The 2000/01 NHL season was the 84th season in the National Hockey League . 30 teams played 82 games each. The Stanley Cup won the Colorado Avalanche after a 4: 3 success in the final series against the New Jersey Devils . As the first team since the Montreal Canadiens in 1971, the Avalanche were able to turn a 2: 3 deficit in a final series.
As at the beginning of the 1997/98 and 1998/99 seasons , the season started in Japan . The Pittsburgh Penguins met the Nashville Predators near Tokyo . With the newly added Columbus Blue Jackets and Minnesota Wild franchises , each division consisted of five teams.

Best scorer
In addition to Jaromír Jágr , who was the best scorer with 121 points, Adam Oates also made 69 assists. Pawel Bure was again the best scorer, with 59 hits, with 384 he also fired the most shots, as in the previous season. Peter Bondra scored 22 outnumbered goals while Steve Sullivan set the record with eight outnumbered goals this season. 21% of Gary Roberts' shots hit the net. Joe Sakic and Patrik Eliáš led the plus / minus rating with +45 . Matthew Barnaby was the bad guy with a penalty of 265 minutes. 21 goals, 58 assists and 79 points from Brian Leetch were best performances for defenders.
