Dustin Brown (born December 8, 1984 in Celle ) is a German tennis player who played for Jamaica until 2010 .

life and career

Until 2003: Career and ATP debut

Dustin Brown was born to a Jamaican father and a German mother and grew up in Winsen an der Aller . When he was eleven he moved to Montego Bay , Jamaica. There he began playing tournaments on the ITF Future Tour in 2002, and as a result rose to the top 600 in the world rankings. In April 2003, Brown competed for Jamaica in the Davis Cup . He helped his country to rise to Group II with four singles and three double victories. This should be his last matches in the Davis Cup so far, as there was a dispute with the Jamaican Tennis Association. In July 2003 he qualified in Newport for the first time for a tournament on the ATP Tour , but lost in the first round to Bob Bryan .

2004–2009: With the mobile home to the first Challenger title

At the end of 2003, Brown returned to Germany after graduating from college and from then on played future tournaments in Europe. He traveled from tournament to tournament in a motorhome given by his parents. In 2007 he won his first tournament in a future tournament, followed by another in 2008.

The year 2009 should be the most successful so far for Dustin Brown: After his third title in a future tournament in March 2009, he won his first Challenger title in Samarkand in August 2009 . In addition, he reached four more Challenger finals in Karlsruhe , Almaty , Eckental and Aachen during the year . At the end of the year he was ranked 144th in the world.

2010–2011: Entry into the Top 100, Grand Slam debut and first ATP title in doubles

Because of this placement, he was able to qualify for a Grand Slam tournament for the first time at the Australian Open in January 2010 , but failed in the second qualifying round to Guillaume Rufin . In February 2010 he played in Johannesburg for the second time in his career in the main round of an ATP Tour tournament. Here he succeeded after victories over the world number 53. Marco Chiudinelli and Laurent Recouderc made it to the quarterfinals, where he lost to the eventual finalist Stéphane Robert . Two months later, he also achieved his second triumph at a Challenger tournament in Johannesburg by beating Izak van der Merwe in the final , making him the top 100 in the world rankings for the first time in his career. In June 2010, Brown took part in the ATP tournament at Queen’s Club in London . There he defeated Frank Dancevic in the first round , but then lost to Denis Istomin . A week later he qualified in Eastbourne for the main round, but lost there to Henri Kontinen . He then took part in the Boodles Challenge preparatory tournament, where, after victories over Fernando Verdasco and Tommy Robredo, he could only be stopped in the final by Gaël Monfils . Due to his world ranking position, Brown was directly qualified at Wimbledon , but was defeated in his first Grand Slam match in four sets by Jürgen Melzer, who was 16 th . A week after Wimbledon, Brown played at the lawn tournament in Newport , and was able to reach the quarter-finals of an ATP tournament for the second time after winning over Björn Phau and the top seeded Sam Querrey , where he was eliminated against the Argentine Brian Dabul . At the ATP tournaments in Stuttgart and Gstaad , Brown lost after close matches in the first round, but reached the semi-finals in Gstaad together with George Bastl in doubles. At the Austrian Open in Kitzbühel, which is part of the Challenger Tour in 2010, Dustin Brown defeated the now 42-year-old former world number one Thomas Muster in the first round . In the second round he had to give up against Lukáš Rosol due to an eye injury , but won the fourth Challenger title in just under four months in doubles at Rogier Wassen's side . After he failed at the ATP tournament in New Haven after successful qualification in the first round by Jan Hájek , Brown was able to celebrate his first victory at a Grand Slam tournament in three tight sets against Rubén Ramírez Hidalgo in the first round of the US Open . In the second round he met fourth place in the world rankings Andy Murray , against whom he could keep up well in the first set, but ultimately lost clearly in three sets. In September 2010 Brown won his fifth double Challenger title of the season with Rogier Wassen in Szczecin . At the ATP tournament in Metz , Brown failed in the singles in the first round against the eventual winner Gilles Simon , but in doubles he was able to reach an ATP final for the first time together with Wassen. There they defeated the Brazilian pairing Marcelo Melo and Bruno Soares in straight sets, and Brown won his first ATP title. In October 2010 he reached the individual semi-finals at the Challenger tournaments in Mons and Tashkent . The next major success followed in doubles at the ATP tournament in Montpellier , where he just lost in the semifinals with Rogier Wassen. At the end of October 2010 Brown announced that he would play for Germany from now on. After another semifinal participation in Eckental , Brown reached the final in Aachen, as in the previous year , defeating Rajeev Ram , against whom he had lost the final last year , among others . In the final, he beat Igor Sijsling in two sets and won his second individual title this year. As a result, he achieved his best position in the world rankings to date with rank 92. At the end of the year, Brown won his sixth Challenger double title this year together with Martin Emmrich in Helsinki .

After a first round defeat at the season opener in Chennai , Dustin Brown met Albert Montañés, who was 25th in his Australian Open debut . After already trailing 2-0 sets, Brown fought his way into a fifth set, but eventually lost it to the favorite. In doubles he reached the second round together with Rogier Wassen . At the beginning of February 2011 Dustin Brown competed in the ATP tournament in Johannesburg, as in the previous year . There he prevailed in the first round against Florent Serra , who was fifth , but then surprisingly lost in three sets against Izak van der Merwe . At the following tournaments in San José , Delray Beach and Indian Wells , Brown was eliminated in the first round. After he lost again to Izak van der Merwe in the semi-finals of the Challenger tournament in Johannesburg and thus could not defend his title, Dustin Brown fell out of the top 100 again. For the ATP tournament in Munich , however, he received a wildcard and eliminated Stanislas Wawrinka, who was in second place, in three sets in the first round . Then he lost against the later semi-finalist Radek Štěpánek also just in three sets. The win against Wawrinka was Brown's last individual victory at ATP level for the time being: He lost in the first round both at the French Open and at the lawn tournaments in Halle and Newport . At Wimbledon , he even failed in the first qualifying round. Things went a little better in doubles: There he was able to reach the round of 16 at the French Open together with Michael Kohlmann , and he also reached the quarter-finals in several ATP tournaments with changing partners. In August 2011, Brown reached two Challenger quarter-finals in singles. In doubles he was able to win the first title of the season together with Lovro Zovko in Manerbio . Only two weeks later he won the second title in Genoa alongside Horacio Zeballos . In the last three months of the year Dustin Brown was eliminated from singles in six of eight Challenger tournaments in the first round and reached two quarter-finals. As a result, he fell back in the world rankings to 180th place. In doubles he was able to win another title together with Zovko in Ortisei in Val Gardena and ended the year in 67th place in the doubles world rankings.

2012–2013: Second ATP double title

The year 2012 began for Dustin Brown in singles with several first round defeats at Challenger and ATP qualification tournaments. In doubles, however, things went better: In February 2012 he reached the semifinals at the ATP tournament in Montpellier together with Lovro Zovko . Three weeks later he competed in Marseille with the top 10 player Jo-Wilfried Tsonga , with whom he was able to reach an ATP final for the second time in his career. There, however, they just lost in three sets against Nicolas Mahut and Édouard Roger-Vasselin . In March Brown was able to reach a Challenger semi-finals in the singles for the first time this year in Sarajevo , but there he lost to Jan Hernych . In doubles, on the other hand, he won the title together with Jonathan Marray after the two had narrowly lost two Challenger finals in the previous weeks. A week later, Brown moved into a Challenger semi-final in Bath by defeating the top 100 player Andreas Beck and was then able to reach the final. There he won in two sets against Jan Mertl and thus secured his fourth Challenger title in individual. In April 2012 Dustin Brown was eliminated from the singles qualification at the ATP tournament in Casablanca , but in doubles he was in the main draw with Paul Hanley . There the two, who had never played together in an official tournament before, first defeated the top seeded František Čermák and Filip Polášek and then marched through to the final, where they prevailed in two sets against Daniele Bracciali and Fabio Fognini and thus the title won. A month later, Brown managed to qualify at the ATP tournament in Munich and after a first round win over Daniel Brands , he just missed a surprise win in the round of 16 against Marcos Baghdatis , who was eighth . In doubles he reached the semi-finals alongside Alexander Waske .

On June 26, 2013 Dustin Brown moved to Wimbledon after defeating Lleyton Hewitt for the first time in his career in the third round of a Grand Slam tournament.

Since 2014

Dustin Brown during qualifying for Wimbledon in 2015

In Doha , a preparatory tournament for the Australian Open , Brown made it to the quarter-finals of the tournament at the beginning of the year after qualifying. There he was defeated by Peter Gojowczyk in three sets with 3: 6, 6: 3 and 6: 7 5 .

At the tournament in Halle he defeated the then world number one Rafael Nadal 6: 4 and 6: 1 in the round of 16 . Brown had a wildcard to thank for the start of this tournament . In Szczecin he won the Challenger tournament with a final victory against Jan-Lennard Struff.

At the Wimbledon Championships 2015 Dustin Brown defeated Nadal again in the second round, this time with 7: 5, 3: 6, 6: 4, 6: 4. As a result, he moved into the third round of Wimbledon for the second time. In round three he failed to Viktor Troicki 4: 6, 6: 7 3 , 6: 4, 3: 6.

In 2016 Brown won the Challenger tournament in Manchester on grass in Manchester . At the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Dustin Brown had to retire due to an ankle injury in the first round.

In 2019 he won the Challenger tournament in Sophia Antipolis . At the Mercedes Cup in Stuttgart he defeated the number one seeded Alexander Zverev after qualifying in the round of 16 . In the quarter-finals he failed after his own match point 6: 7 (3: 7), 7: 6 (7: 2), 6: 7 (3: 7) to Félix Auger-Aliassime .

Davis Cup

After a dispute with the Jamaican Tennis Association, Brown stopped playing for Jamaica in the Davis Cup . Since his grandmother is English, Brown expressed interest in June 2010 to want to compete in the Davis Cup for Great Britain. In October 2010, however, Brown took German citizenship and from then on went on tour under the German flag. In the 2015 season he made his debut for the German Davis Cup team .

particularities

On the court, Dustin Brown stands out for his dreadlocks , which have not been cut since 1996, and for his extroverted demeanor - this earned him descriptions in the press such as “bird of paradise” or “craziest tennis professional”. He is a serve and volley player and his favorite surface is turf. One of its strengths is its speed.

With 98th place in the world rankings , Dustin Brown was the best placed Jamaican tennis player of all time in July 2010. Richard Russell had previously been the best Jamaican: He had participated in several Grand Slam tournaments between 1968 and 1974 and reached number 140 in the world rankings in August 1973. Brown's best placement was 64th place (October 10, 2016), but at that time he was already playing for Germany, so this cannot be used for the best placement of a Jamaican player.
