Church history
The origins of the parish of Hetzerath go back to the 9th century. King Pippin gave the Prüm Abbey fishing rights on the Moselle between Mehring and Schweich in 752 and 10 years later, in 762, the manors of Mehring and Schweich including accessories.
The Goarspatrozinium has been possible for the church since the middle of the 9th century. This patronage clearly indicates the relationship to the Prüm monastery. The grave of St. Goar was donated to the Prüm Abbey in the 8th century by King Pippin, and in the years that followed, a close relationship between the Prüm Abbey and this church patron can be observed.
A branch church in Hetzerath in the Taxa Generalis, which was drawn up in the first half of the 14th century, was first mentioned in a document. Hetzerath belonged to Bekond (Bakunna), Föhren (Vurna) and Schweich (Sueche) as a branch of the mother church Mernich (Mehring) on the Moselle. The mother church of Mehring had to deliver 5 Malter oats and 1 Malter grain because of Hetzenrait, Bakunna and Vurna. Since Hetzerath was specially listed here alongside Bekond and Föhren, the place could have had its own church even then. The taxa also states that the municipality of Hetzerath has to pay 20 denarii in taxes. From the information given in the first Tridentine visitation, 1569, we learn that the patron saint of the church is St. Goar. The church had 2 altars and 2 chalices. Hetzerath was then listed as a branch of Föhren. The abbess von Niederprüm received the small and the big tithe. Abbot Gerhard von Prüm had given the Benedictine convent Niederprüm, which he founded, the Mehring church with the right of patronage in 1190. In 1602, the Bartholomäuskirche in Föhren was formally separated from Mehring and an independent parish with the branches of Bekond, Hetzerath, Erlenbach and Naurath was established. On the occasion of the visitation in 1641, all of the parish chapels were described as in need of repair. The Hetzerath branch already had a certain degree of independence at that time, as it had its own churchyard and the right to the granting of all sacraments. This was apparently partly lost again due to the chaos of war. The visitation of 1652 reported the following: "Hetzerath used to have all the sacraments, but because of the devastation caused by the soldiers, it now only has the baptismal font." In 1762 there was a clergyman of its own, Kaplan Schmitz. During this time the church patron changed from Goar to Quirinus. Quirinus was replaced as patron in the 19th century by Hubertus. Quirinus took second place. In 1804, Hetzerath was visited as a parish by the then Bishop Mannay for the first time. The official parish establishment took place in 1806.
