Trainer

college

In 1988 McCarthy returned to Pittsburgh after working as an assistant at Fort Hays State University , where he worked in 1989 as quarterback coach under Paul Hackett at the University of Pittsburgh . In 1992 he took over the post as coach of the wide receiver . In the offseason he kept himself afloat with part-time jobs.

Assistant coach

In 1993, McCarthy became an offensive quality control assistant with the Kansas City Chiefs before advancing to quarterback coach after two years . He trained u. a. Rich Gannon , Elvis Grbac and Steve Bono . In 1999, the later head coach of the Green Bay Packers hired for the first time in "Titletown" to also train there on the position of quarterback coach Brett Favre . That season, Favre tossed passes for 4,091 yards , the fourth-best performance of his career.

After the Packers dismissed the entire coaching staff in the wake of the 1999 season , McCarthy worked as an offensive coordinator for the New Orleans Saints . He stayed there for five years and was named "NFC Assistant Coach of the Year" by USA Today in 2000 .

In his final year before returning to Green Bay, McCarthy served as the offensive coordinator for the San Francisco 49ers . Due to many injuries and a rookie quarterback ( Alex Smith ), the team scored the fewest points and gained the smallest amount of space.

Head Coach in Green Bay

McCarthy was interviewed by General Manager Ted Thompson on January 8, 2006 and was offered the post of head coach three days later.

In his first year as head coach, the Packers finished the season with a score of 8: 8, where they won the last four games, including against the Chicago Bears . However , this was not enough for the play-offs .

In the 2007 season , McCarthy led the Packers to a 13: 3 record and made it to the NFC Championship Game , in which they lost to the eventual Super Bowl winners, the New York Giants , in extra time. He signed a five-year contract on January 19, 2008. His salary rose to $ 3,400,000 a year.

The year 2008 was marked by the discussion about the future of franchise quarterback Brett Favre. The trigger was his "resignation from resignation". At this point, McCarthy and General Manager Ted Thompson had already decided to bet on the young and unknown quarterback Aaron Rodgers . Favre was for a 4-lap Draft - Pick of the New York Jets traded.

In terms of sport, the season was the worst of the McCarthy era. Despite a solid appearance from Rodgers, who threw more than 4,000 yards and recorded a 93.8 quarterback rating , the Packers lost ten of their 16 games of the season. In the end, however, they beat the Detroit Lions , who in turn ended their season with a record of 0:16. The Packers finished third in the NFC North and missed the play-offs .

In the following season, the Packers showed some progress, but also revealed problems. So Aaron Rodgers improved his statistics over the previous season, but also had to pocket 50 sacks , league high. In addition, although the Packers won against teams with a negative record, they lost both games against the Minnesota Vikings with Brett Favre. They also lost to the then-winless Tampa Bay Buccaneers , but beat the Dallas Cowboys the following week . Then followed five wins in a row, and the Packers qualified with a win in the 16th week against the Seattle Seahawks for the 2nd time under McCarthy for the play-offs. The Packers lost the wildcard game against the Arizona Cardinals 45:51 in overtime.

In 2010 , McCarthy led the Packers to a 6-6 season and they never lost by more than four points. This was enough to slip into the play-offs behind the Bears in second place. The Packers then defeated the Philadelphia Eagles , Atlanta Falcons and the Chicago Bears, all of whom had home rights. The Packers won the Super Bowl XLV against the Pittsburgh Steelers on February 3, 2011 with 31:25 and thus won the 13th title in their club history.

For the next six years, McCarthy led the Packers to the playoffs every time, five times they also won the NFC North division . Twice they made it to the NFC Championship game, but failed at the Seattle Seahawks and the Atlanta Falcons. He never reached the Super Bowl.

In the 2017 season, the Packers missed the playoffs for the first time since 2008. The playoffs under McCarthy were also missed in the 2018 season. After only four of the first twelve games had been won, the Packers announced on December 2, 2018 that they would part ways with Mike McCarthy with immediate effect.
