Lonely Stranger ( English for "lonely stranger") is a pop-rock song by British rock musician Eric Clapton . It was released on August 18, 1992 under Reprise Records and Warner / Chappell Music on the hit album Unplugged . The recording was produced by Russ Titelman in 1992.

Emergence

After Clapton's son, Conor Clapton, fell out of a skyscraper in New York City in the winter of 1991 and died, the guitarist and singer withdrew from the public eye and began the agony and pain of losing his son through music deal with. In the same year the American director Lili Fini Zanuck got in touch with Clapton and asked that the Briton compose the music to accompany her film production Rush on the subject of loss.

Clapton began the writing process in Los Angeles , California and, according to himself, found himself in a state of loneliness. In 1993, Clapton reported to Guitar World music magazine that he had "developed some strange feelings" while working in the film industry. Clapton himself wrote the title in order to feel better about himself, as he believed to have “faced something invincible”.

The title was recorded on January 16, 1992 at Bray Studios in Windsor, Berkshire as part of the unplugged sessions for the US music television station MTV (Music Television). During the recording, Clapton used a Spanish classical guitar made by Juan Alvarez in 1977. This guitar is known by the nickname " 1977 ". In 2004, the British rock musician auctioned the instrument for a total of 253,900 US dollars . All proceeds went to Clapton's alcohol and drug rehabilitation center, the Crossroads Center , in Antigua . The instrument is considered the most expensive classical guitar in the world and was also used on the instrumental piece Signe and on Tears in Heaven . Clapton only played the piece live on January 16, 1992 during a concert.

Publications

Although the song was written during the composition and recording work for the soundtrack Music from the Motion Picture Soundtrack RUSH , the song did not appear in the film or on the soundtrack release itself. Lonely Stranger was first released on August 18, 1992 under Reprise Records on the live album Unplugged . The album is part of the MTV Unplugged series and is Clapton's most successful album and the most successful live album release of all time with more than 26 million units sold (as of 2015). On September 11, 2001, the title appeared on a compilation of Unplugged and the 1999 album Clapton Chronicles: The Best of Eric Clapton under WEA Records . On October 4, 2010, the song was released as part of the so-called "The Platinum Collection" under Warner Bros. Records along with songs from the 2001 studio album Reptile and Me and Mr. Johnson , which was first released in 2004.

The American blues musician Sonny Harper released a cover version of the title on June 25, 2002 on the rock album Midnite Blues Party by Various Artists , which also featured artists such as Paul McCartney , John Lennon (posthumously), JJ Cale and Dolly Parton are represented.
