history

Prehistory and early history

St. Barbara's Church 51 ° 5 ′ 6.3 "  N , 6 ° 58 ′ 27.4"  E

The prehistory and early history of the city is still largely in the dark. A Germanic burial ground from the first century AD on the Rosendahlsberg / Neuburger Hof (Langenfeld- Reusrath Süd / city limit to Leverkusen ) suggests an early settlement, even if the associated settlement has not yet been found. Another burial ground was discovered during construction work in January 2016 on Düsseldorfer Str. / An der Landstr. in Berghausen. Here the age is estimated at 2500 years. The associated settlement is also little known, but is believed to be nearby.

Even older finds on the Rosendahlsberg (stone chips for blades made of flint ) could be dated to the Paleolithic. Today they are kept in the Museum of Prehistory and Early History in Cologne. Several stone axes from Langenfeld-Feldhausen from the younger Stone Age should also justify the assumption that the right Rhine terrace has been inhabited since the earliest history of mankind. Should be mentioned, according to the local historian of the Neanderthal , finally belonged Erkrath and Langenfeld both the Mettmann on.

The remains of a Roman consecration bell (only three more known from antiquity) and u. a. further fragments from the Rosendahlsberg could be assigned to Roman times. The discovery of a Roman Mercurius statuette in 1976 on Kirschstrasse in Richrath also caused a stir . Presumably there were trade relations and travel across the Rhine to the Roman Empire.

Recent excavations at the St. Martinus Church in Langenfeld- Richrath have shown that places with the ending -rath could have been founded as early as the end of the eighth century, almost two hundred years earlier than previously assumed. In any case, the discovery of a bone of a person buried at the church , which was dated exactly to the year 796 by the researchers using the radio-carbon method . According to recent newspaper reports, this result is confirmed by the excavations in Reusrath on the church deserted St. Barbara . Among other things, a tree coffin was found here at the Alter Markt . In addition, the first St. Barbara Church was apparently built in an earlier grave field . However, further investigations are still pending. In 2009 the find from the church desert was finally buried after a solemn mass at the "Old Market" in the St. Barbara cemetery.

The nailed skull from Langenfeld found during excavation work on April 16, 1964 at Kölner Strasse 50 could have belonged to a 20-year-old woman, according to forensic investigations. This is indicated on the one hand by the shape of the skull and on the other by the discovery of a headgear interwoven with gold thread, presumably of oriental origin (still being investigated). Nailed skulls (the most famous is the presumed one by Klaus Störtebeker ) are rare and served as a deterrent . According to the forensic scientist in archaeological services, Peter Pieper, in his lecture in February 2008 (see also Müller.) , The find can presumably be dated to the time of the witch hunts.

A horse burial on the "Götscher Weg" in Langenfeld-Richrath, which was discovered during excavation work for a canal construction project in the 1960s, according to old residents of the street, is not documented. References to their significance range from the time of the Great Migration to the death of the leader of an advance detachment in the Turkish war of 1663/1664, which Turkish history books would tell. However, there are two traditions (cited by Görgens) about the story, a legend from Berghausen about the Weißenstein and another from Rheinmülheim ( Cologne-Mülheim ) about the victory of the German emperor over an army from the east, which are related to the burial could stand. There are also investigations into the alleged early medieval castle stables in the Further Moor in connection with the legend about the sunken castle from ( Hapelrath ), also into the ground drawings in the (so-called: Leichlinger ) sand mountains.

The development to the city

The municipalities of Reusrath and Richrath , both of which belonged to the mayor's office of Richrath in the district of Solingen , had existed in today's urban area since the 19th century . The municipality of Reusrath included Hausingen and Mehlbruch , and the municipality of Richrath Berghausen , Hucklenbruch , Immigrath and Wiescheid .

Reusrath and Richrath were merged on April 1, 1910 to form the municipality of Richrath-Reusrath. From 1929 Richrath-Reusrath belonged to the Rhein-Wupper-Kreis . On November 11, 1936, Richrath-Reusrath was renamed Langenfeld (Rhld.) . The community received city rights in 1948. Langenfeld has been part of the Mettmann district since 1975.

The city was first mentioned as "Langevelt" in a document from 1396. The name "The long field" for Langenfeld reappeared in a map published in Paris in 1673 by Nicolas Sanson . Another by Johann Baptist Homann is dated around 1730. According to this, the entire rural settlement area between Itterbach in the north and Wupper in the south, between Monheim in the west and Bergisches Land in the east was evidently originally referred to as the “long field” . The term “Langenfeld” was later transferred to the city, which, despite its old settlement history, only received city rights in 1948 .

Neurath (Voigtslach, Leverkusen city limits ) is first mentioned in writing from today's town of Langenfeld in a Kaiserwerther document from the year 904, while the documented history of Richrath only dates back to 1090, that of Reusrath dates back to 1281 enough. The villages originally located in the Duchy of Berg were also classified by the Count of Jülich under the name "Parish Richrath" from around 1289. The administration of the later Richrath rule, which lasted from 1666 to 1804, was temporarily carried out by Bergische Freiheit Monheim am Rhein . The oldest preserved building is the Romanesque tower of St. Martin's Church in Richrath (built around 1150).

The development of the city of Langenfeld is largely shaped by its location on the old Via Publica , the later Cologne-Arnheimer Chaussee and today's B 8 . Many people traveled on this European trunk road and the other supra-regional connection between Hitdorf's Rheinhafen and the Bergisches Land and goods were distributed in all directions. As a logical consequence, on June 8, 1668, the Düsseldorf haulage entrepreneur Johann Maurenbrecher received an initial concession for regular "post transport" between Cologne and Düsseldorf. In 1774, the first post office of the Imperial Post Office operated by the Thurn and Taxis was set up in Berghausen am Probsthof (Alt Langenfeld), which was initially operated there until 1788. A relocation of the station to Opladen was not very lucky, so that the postman was delivered on September 25, 1793, the dismissal. From October 11, 1793, the station was therefore finally set up again in Langenfeld until the post-coach operation was discontinued, namely at today's Berliner Platz (across from the Wagner house ). For the year 1844, 24 postillons are guaranteed there, each of whom looked after four of the same color and thus a total of almost 100 horses to be changed for the stagecoaches.

This part of history is still reflected today in the head of the city's coat of arms (awarded in 1939) in the form of the post horn . Relics of this time are also the approximately 1.5 m high, square stone steles on which the travel times by post coach to the cities of Cologne , Düsseldorf and Solingen are given in hours. With the advent of the railroad , however, the importance of the stagecoach and the horse changing station in Langenfeld finally declined again. One last driving post left Langenfeld in 1905. However, given the supra-regional importance of the post office, the relocation of the “Landes-Reit- und Fahrschule Rheinland” to Langenfeld appears to be a logical consequence.

Today the past stagecoach tradition is honored by the "traditional couple of the city of Langenfeld". At festive occasions, “ Postillon and Christel von der Post ” represent the city of Langenfeld together with the mayor . The couple is often accompanied by the coachman's guard in historical postal uniforms from the German states of that time and from the imperial era. A bronze image of the traditional couple can be found in front of the main entrance of the “Stadtgalerie”.

Massacre in the Wenceslas Gorge

In the Wenzelnberg Gorge in the Langenfeld city area, 71 inmates from the Lüttringhausen prison were executed by Gestapo people on April 13, 1945 in the course of end- of- war crimes. After the war, the bodies were exhumed by 25 well-known National Socialists under the supervision of American occupation soldiers, led by a 19-year-old radio operator, and later buried in front of the town hall in Solingen-Ohligs . In 1965 the victims were reburied at the Wenzelnberg memorial , where an annual commemoration event takes place.

During the European refugee crisis in the 2010s

On October 16, 2015, Langenfeld accommodated 546 asylum seekers with an ongoing asylum procedure and an additional 91 refugees spread across two initial reception facilities (sports hall of the Konrad-Adenauer-Gymnasium and a gymnasium in the Wiescheid district ) with a combined capacity of 130 people. On October 14th, the city administration decided to prepare a further sports hall for the initial reception of refugees in addition to the existing initial reception facilities, the Wilhelm-Würz-Halle.

Economic history

House Arndt
51 ° 0 ′ 33.6 ″  N , 6 ° 56 ′ 57.5 ″  E

If you look at the finds since the Stone Age, Langenfeld was shaped by rural settlements for a long time. Proof of this is the Arndt house in the city center, a former farmhouse that is now used for gastronomy purposes.

Smaller handicraft businesses , such as the shell cutter Kotten , which was rebuilt in 2008 for the production of knife handles , added to the range of jobs. In the Kotten (house) , which is located in a freely visible exhibition hall in the Volksgarten, men from Wiescheid made wage labor wooden handles for the Solingen cutlery industry. The first larger companies such as weaving mills settled here from around 1860, the first metal processing companies from 1895. Thanks to the favorable geographical location to the cities of Cologne , Leverkusen , Solingen and Düsseldorf , in connection with the good transport connections by the federal railway line S6, the motorways 3 , 59 and 542 , the federal highways 8 and 229 as well as moderate business tax rates, the city of Langenfeld has experienced since the 1980s Years a further steady upswing. As a result, many new companies were founded in Langenfeld or the headquarters or administration moved to Langenfeld, such as Lanxess in 2005.

The Stadtmuseum Langenfeld shows selected exhibits on the city's history , others are kept by the Roman-Germanic Museum in Cologne and the Rheinisches Landesmuseum Bonn . However, related exhibits relate more to the history of those passing through, such as that of Stone Age hunters and collectors, or to things acquired through trade, lost or given as burial gifts. The Rhenish Open Air Museum in Kommern in the Eifel gives a good impression of the rural settlement history and thus the economic history over many centuries . And for the change from handicraft to industrialization - also for the local Vorbergischen area - reference is made to the Westphalian Open Air Museum in Hagen .

The city has a city coat of arms, a flag and an official seal as well as a logo. The right to use a coat of arms was granted to the city in a certificate dated July 26, 1939 by the Upper President of the Rhine Province in Koblenz .

The flag of the city of Langenfeld Rhld. Shows the colors green-white-green and the city coat of arms, described in more detail in the next paragraph, in the middle of the flag.

Blazon : Under a green shield head, inside a golden post horn with blue cord and blue tassels, in silver a two-tailed, blue-crowned, armored and tongued red lion.

Langenfeld was the old Thurn and Taxis post office “in the long field” between Düsseldorf and Cologne; the post horn reminds of it. The Bergische Löwe is a reminder of the former affiliation to the Duchy of Berg .

The seal of the city shows the coat of arms with the inscription "STADT LANGENFELD RHLD."

Debt Clock (2007)

A " debt clock" attached to the town hall of Langenfeld in 1997 with the then current debt levels of Langenfeld, the state of North Rhine-Westphalia and the federal government was dismantled at the end of 2008 and passed on to Grevenbroich . In Langenfeld it had served its purpose, so the statement of the then mayor Magnus Staehler, because since October 3, 2008 the city has been free of debt. The city was honored for this in the nationwide competition Grand Prize for Medium-Sized Enterprises of the Oskar Patzelt Foundation in 2007 with the prize “Commune of the Year”. In order to achieve this goal, taxes were increased on the one hand, and subsidies to associations were cut on the other, so that between 1997 and 2002 the debt was halved. Under the motto Golden Times , on the first weekend in October, the freedom from debt and thus the freedom of design that had been regained for the city was celebrated with a big party for the citizens. By 2013, the reserves saved through budget surpluses had again shrunk sharply due to subsequent budget deficits.

This success was made possible by a successful settlement policy as well as extensive administrative simplifications. By simplifying the approval procedures for company settlements and the development of new industrial areas near Düsseldorf-Hellerhof as well as the marketing of fallow land in the East industrial area, which has been designated in Hardt since 1953, many new companies (including the mail distribution center of Deutsche Post, Aldi , Orthomol as well as forwarding agents and Department stores ). Other new commercial spaces near the 542 in Galkhausen and 59 highways have already been partially marketed.

Other companies based in Langenfeld are:

Shopping

The central shopping street in Langenfeld is the connection between Rathaus / Konrad-Adenauer-Platz in the northern part of the city, via the market square to Berliner Platz in the south. Originally a continuously drivable street, at the end of the 1990s a section between Friedhofstraße and Marktplatz was redesigned into a pedestrian zone and, together with the Marktplatz, which was originally used as a parking lot, was closed to car traffic.

The shopping offer in Langenfeld has been enriched since October 5, 2000 by the Stadtgalerie with, among others, Thalia , textile companies such as C&A , plus medi-max , bakeries, Aldi , confectionery, gift and drugstore goods and the post office. Further shopping centers were built with the market hall on the market square (April 2000), the market arcades and the market square (7,700 m²), which opened on November 6, 2008. Tenants there include s.Oliver , Esprit , Gerry Weber , Bonita , GameStop , New Yorker , Triumph and the Müller drugstore .

Another project to renew the shopping infrastructure is the conversion or new construction of the building of the insolvent Hertie GmbH (formerly Karstadt ). After Hertie closed the property, it was converted into another shopping center, the Saß am Markt (6,200 m² of retail space). The shops there include Hennes & Mauritz , Intersport , Tom Tailor , Depot , Swiss break , Bijou Brigitte , dm-drogerie markt and Olymp & Hades .

While the shopping opportunities in the Langenfeld city center are centrally controlled by the city administration or so-called city management as the "Langenfeld ShoppingMitte", independent shopping opportunities with different characteristics have developed in the districts:

The shopping opportunities around the churches in the districts of Richrath and Reusrath have grown historically . The Richrath town center forms around Kaiserstrasse, traditionally also referred to as "the village", with two bakeries, two flower shops, two shops for dog supplies, two restaurants / pubs, a butcher, a pharmacy, an edeka supermarket, dry cleaning and boutique , Optician, travel agency, savings bank, insurance agency, bicycle shop, driving school, newspaper and lottery shop, tattoo studio and various shops dealing with the topics of health and beauty, the largest connected shopping opportunity outside the city center.

In October 2016, a newly built shopping center with a Rewe supermarket with a bakery and sushi counter, dm-drogerie markt , pharmacy, hairdresser, tanning salon and Asian restaurant opened in the Berghausen district on Hugo-Zade-Weg , in the immediate vicinity of the one that has existed there for decades Garden center "Berghausen flower pot".

There is also a shopping center in the Langfort district, u. a. with bakery, net supermarket, pharmacy and travel agency. In the vicinity of Berliner Platz, the real supermarket with its integrated shops (bakery, pharmacy, gastronomy, cleaning, shoemaker, nail salon and Ernstings shop) as well as the adjacent Hagebau hardware store and Lidl discounter is another combined local supply center.

In addition, there are numerous other shops, supermarkets and often owner-managed retail outlets in the other districts.

Culture

In the city center of Langenfeld is the town hall “Schauplatz”, in the district of Richrath the “Schaustall” (also known under its former name Kulturfabrik). Cabaret and music events take place at both venues. Schauplatz GmbH is largely responsible for the city's cultural program. The company not only organizes events by well-known artists across Germany, but also supports the local improvisational theater. The young ensemble with the leek as a trademark was founded in 2010 in the Posthornstadt and is now one of the firmly established events in Langenfeld. The imp group offers entertaining comedy for young and old. The founding members of the improvisational theater come from the ranks of the Langenfeld cultural association. The cabaret ensemble "Die Studiobühne" and the children's / youth theater "Die Blinklichter" belong to it. The studio stage serves classic cabaret with local flavor. The flashing lights are an experience for the whole family in the run-up to Christmas.

The city library / art library is located in the premises of the city hall.

There is also the Rex cinema, which is also operated by Schauplatz GmbH. Other municipal cultural institutions are the adult education center, the youth music school, the art school and the cultural forum in the Freiherr-vom-Stein-Haus (city archive, permanent exhibition on the city's history and changing art exhibitions). In Langenfeld there is also a lively free cultural scene, in which among others the art association founded in 1983 , the "artist group Falter" (IG-KLM), the theater groups Die Blinklichter, studio stage and city ensemble, the Lydton film and video club and around 30 choirs and Orchestras are active.

Art in public space has played a bigger role in Langenfeld for several years. In 2007, with the construction of the Wiescheider Kotten , the house of the last Langenfeld shell cutter Wilhelm Jakobs in a large, modern shell made of glass, as well as the installation of the so-called "swath flap" by the Langenfeld artist Franz Leinfelder in the Immigrath district on the B 229, two important works of art repositioned. For 2008 - for the city's 60th anniversary - a 16-meter-high and around 600,000 euro expensive sculpture (“Great Vertical Rhythm”) by the internationally known artist Heinz Mack was set up as a gift from two important Langenfeld companies. Other important objects are the concave mirror installation by Adolf Luther at the town hall, two sculptures by Otto Herbert Hajek in the pedestrian zone (“Stadtzeichen”) and in front of the entrance to the Kunstverein (“Wandlungen”), as well as a stainless steel relief by Horst Gläsker (“Chaos und Order ”) at the main entrance of the cultural center.

Attractions

Langenfeld has no historic town center, no city wall, no city palace and no cathedral. Nevertheless, in Langenfeld you can find medieval, modern and modern, sometimes even side by side. A first gallery shows the remains of medieval hill-towers (so-called moths) and their successors made of stone. The Dückeburg is regarded as the successor to the Blockbach Moth, the Schwanenmühle as the predecessor of the Haus Graven moated castle. Incidentally, the Schwanenmühle, Langenfeld's oldest mill, which was mentioned in a document as early as 1341, is in the immediate vicinity of the Motte Schwanenmühle and about 800 meters from Haus Graven.

Ecclesiastical monuments could form a further focus for visits, but these should be excluded here - apart from St. Barbara in Reusrath and St. Martinus in Richrath at the top of the page. Please refer to the respective district pages or the respective special pages - for example on St. Josef in the city center. However, the 11th century bell tower of St. Martinus in Richrath deserves a special mention as the oldest building in the city. The evangelical Martin Luther Church in Reusrath from 1783 as well as the often forgotten, so-called “ Anstaltskirche ” on the grounds of the Rheinische Kliniken in Galkhausen because of its - according to Müller - much praised, should also be mentioned because of its long-term supraregional importance three bells, very harmonious steel peal. Instead of sacred buildings , reference should be made to the many new secular buildings in the city, some of which are to be presented as examples. They show the economic development of Langenfeld in recent years.

The Further Moor is a 43 hectare nature reserve with heather moor and transition moor areas.
