Career

Joseph Kendall was the son of Congressman John W. Kendall (1834-1892). He attended the public schools in his home country and at times also enjoyed a private education. He then attended the State College of Kentucky and the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor . After studying law and being admitted to the bar, he began working in this profession in Prestonsburg . With the help of a special permit, he was already registered as a lawyer before reaching the minimum age.

Politically, like his father, Kendall was a member of the Democratic Party . Between 1885 and 1889, he was employed by the Washington, DC Congressional Administration as the Clerk of the House of Representatives. After the death of his father, he was elected to the US House of Representatives when he was due for the tenth seat of Kentucky, where he took up his new mandate on April 21, 1892. Since he decided not to run again for health reasons in the regular elections of 1892, he was only able to end his father's current term in Congress until March 3, 1893 .

In 1894, Kendall was re-elected to Congress in the tenth district of Kentucky. There he replaced William M. Beckner on March 4, 1895 . However, the election was challenged by his rival candidate, Republican Nathan T. Hopkins . However, this electoral appeal was only granted shortly before the end of the legislative period on February 18, 1897. That day, Kendall had to cede his mandate to Hopkins. After leaving the US House of Representatives, Joseph Kendall practiced law again. He also worked in agriculture in Clark County . Between 1884 and 1933 he was a delegate to all regional Democratic party conventions for Kentucky. He died on November 5, 1933 in his native West Liberty.
