José Nicholas Roosevelt Théodore (born September 13, 1976 in Laval , Québec ) is a former Canadian ice hockey goalkeeper who was active between 1996 and 2013 for the Montréal Canadiens , Colorado Avalanche , Washington Capitals , Minnesota Wild and Florida Panthers in the National Hockey League . In the 2001/02 season he won the Hart Memorial Trophy as the most valuable player and the Vezina Trophy as the best goalkeeper as the third goalkeeper in league history in the same season .

Career

José Théodore was drawn in the 1994 NHL Entry Draft by the Canadiens de Montréal in the second round (position 44). For the next two years he played in the QMJHL with the Hull Olympiques . In the 1995/96 season he was used for the first time in the NHL , but only for 9 minutes. But he was used more often in the next few years, even if he played mainly for the farm team Fredericton Canadiens in the AHL . He finally made his breakthrough in the 2000/01 season when he became the first goalkeeper on his team.

He played his best season in 2001/02 . He was only the seventh goalie in NHL history and at the same time as the youngest elected most valuable player of the season and was honored with the Hart Memorial Trophy . He also got the Vezina Trophy as the best goalkeeper of the season. Another reward he got from his team: a three-year contract for 16.5 million US dollars .

Due to the failure of the 2004/05 season , Théodore signed a contract with Djurgårdens IF in the Swedish Elitserien and reached the playoff semifinals with Djurgården .

At the beginning of the 2005/06 season he signed a new three-year contract for $ 16 million with the Canadiens de Montréal. During the season, Théodore was suspected of doping when he tested positive in early February 2006. The reason for this was a hair restorer that he had been using for eight years. The use of the product itself does not increase performance, but the use of nandrolone can disguise the intake of nandrolone . Théodore received no penalty from the NHL after presenting a certificate stating that he was using the hair restorer for therapeutic purposes. For international games he was banned for two years.

In March 2006, Théodore was transferred to the Colorado Avalanche in an exchange deal . In return, Colorado's number 1, the Swiss David Aebischer , switched to the Canadiens. Due to an injury, he was only able to play five games in the last few weeks of the season, but he made it into the play-offs with his new team Colorado Avalanche .

He started the 2006/07 season as a regular goalkeeper. On October 21, 2006, he joined his former team in Montreal for the first time with Colorado. The game was a disaster for Théodore. After 25 minutes, Colorado led 4-2, but in the rest of the game he conceded six goals, five of them in the first quarter of an hour of the final third. The Canadiens ended up winning 8-5. In the course of the season he did not bring any consistent performance and was eventually replaced by 24-year-old Peter Budaj as the goalkeeper.

Between 2008 and 2010 he played for the Washington Capitals as a goalkeeper, but got no contract extension after the 2009/10 season. On October 1, 2010 he was signed by the Minnesota Wild for one year. On July 1, 2011, Théodore signed with the Florida Panthers for two years .

When he was not signed by any NHL team after the end of his contract, he received a position as an analyst at the French-Canadian sports broadcaster TVA Sports in December 2013 .
