About this picture

Lohne (Oldenburg) is a medium-sized center and the second largest city in the district of Vechta in western Lower Saxony . Lohne is one of the oldest industrial locations in the Oldenburger Münsterland . Since 1994, Lohne has been a member of the city quartet to which the cities of Damme , Diepholz , Lohne and Vechta have come together.

geography

Geographical location

Geestrücken in Ehrendorf, viewed from the Pickerweg

Lohne is located in the Oldenburger Münsterland between Oldenburg in the north and Osnabrück in the south. The Weser-Ems watershed runs through the Lohner urban area from south to north between the catchment area of the Hunte and thus the Weser in the east and the catchment area of the Hase and thus the Ems in the west . It is formed by a ridge of geography which , as the foothills of the Dammer Mountains, lies east of the closed settlement area of Lohnes. To the east of this is a moor landscape , in the west the terrain falls into the Vechtaer Mark in the north and the Quakenbrücker basin, a large lowland area, in the south of Lohnes. In the direction of Hase, Lohne is essentially drained via the Hopener Mühlenbach and the Bokerner Bach or the Aue , and in the direction of Hunte via the Dadau .

Assignment to natural areas

The largest part of the wages is assigned to the natural spatial main unit Bersenbrücker Land (585). The Geestrücken belongs to the natural area 585.03 (Dammer Berge), the northwest of Lohnes to the natural area 585.14 (Vechtaer Mark). The southwest Lohnes is part of the natural area 585.10 ( Artland ), of which the Dinklager basin forms the eastern part.

The east of Lohnes is assigned to the natural spatial main unit Diepholzer Moorniederung (584) and thus, like the Bersenbrücker Land, to the Dümmer-Geest-Niederung (58).

Protected areas and individual objects

In the Kroger part of the NSG Steinfelder Moor

In the east of the city there are two large moors, the Brägeler Moor and the Südlohner Moor, which extend to the border with the Diepholz district. The smaller northern part of the Steinfelder Moor , also on the border with the Diepholz district , which has also been under nature protection since 2007 (NSG WE 175), is located in the area of the city of Lohne. It is located south of the federal highway 214 in Kroge-Ehrendorf .

In the far west, immediately adjacent to the A 1 federal motorway , Lohne has a small share in the Burgwald Dinklage nature reserve (NSG WE 291, existing since 2017).

history

After Charlemagne built nine mission districts from 780 AD to Christianize the conquered Saxons , Abbot Gerbert Castus - the apostle of the Oldenburger Münsterland - founded the first parishes in the area from the Visbek mission cell . Lohne in Dersagau is also likely to have been founded in Visbeck.

Lohne was first mentioned in a document in 980, at that time still under the name "Laon". The outer boundaries of today's city of Lohne and thus its size (90.48 km²) were changed for the last time in 1826. At that time Kalvelage (now called Brockdorf) came from the glory of Dinklage to Lohne and thus to the Oldenburg office of Steinfeld .

Goose breeding in Brockdorf

Development into an industrial location began relatively early in Lohne. The goose breeding operations, especially in Brockdorf, have been supplying the raw material for the production of nibs since 1801, of which 50,000 were already made in Lohne in 1840. The production of paintbrushes and brushes was also made easier by the intensive animal husbandry in Lohne. In 1842 cork production started in Lohne . The plastics industry, which is dominant in Lohne today, developed from this branch .

In 1907, Lohne was divided into a 4.54 km² urban municipality and an 85.94 km² rural municipality. At the same time as this division, the center of Lohnes was elevated to the status of town. The rural community was integrated into the city of Lohne in 1933.

The population of the city of Lohne experienced a strong growth spurt after the Second World War . In 1946 alone, around 900 expellees were settled in Lohne, the majority of whom belonged to the Protestant denomination.

From 1963 to 1994, Lohne was a garrison : The 4th battery (called “Staffel” from 1988) of the anti-aircraft missile - Battalion 25 of the Bundeswehr was stationed in the Brägeler Moor; the associated barracks, officially called "Barracks at the Landwehr" since 1979, was on the mountain path. The season was relocated to Ahlhorn in 1994 and finally dissolved in 2005. The barracks in Lohne are used civilly today. In the position of Lohne from 1963 to 1979 atomic anti-aircraft missiles of the Nike type were stationed. Two versions were available on nuclear warheads . The smaller one, called B-XS, had an explosive force of 2 kilotons. The larger B-XL originally had 40 kT explosive power. The latter were exchanged for warheads of 20 kT each in the 1970s. A maximum of ten nuclear warheads were available per position, eight with the strength XS with 2 kilotons and two XL with 40/20 kilotons of explosive power.

The "Old Swede", a potential natural monument in Kroge

In March 2016 a field in Kroge a 2.50 meters wide, 3.60 meters long and 30 ton was granite gneiss - Findling recovered. The giant stone is one of the largest boulders in northwestern Lower Saxony and is therefore classified as a natural monument by the Lower Saxony State Office for Mining, Energy and Geology (LBEG). The boulder is presented at the elementary school in Kroge. On May 30, 2016 the stone was officially named " Old Swede ".

Bronze sculpture "Two Moor Workers" in the Lohner city park

In 1966 the first labor migrants from Turkey (mostly from the Amasya province ) came to Lohne. It was discontinued by peat factories. Their wives also participated in the heavy physical labor in the Lohner moors. Most of the people of Turkish origin who now live in Lohne are descended from these “pioneers” and their relatives who have traveled afterwards. To honor the migrant workers who were deployed in the moors in the east of Lohnes from 1966 onwards, the bronze sculpture "Two Moor Workers" by Bernd Maro was set up in the Lohner City Park in 2020 .

coat of arms

The coat of arms was awarded on January 3, 1912 by the Grand Duke of Oldenburg . The first and fourth fields (bars and cross) are identical to the same fields of the coat of arms of the Grand Duchy of Oldenburg at that time. The second field reflects the character of the city and shows a church as a symbol for the local church, which was donated to the Memleben monastery in 980 by Emperor Otto II and which was the main church in the area. The third field shows a wing for the city's spring industry, which was important in the 19th century. A crown symbolizes the wages and prices of civil activity.

Town twinning

Mittelwalder Stein and Madonna's Cloak by Judith von Eßen

Lohne has had a partnership with the Alsatian town of Rixheim since 1987 and with Międzylesie (Mittelwalde) in Poland since 2010 . The partnership with Rixheim essentially goes back to the fact that the Lohner company Pöppelmann founded a foreign branch in Rixheim in 1966.

A large part of the 900 displaced persons who were taken in 1946 in Lohne come from Mittelwalde (since 1945 Międzylesie) in Lower Silesia. The town twinning with Międzylesie goes back to an initiative of the councilor and painter Joseph Andreas Pausewang from Mittelwalde . Due to the high number of people who have moved to Lohne, the city has been a destination for meetings of former Mittelwalder from all over Germany every two years since the 1950s.

In the Mühlenkamp settlement, the “Mittelwalder Stone” and the bronze sculpture “Mantle Madonna” by the Silesian artist Judith von Eßen (1924-2004) from Varel were set up to commemorate the fate of the Mittelwalder people . The sculpture shows how the Virgin Mary protects the displaced under her coat. The city photo archive is located in the basement of the Lohner town hall, into which the "Mittelwalder Heimatstube" is integrated.

Economy and Infrastructure

As the “City of Special Industries”, Lohne has also made a name for itself nationwide. As early as 1900, there was an injection molding factory in Lohne, a machine factory, two brush and brush factories, a mechanical weaving factory, a sausage factory, several brick factories with a cement product industry, a peat litter factory, a cardboard box factory and a large number of other production facilities. At that time, the industry in Lohne was less characterized by its size than by its specialization. The plastics industry has been the mainstay of the Lohner economy since the 1950s. Today, companies in metal processing, machine and equipment construction, packaging and cardboard packaging, cork production as well as the food industry, agriculture and the building trade ensure a wide variety of industries in Lohne.

Weekly market on the old market

The fact that Lohne, as a middle center, is on a par with the middle center of Vechta , the district town, shows u. a. because most of the district's vocational schools are located in Lohne.

Every Thursday and Saturday there is a weekly market on the Alter Markt, and occasionally also on Rixheimer Platz.

The station is on the Delmenhorst – Hesepe line , which is operated by the NordWestBahn . Trains run every hour at Lohne station as the RB 58 to Osnabrück and Bremen. The Lohne – Dinklage small railway was operated until 1999, and passenger traffic ended here as early as 1954. In the meantime, most of the route has been converted into a cycle path . In November 2013 the “ Moobilplus Vechtadial-a- bus system , which includes Lohne, was put into operation in the Vechta district . Since then u. a. There is an hourly bus to Dinklage and the Märschendorf district of Lohner.

However, buses also run on weekends , including those from Weser-Ems-Bus , for example to Damme and Diepholz .

Plans that had existed since the 1920s to lay a canal called the Hansakanal , which was supposed to connect the Rhine-Ruhr region with the German seaports of Bremen and Hamburg , through the middle of Lohne, were finally abandoned in 1950.

The nearest international airports are Bremen Airport (80 km north) and Münster / Osnabrück Airport (80 km south). Small airfields nearby are the airfield Diepholz-Dümmerland and airport Damme .
