The first World Cup tournament in Germany ended with a big surprise: Frenchman Egidio Vierat, who had never made a big appearance before, won the World Cup tournament. In a very close final, Vierat defeated the almost overwhelming Belgian Raymond Ceulemans with 15:14 in the fifth set. Also very surprisingly, third place went to the Argentinian Luis Mario Doyharzabal. This showed a very good performance over the entire tournament and in the end had the best general average (GD) of all sixteen participants with 1.250.
The tournament did not go well for the five German participants. All were eliminated in the first round, i.e. the round of 16. The German top player Dieter Müller played like in Brussels in the first round against Mario Doyharzabal and lost again in five sets with 2: 3. Since all the others had to play against seeded players, their elimination was not surprising.
Among the spectators at the World Cup tournament in Berlin were the President of the Berlin Sports Association Manfred von Richthofen and the well-known Israeli writer Ephraim Kishon . In his private life, Kishom was also an avid carom billiards player and had his own billiards room at home.
The tournament was played with 16 participants. The whole tournament was played in the knockout system with three sets of 15 points each.
The first four of the world rankings (in this case Nobuaki Kobayashi, Raymond Ceulemans, Rini van Bracht and Ludo Dielis) were seeded for the round of 16.
If a set was completed by player one at 15 points, player two had no follow-up kick.

The three-cushion World Cup was organized by the founding association, the " Billiards Worldcup Association " (BWA) until 1998 . Disputes between the BWA and the world association Union Mondiale de Billard (UMB) led to parallel tournaments between 1994 and 1997. The UMB / BWA organized the tournament together until the beginning of 1999. Since the dissolution of the BWA in 1999, the UMB has been the sole organizer. From 1988-1991 the UMB did not host any world championships. During this time, the annual overall winner of the World Cup was crowned world champion.
