The list of churches in Malta contains the sacred buildings of the Republic of Malta from all localities including the capital Valletta . The overview is sorted alphabetically according to the cities and / or municipalities according to the Maltese place names. The churches are given by their English names, in the same column are the Maltese names, if known. Further details including a photo of the building complete the table.

The Maltese joke: "We have a church for every day of the year". With a population of around 430,000 people (as of 2014), there is roughly one church building for every 1200 inhabitants.
In the year 60 AD, the then inhabitants of the islands were converted to Christianity . The Catholicism has become the state religion , he owns around 98 percent of the maltese, so most places of worship of the religion associated. The country's Catholic Church is divided into two dioceses : one includes the main island of Malta with 313 Catholic churches, the second is subordinate to 46 Catholic churches on the island of Gozo . In addition, Malta has a mosque , a synagogue , a Hindu temple (in Raħal Ġdid (Paola) ) and an Evangelical Lutheran church that belongs to the EKD and uses the chapel of St Andrew's Church in Valletta. The religious communities of the Scottish, Greek Orthodox and English Churches operate other houses of prayer.

A first chapel at this point was mentioned in the 15th century. In the middle of the 16th century it was given its current name after St. Mary Magdalene . According to a report by Inquisitor Petrus Dusina from 1575, the small church was only a ruin at that time. The new building took place in the 17th century, it was restored under Bishop Balaguer. The decor is simple: in the only room there is a stone altar adorned with an image of the risen Christ appearing before Mary Magdalene. A round window above the entrance lets in enough daylight when the door is closed.
The interior was extensively renovated in 2016, with the picture being outsourced. |

The rotunda is said to be the third largest domed church in the world with an inner diameter of 52 m and a height of around 60 m. During the Second World War , on April 9, 1942, a German 200 kg aerial bomb hit the dome of the church and remained on the floor of the fully occupied church without exploding. The impact point in the church floor can be visited; a replica of the bomb is in the sacristy of the church. |

Christian cemeteries and catacombs
On Malta there is the St Agatha's Catacombs near Rabat , which go back to Roman and Byzantine origins (2nd and 3rd millennium). Of the more than 60 grave tunnels, 12 are Jewish burial sites. During and after the time of the Knights Templar , the catacombs were looted. A chapel was also built a little lower down in a central hall.
