motor bogie with an additional drive system can be installed in an end car.

Up to four units can be coupled to a train via automatic central buffer couplings.

Compressed air-actuated disc brakes are used as brakes, and there are additional magnetic rail brakes on each of the motor bogies . Spring-loaded accumulators are available as a parking brake. Braking systems from Mannesmann-Rexroth Pneumatik were used in older vehicles, and braking equipment from Knorr-Bremse was later used . The vehicles for DB Regio, Erixx and Taunusbahn also use retarders as a hydrodynamic supplementary brake. The Erixx and Taunusbahn vehicles also have diesel particulate filters .

The passenger information system can also announce the position of the platform at the next stop for some of the vehicles. The announcement “Next stop:…” is supplemented with “Exit in the direction of travel left / right” . This makes it easier for blind or visually impaired people to get out. In addition, “Exit left / right” is displayed inside . The page announcement is usually controlled manually by pressing a button.

The vehicles have independent cab air conditioning systems and passenger compartment air conditioning systems. There are two rooftop air conditioners per car body. The waste heat from the diesel engines is used to heat the passenger compartments and driver's cabs. If the waste heat is insufficient, diesel-fired auxiliary heaters are switched on. The heating, ventilation and air conditioning system is supplied by "Spheros" (formerly Webasto ).

The control cabinets in the driver's cab are produced as a special solution by Rittal and equipped by Alstom.

Types

The type designation indicates the approximate length in meters with an appended number. The one-piece type with a length of 27.26 m, listed in the German vehicle registration register as series 0640 , is called LINT 27 . At Deutsche Bahn AG it is run as the 640 series. Vehicles whose entrances are optimized for a platform height of 76 cm above the top edge of the rail contain an additional H at the end of the designation.

The two-part type with a length of 41.89 m and a length of 41.89 m, which is listed as series 0648 with a Jakobs bogie, is called LINT 41 . At Deutsche Bahn AG it is run as the 648 series.

Other configurations with car bodies on end bogies, two-part LINT 54 (622 series) and three-part LINT 81 (620 series), are also offered.

The one-piece railcars have an output of 315  kilowatts and a top speed of 120 km / h. A special feature is the diesel-hydraulic power transmission in the LINT 27 of the DB Regio, while a diesel-mechanical automatic transmission was installed in all the other successor series.

One vehicle offers 52 seats in 2nd  class , eight seats in 1st class and 13 folding seats in the multi-purpose compartment . If the folding seats are not in use, 85 people have standing space, and 71 if the folding seats are occupied.

Vehicle use

The vehicles were mainly used on non-electrified branch lines in North Rhine-Westphalia by the DB Regio NRW before the services were taken over by HLB for the timetable change in December 2014. They were on the Finnentrop  - Olpe ( Biggetalbahn ), Siegen  - Bad Berleburg ( Rothaarbahn ) and Dillenburg  - Au (Sieg) routes . In addition, five of these railcars were used by DB Regio Südost in the Leipzig area from 2006 to the 2008 timetable change.

At the end of 2004 , vectus was the first non-federally owned railway to order ten LINT 27. These vehicles ran in all traction variants on the Ländchesbahn between Niedernhausen and Wiesbaden and Limburg – Koblenz ( Lahntalbahn ). Other areas of application were Limburg - Montabaur  - Siershahn ( Unterwesterwaldbahn ) and Limburg - Westerburg  - Hachenburg  - Altenkirchen  - Au (Sieg) ( Oberwesterwaldbahn ). After the transport services were re-allocated, the railcars became the property of the parent company, Hessische Landesbahn , in order to run in the Eifel-Westerwald-Sieg network after a design adjustment at Alstom in Braunschweig.

The Transdev Sachsen-Anhalt has been using the trains since 2005 for the HEX (Harz-Elbe-Express) on the Halberstadt  - Blankenburg (Harz) and Könnern  - Bernburg (Saale) routes and as an amplifier car. The vehicles are operated by Transdev GmbH and serviced by VIS Verkehrs Industrie Systeme GmbH Halberstadt. From December 2018 these will be taken over by the Hanseatic Railway for regional rail traffic on the Stendal – Rathenow and Stendal – Tangermünde routes.

The LINT 27 is being used in a new way on the Upper Ruhr Valley Railway (KBS 435). Since the end of April 2008, the vehicles have been used as bicycle trolleys to reinforce the two-part LINT 41. The enormous popularity of the Ruhr Valley Cycle Path from Winterberg to Duisburg made it necessary to convert and use the vehicles, with the interior seating largely being replaced by parking spaces for bicycles.

Since 2017, ten more units have been added to the Harz-Weser network of DB Regio, on the one hand as a replacement for the last emergency multiple units of the 628 series and on the other hand in regular operation: On the Ilmebahn since December 2018 between Einbeck- Mitte and Salzderhelden , where The feeder function for the metronome has so far been taken over by buses with three times longer travel times; between Braunschweig Hbf and Salzgitter-Lebenstedt , which has been running every half hour since December 2017; and for amplifier services on the electrified Braunschweig – Helmstedt line . A vehicle was christened on August 20, 2017 in Hardegsen station.

From December 2019 four of these will be used on the Südostbayernbahn on the Traunstein – Traunreut / Mühldorf railway line .

Based on the LINT 54, Alstom and the German Aerospace Center in Salzgitter and Tarbes have developed the iLint (project name “Bethy”), a multiple unit with a hydrogen drive . The hydrogen - together with oxygen from the ambient air - is converted by fuel cells into electrical energy, which drives electric motors. The hydrogen storage tanks are two 90 kilogram tanks that are housed on the roof. The fuel cells with two times 200 kW output come from Canadian production. The drive provides a starting tractive effort of 87 kN and an output of 544 kW. For the rest of the drive technology, installation spaces are used in which drive components are also installed in the current diesel version. Lithium-ion batteries with a capacity of 110 kWh and manufactured by Akasol are located under the passenger compartment as energy storage devices . These buffer the electrical energy generated by the fuel cells and can also store braking energy so that it can be used again when accelerating. The range should be fully refueled at 600 to 1000 kilometers, the top speed at 140 km / h. The train offers 150 seats and 150 standing places.

At Innotrans 2014, the state of Lower Saxony, the Rhein-Ruhr transport association, the Baden-Württemberg state and the Rhein-Main transport association signed a letter of intent with ALSTOM for the procurement of 48 hydrogen multiple units. This should promote the development of such a vehicle model. The first test drives were completed on March 14, 2017.

From spring 2018, two copies should go into trial operation for the Lower Saxony regional transport company on lines of the railways and transport companies Elbe-Weser (EVB), a total of 14 copies are to be purchased here. On July 11, 2018, the iLint received approval for commercial passenger use in Germany. This began on September 17, 2018 at EVB on the Buxtehude – Bremerhaven – Cuxhaven route . This is the world's first use of a hydrogen-powered train in regular regular service. The railcar was built in Salzgitter. A system with a hydrogen filling station is to be built in the near future. Until it is completed, the required hydrogen will come from the Netherlands by tanker. The two quiet vehicles are now running in regular operation.

When the timetable changes in December 2022, 27 fuel cell trains are to replace the previous diesel vehicles on four lines in the Taunus. The necessary hydrogen is to be taken from the Höchst Industrial Park , where it is produced as a process product. For Alstom it is one of the most important recent orders. The customer is the Rhein-Main-Verkehrsverbund in the Main-Taunus-Kreis . The final buyer will be the RMV subsidiary "Vehicle Management Region Frankfurt RheinMain", Fahma. This is the second order for Alstom, after the one from Lower Saxony.

In the first half of 2018, the Verkehrsverbund Rhein-Ruhr (VRR) announced that it would withdraw from the declaration of intent signed in 2014 to purchase 14 hydrogen vehicles. The procurement and maintenance of the vehicles has been put out to tender for the operation of the Emscher-Münsterland network between Essen, Borken and Coesfeld. In the invitation to tender, ALSTOM could not keep the assurance that the vehicles with federal funding could be made available on the same terms as for equivalent diesel multiple units. The tender for the provision of vehicles is now to be repeated with additional lines at a later date. In this round, the drive form should be open to technology but as low as possible in emissions.

In February 2019, as part of the h 2 -Well project, a test drive took place on the Rottenbach – Katzhütte route in Thuringia. This was part of a feasibility study on climate-neutral rail operations that is planned for this route for the 2021 timetable change.

Awards

For the development of the iLint equipped with hydrogen drive, Alstom Transport Germany was awarded the innovation prize of Privatbahn Magazin in 2016/2017 .

Criticism and problems

On the routes in the Cologne diesel network, the longer door opening times as well as the narrower rows of seats and the small number of doors compared to the length of the train triggered criticism from passengers. Since the timetable change on December 15, 2014, there have been considerable delays on various routes.

In February 2010, the Schleswig-Holstein regional railway announced that the reliability of the new LINT did not yet meet the requirements due to technical problems. In particular, there was damage to the turbochargers, these were checked and replaced if necessary. Almost three years later, in December 2012, the state-wide traffic service company Schleswig-Holstein reported in its customer magazine nah.sh :

“However, the operational quality has been negatively affected by the fact that the Schleswig-Holstein regional railway has been using old vehicles of the VT 628 series as planned since the end of June due to ongoing problems with its class VT 648 diesel multiple units. [...] "

In December 2015, the private railway company erixx announced that it would be distributing blankets to passengers in LINT on the routes Bremen - Soltau - Uelzen and Buchholz - Soltau - Hanover:

"'There is a design flaw in the air conditioning that makes the window seats cool and drafty' [...] According to the manufacturer Alstom Salzgitter, this fault can no longer be rectified."

On January 18, 2015 and April 25, 2015 there was a fire on one drive unit (“Powerpack”) of a LINT 41 of the Nordwestbahn. The cause was a leakage line that was damaged or loosened from its attachment in connection with the construction of the fuel return: The fuel feed pump has a constant output, which is why fuel that is not required is returned from the injection pump to the fuel tank via a return line. In addition, there is excess fuel during the injection , which is routed from the engine into the return line via a diesel leakage line . Due to the pressure in the return line, diesel fuel could escape from it via the defect in the leakage line. As a result of this larger amount, after the volatilization, a mixture formed on the exhaust pipe and turbocharger that could ignite at the high temperature there. Similar vehicle fires occurred as early as 2008, which is now also assumed to be the cause.
